Book excerpt: "The spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) is a small, cosmopolitan shark species, common in sub-tropical and sub-arctic waters. The species is often targeted commercially in most areas of the world throughout it's range, and in some cases it is overfished or the subject of conservation concern. In the Gulf of Alaska, spiny dogfish are not targeted and not generally retained, but incidental catches can be high for this schooling species. Previously, biological parameters for spiny dogfish in the Gulf of Alaska were assumed from estimates for this specie's neighboring areas, including British Columbia and Washington State. The purpose of this study was to examine spiny dogfish in the Gulf of Alaska and estimate important parameters for stock assessment in four stages: (1) general biology, distribution, and life history; (2) modeling age and growth; (3) population demographic modeling; and (4) ecological interactions revealed by diet analysis. Spiny dogfish are similar in length in the Gulf of Alaska to neighboring regions, but mature at larger sizes and have a greater fecundity than reported elsewhere. There is high natural variability in estimated ages for the species, which is reflected in the poor lit of the growth models, possibly owing to measurement error from using the dorsal fin spine as the aging structure. A two-phase growth model provided the statistical best fit. However, questions were raised about the biological interpretation of the model and whether more traditional models (e.g., von Bertalanffy and Gompertz) may be more appropriate. Using the life-history and growth data, Leslie matrix type, age- and stage based demographic models were created to estimate sustainable fishing mortality rates and to examine the risk of harvest scenarios. Female Gulf of Alaska spiny dogfish can support up to a 3% annual harvest rate; fisheries that target juveniles have the greatest risk of population decline below threshold levels. Spiny dogfish are generalist opportunistic feeders that feed on whichever prey is available, however shrimp are the most important prey type, followed by cephalopods. Results of this study will be used in future ecosystem modeling and stock assessments for this species. Waking into account the history of targeted fisheries for the species on the U.S. east coast and in British Columbia and Washington, as well as the susceptibility of the species to overfishing, fishery managers will need to take a cautious approach should a target fishery develop in the Gulf of Alaska"--Leaves iii-iv.

Book excerpt: This volume had its origin in a symposium on the Reproduction and Development of Cartilaginous Fishes that was held at the annual meetings of the American Elasmobranch Society and the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in Charleston, South Carolina in 1990. The cartilaginous fishes, class Chondrichthyes, are a large and diverse group of fishes that include approximately 900 to 1100 living species of sharks, skates, rays and ratfishes. Throughout their history, which dates back at least 400 million years, they have been a successful major component of the marine ecosystem. The chondrichthyan fishes occupy a pivotal position in comparative and evolutionary studies of vertebrate reproduction and development. They are the oldest surviving group of jawed vertebrates and they possess both the adult vertebrate Bauplan and the vertebrate program of embryonic development. The major features of the female reproductive system, including its embryonic origin, structure, physiological function, and biochemistry, apparently were established early in vertebrate evolution and are fully developed in chondrichthyan fishes. These features of the female reproductive system have been retained during the evolution of the other classes of vertebrates. Much the same can be said for the male reproductive system. Moreover, viviparity, placental nourishment of developing embryos, and the hormonal regulation of these events made an initial appearance in this group. The 22 articles presented in this volume bring together a wide variety of complementary research by investigators from seven countries, allowing us to broaden the scope and implications of our studies while identifying opportunities for future research. The appearance of a volume on the reproduction and development of cartilaginous fishes is quite opportune. The continued existence of these fishes, which survived the great extinction events of Earth's history, is now threatened by overexploitation unless immediate steps for their conservation are undertaken. Knowledge of their reproduction and development not only is an end in itself, but is of critical importance in devising successful conservation and resource management strategies.

Book excerpt: A total of 1684 dogfish were sampled to determine population characteristics from three regions in Atlantic Canada: the Minas Basin, the outer Bay of Fundy, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The posterior dorsal spine was removed from 211 male and 475 female dogfish for ageing. Ages were determined from the spines and annuli lost to wear were calculated using a spine dimension standardized equation. This study was the first attempt to define a complete reproductive stage assessment of a shark. A total of 475 females had the reproductive tracts removed and categorized as one of six stages. The Minas Basin sample exhibited the highest number of reproductively mature females (56.1%) and female dogfish captured in the outer Bay of Fundy were predominantly immature (97.6%). Maturity for 50% of female dogfish in Atlantic Canada was calculated at 17 years of age and a total length of 83.4 cm. Male dogfish age and total length were similar between the three regions but only 11 male dogfish were taken during the entire season in the Minas Basin (male:female ratio; 1:99). The Minas Basin female dogfish were significantly larger, older, and more mature than females in the other two sampling locations. Few comprehensive studies exist on spiny dogfish in the Northwest Atlantic because it is has only recently been commercially exploited. If commercial exploitation of dogfish were to begin in Atlantic Canada it would be more economically and biologically successful as a bycatch fish with other fisheries.

Book excerpt: The spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) is a commercial shark species that was recently considered, unsuccessfully, for inclusion in trade-regulation lists due to international concern about its conservation status. The major commercial demand for the species is from Europe, where the Northeast Atlantic stock has been managed unsuccessfully because of dysfunctionalities of EU fishery governance. The demand from the EU market is primarily for adult females, with the U.S. North Atlantic stock being one of the major contributors to this market. This primarily female fishery has led to overexploitation and a drastic reduction in both adult female biomass and juvenile recruitment in the U.S. Atlantic stock, forcing the adoption of a Fishery Management Plan (FMP) under the requirements of the U.S. fishery management system. The stock is now considered rebuilt and the U.S. Atlantic spiny dogfish fishery was recently certified as sustainable. However, new management strategies are needed to maintain fishery sustainability in the long-term. The first objective of this study was to analyze the EU trade dynamic changes associated with the introduction of the FMP by employing social network analysis. Results indicate that the EU market demand favoured the development of dogfish fisheries in several countries in order to supply to the decrease in U.S. export, eventually affecting the global conservation status of the species. Moreover, the species listing for trade regulation would benefit the U.S. and will enhance the conservation of other regional stocks worldwide. The second objective of this study was to investigate on the sex ratio changes in fishery-dependent surveys conducted off Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and to evaluate these results in light of the sexual segregation occurring in the species. Results support the development of a male-only directed fishery off the northeast portion of the Cape Cod peninsula, based on season (summer and early fall) and time of the day (early morning). This fishery would likely enhance the sustainability of the local spiny dogfish populations by reducing fishing pressure on the adult female component. Finally, results suggest that sexual segregation in S. acanthias off Cape Cod corresponds to female avoidance of males, coupled with specific mating and/or feeding behavior by males.
