Book excerpt: The Conference on the Science and Technology of Thin Film Superconductors was conceived in the early part of 1988 as a forum for the specialist in thin film superconductivity. The conference was held on November 14-18, 1988, in Co lorado Springs, Co lorado. Al though many excellent superconductivity conferences had been convened in the wake of the 1986-1987 discoveries in high temperature superconductivity, thin film topics were often dispersed among the sessions of a more general conference agenda. The response to the Conference on the Science and Technology of Thin Film Superconductors confirmed the need for an extended conference devoted to thin film superconductors. These proceedings are a major contribution to the technnology of thin film superconductivity because of the breadth and quality of the articles provided by leaders in the field. The proceedings are divided into articles on laser deposition, sputtering, evaporation, metal organic chemical vapor deposition, thick film, substrate studies, characterization, patterning and applications, and general properties. Most of the articles discuss scientific issues for high temperature thin film superconductors, although the conference was to be a forum for technology and scientific questions for both low and high temperature superconductivity. For the first day of the 5 day conference, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory had organized an excellent set of short courses in superconduc t ing thin film devices.

Book excerpt: The goal of this thesis is to compare the chemical and compositional profiles, grain structure and critical current densities of superconducting Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide(Y1Ba2Cu3O7-x or YBCO) layers grown by different competing techniques on a variety of substrates and buffer layers. The idea is to check if there can be variation of cationic ratios, impurities, possible diffusion of substrate/buffer layer atoms into the YBCO for different processing methods and microstructures. Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD), Metal Organic Deposition (MOD) and Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) films on Ion Beam Assisted Deposited (IBAD)-textured buffer layers and, Rolling Assisted Biaxial textured substrate (RABiTS) combinations have been compared. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) has been used in conjunction with ion beam sputtering as well as gentle chemical etching to obtain composition and chemistry information at different depths into the film. Correlation with Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) has been obtained as needed. Top view as well as cross section Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was performed for microstructure analysis. Using the gentle chemical etching method, depth profiling of composition and microstructure of the films has been achieved. It is seen that variations in microstructure occur along the depth of the superconducting layer even when the composition is uniform. The density and the micro-structural uniformity vary significantly from one deposition technique to other. The durability and stability of these films, microstructure, depth profiling have been compared and will be presented. This thesis provides important information on variations of the YBCO films from one deposition technique to another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on recently developed crystal growth techniques to grow large and high quality superconducting single crystals. The techniques applied are traveling solvent floating zone (TSFZ) with infrared image furnace, Bridgeman, solution/flux and top seeded solution growth (TSSG) methods. The materials range from cuprates, cobaltates to pnictides including La2CuO4-based (LCO), YBa2Cu3O7-d (YBCO), Bi2Sr2Can−1CunO2n+4+δ (n=1,2,3) (BSCCO) to NaxCoO2. The modified Bridgman “cold finger” method is devoted to the pnictide system with the best quality (transition width DTc~0.5 K) with highest Tc~38.5 K of Ba0.68K0.32Fe2A2. The book presents various iron-based superconductors with different structures, such as 1111, 122, 111, 11 and 42622,10-3-8. Detailed single crystal growth methods (fluxes, Bridgman, floating zone), the associated procedures and their impact to crystal size and quality are presented. The book also describes the influence of doping on the structure and the electric, magnetic, and superconducting properties of these compounds in a comparative study of different growth methods. It describes particularly under-, optimal and over-doped with oxygen cuprates (LCO, YBCO and BSCCO) and hole/electron/isovalently doped parent compounds AFe2As2 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) (122), chalcogenides AxFe2-ySe2(A = K, Rb, Cs) (122), and Fe1-dTe1-xSex (11). A review of the current growth technologies and future growth efforts handling volatile and poisonous components are also presented.

Book excerpt: This conference is the second on the Science and Technology of Thin Film Superconductors. It proved to be an excellent forum for these specialists in thin film superconductivity. The conference, held April 30-May 4, 1990, in Denver, Colorado, hosted 170 researchers from 17 countries. The response to the conference again emphasized the need for a meeting devoted to the science and technology of thin film superconductors. The breadth of artic1es and advances made in this technology since the first conference in November 1988, reflect on the maturity of the topic. These proceedings contain artic1es on deposition methods by sputtering, e1ectron beam evaporation, resistive evaporation, laser ablation, chemical vapor deposition and electrodeposition, and on other studies related to substrates, thermodynamics of formation, grain boundaries and weak links, characterization, and some practical applications. The program committee was pleased with the quality of the publications and contributed articles. This conference was highlighted by a fuU day dedicated to presentations from the federallaboratories, discussing a wide range of topics on the fabrication, characterization, and theory of high-temperature superconductor thin films. Other highlights at the conference dealt with (1) critical parameters or problems in measuring critical current density and other important parameters, and (2) problems of scale-up, reproducibility, and amenability to device fabrication. It became evident from the presentations that three issues were developing into critical issues for the ultimate practical application of high temperature superconductor thin films.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled STUDY OF EPITAXIAL THIN FILMS OF YBa Cu O ON 2 3 7-δ SILICON WITH DIFFERENT BUFFER LAYERS submitted by Fu Engang for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2005 Silicon is the most widely used semiconductor in the microelectronic industry. Highly epitaxial thin films of YBa Cu O (YBCO) grown on Si wafers are of 2 3 7-δ special interest for development of superconductor/semiconductor hybrid microelectronic devices and circuits. However, severe interaction between Si and YBCO layer, large mismatch in their lattice constant, and strain due to different thermal expansion often degrade the crystallinity and superconductivity of the grown YBCO layers. In this study, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and Eu CuO (ECO) 2 4 were introduced as double buffer layers to improve the growth and properties of the YBCO thin films grown on silicon. Preparation and characterization of epitaxial YBCO/ECO/YSZ/Si multilayer structures were studied. YBCO thin films and the double buffer layers of ECO/YSZ were deposited on the silicon (100) substrate by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. Firstly, the YSZ thin layer was grown epitaxially on silicon (100) substrate to separate YBCO from the Si substrate. Effects of substrate temperature and operating gas pressure on the structure and surface roughness of YSZ thin film were examined and the optimum deposition parameters were determined based on experimental results and comprehensive analysis. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and rocking curve revealed an epitaxial growth with a perfect c-axis orientation. The YSZ thin films grown on silicon substrate have smooth surface, providing a base on which ECO and YBCO thin film can be grown epitaxially. To further improve the quality of YBCO films, an additional layer of ECO with very stable 214-T' crystal structure was inserted between YBCO and YSZ/Si. The influence of substrate temperature and oxygen gas pressure on the properties of ECO thin films grown on YSZ/Si were experimentally analyzed and the growth conditions were optimized. Finally, the epitaxial YBCO thin films were grown on silicon substrate with double buffer layers of ECO/YSZ. The influences of substrate temperature, oxygen gas pressure and different buffer layers on the properties of YBCO thin films were studied. It was found that the crystal structure, surface roughness and superconductivity of YBCO films could be significantly improved by adding such a double buffer of ECO/YSZ. The quality of the YBCO thin films has been significantly enhanced when compared with that grown on Si with a single YSZ buffer layer and with double buffer layers of Nd CuO (NCO)/YSZ. Such highly 2 4 epitaxial thin films of YBCO grown on silicon should be of great interest for various applications including high-frequency elements, millimeter-wave receivers, and superconducting quantum interference devices. This book was released on 2007 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sm2̳-̳x̳Ce̳x̳CuO4̳-̳y̳ belongs to a class of materials known as electron-doped superconductors (Ln2̳-̳x̳Mx̳CuO4̳-̳y̳;Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu; M = Ce, Th) and has a moderately high superconducting critical temperature, Tc̳, of ~ 20 K at optimal doping (x = 0.15). The trivalent rare earth site is doped with tetravalent Ce or Th; hence the name "electron-doped". Sm2̳-̳x̳Ce̳x̳CuO4̳-̳y̳ also exhibits a unique magnetic structure at low temperatures (T 6 K) due to the antiferromagnetic ordering of the Sm3 ions. In this study, thin films of the electron-doped superconductor Sm2̳-̳x̳Ce̳x̳CuO4̳-̳y̳ (SCCO) have been grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) for a cerium concentration range of x = 0.13 to x = 0.19. The films have been characterized through x-ray diffraction, electrical transport, and thermal transport measurements. A temperature versus cerium content (T-x) phase diagram has been constructed from the electrical transport measurements and yields a superconducting region similar to that of two of the other electron-doped superconductors Nd2̳-̳x̳Ce̳x̳CuO4̳-̳y̳ and Pr2̳-̳x̳Ce̳x̳CuO4̳-̳y̳. Thermopower measurements were also performed on the samples and show a dramatic change from the underdoped region (x
