Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the two decades that preceded the publication of the first edition of this book, the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension had emerged as a very useful and powerful tool for investigating non-commutative algebras. At that time, the basic ideas and results were scattered throughout various journal articles. The first edition of this book provided a much-needed reliable and coherent single source of information. Since that time, the book has become the standard reference source for researchers. For this edition, the authors incorporated the original text with only minor modifications. Errors have been corrected, items have been rephrased, and more mathematical expressions have been displayed for the purpose of clarity. The newly added Chapter 12 provides broad overviews of the new developments that have surfaced in the last few years, with references to the literature for details. The bibliography has been updated and accordingly, almost double the size of the original one. The faithful revision and contemporary design of this work offers time-honored expertise with modern functionality. A keenly appealing combination. So, whether for the classroom, the well-tended mathematical books collection, or the research desk, this book holds unprecedented relevance.

These results are applied and illustrated in the context of important classes of algebras that arise in a variety of areas and have recently been intensively studied. The focus is on the interplay between combinatorics and algebraic structure. Mathematical physicists will find this work interesting for its attention to applications of the Yang-Baxter equation.

This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A polynomial identity for an algebra (or a ring) A A is a polynomial in noncommutative variables that vanishes under any evaluation in A A. An algebra satisfying a nontrivial polynomial identity is called a PI algebra, and this is the main object of study in this book, which can be used by graduate students and researchers alike. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 contains foundational material on representation theory and noncommutative algebra. In addition to setting the stage for the rest of the book, this part can be used for an introductory course in noncommutative algebra. An expert reader may use Part 1 as reference and start with the main topics in the remaining parts. Part 2 discusses the combinatorial aspects of the theory, the growth theorem, and Shirshov's bases. Here methods of representation theory of the symmetric group play a major role. Part 3 contains the main body of structure theorems for PI algebras, theorems of Kaplansky and Posner, the theory of central polynomials, M. Artin's theorem on Azumaya algebras, and the geometric part on the variety of semisimple representations, including the foundations of the theory of Cayley–Hamilton algebras. Part 4 is devoted first to the proof of the theorem of Razmyslov, Kemer, and Braun on the nilpotency of the nil radical for finitely generated PI algebras over Noetherian rings, then to the theory of Kemer and the Specht problem. Finally, the authors discuss PI exponent and codimension growth. This part uses some nontrivial analytic tools coming from probability theory. The appendix presents the counterexamples of Golod and Shafarevich to the Burnside problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume presents a selection of peer-reviewed contributions from the Second Non-Associative Algebras and Related Topics (NAART II) conference, which was held at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, from July 18–22, 2022. The conference was held in honor of mathematician Alberto Elduque, who has made significant contributions to the study of non-associative structures such as Lie, Jordan, and Leibniz algebras. The papers in this volume are organized into four parts: Lie algebras, superalgebras, and groups; Leibniz algebras; associative and Jordan algebras; and other non-associative structures. They cover a variety of topics, including classification problems, special maps (automorphisms, derivations, etc.), constructions that relate different structures, and representation theory. One of the unique features of NAART is that it is open to all topics related to non-associative algebras, including octonion algebras, composite algebras, Banach algebras, connections with geometry, applications in coding theory, combinatorial problems, and more. This diversity allows researchers from a range of fields to find the conference subjects interesting and discover connections with their own areas, even if they are not traditionally considered non-associative algebraists. Since its inception in 2011, NAART has been committed to fostering cross-disciplinary connections in the study of non-associative structures.

Book excerpt: The already broad range of applications of ring theory has been enhanced in the eighties by the increasing interest in algebraic structures of considerable complexity, the so-called class of quantum groups. One of the fundamental properties of quantum groups is that they are modelled by associative coordinate rings possessing a canonical basis, which allows for the use of algorithmic structures based on Groebner bases to study them. This book develops these methods in a self-contained way, concentrating on an in-depth study of the notion of a vast class of non-commutative rings (encompassing most quantum groups), the so-called Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt rings. We include algorithms which treat essential aspects like ideals and (bi)modules, the calculation of homological dimension and of the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, the Hilbert-Samuel polynomial, primality tests for prime ideals, etc.

Book excerpt: Over the last three decades representation theory of groups, Lie algebras and associative algebras has undergone a rapid development through the powerful tool of almost split sequences and the Auslander-Reiten quiver. Further insight into the homology of finite groups has illuminated their representation theory. The study of Hopf algebras and non-commutative geometry is another new branch of representation theory which pushes the classical theory further. All this can only be seen in connection with an understanding of the structure of special classes of rings. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to some modern developments in: Lie algebras, quantum groups, Hopf algebras and algebraic groups; non-commutative algebraic geometry; representation theory of finite groups and cohomology; the structure of special classes of rings.

It contains self-contained proofs of more than 20 fundamental results, both classical and modern. This includes Golod–Shafarevich and Olshanskii's solutions of Burnside problems, Shirshov's solution of Kurosh's problem for PI rings, Belov's solution of Specht's problem for varieties of rings, Grigorchuk's solution of Milnor's problem, Bass–Guivarc'h theorem about growth of nilpotent groups, Kleiman's solution of Hanna Neumann's problem for varieties of groups, Adian's solution of von Neumann-Day's problem, Trahtman's solution of the road coloring problem of Adler, Goodwyn and Weiss. The book emphasize several ``universal" tools, such as trees, subshifts, uniformly recurrent words, diagrams and automata. With over 350 exercises at various levels of difficulty and with hints for the more difficult problems, this book can be used as a textbook, and aims to reach a wide and diversified audience. No prerequisites beyond standard courses in linear and abstract algebra are required. The broad appeal of this textbook extends to a variety of student levels: from advanced high-schoolers to undergraduates and graduate students, including those in search of a Ph.D. thesis who will benefit from the “Further reading and open problems” sections at the end of Chapters 2 –5. The book can also be used for self-study, engaging those beyond t he classroom setting: researchers, instructors, students, virtually anyone who wishes to learn and better understand this important area of mathematics.
