Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper on Uganda discusses that the National Development Plan (NDP), Uganda’s current Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper, was introduced in 2010/11 and originally intended to cover five fiscal years, until 2014/15. The NDP emphasises the need to accelerate economic growth to create jobs, increase average income and provide the financial resources required to expand public investment and service delivery. However, several macroeconomic and implementation challenges have reduced infrastructure investment, economic growth and job creation below the levels targeted by the plan. The key strategic objectives of the plan will be maintained over the next two years, with focus placed on strengthening public investment management, creating fiscal space for infrastructure projects and enhancing the development of practical skills among the labour force. The recalibrated macroeconomic framework outlined in Section IV will help guide fiscal policy and economic management as the next National Development Plan is being finalised. NDP II will be launched before the 2016/17 fiscal year and will guide budgetary priorities and programmes over the medium term.

Book Synopsis Financing Uganda'S Poverty Reduction Strategy by : Mwanza Nkusu
Download or read book Financing Uganda'S Poverty Reduction Strategy written by Mwanza Nkusu and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2004-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda's market-friendly development strategy and poverty reduction agenda have attracted large financial inflows, including aid. During 2000-02, concerns about a possible aid-induced Dutch disease were heightened by widening macroeconomic imbalances and an upward trend in the real effective exchange rate (REER). This paper shows that the REER remained broadly stable during a 10-year period and nontraditional exports increased remarkably, contrary to the predictions of the Dutch disease model. Also, economic growth was strong. This good performance is attributed to sound macroeconomic policies and important structural reforms, which have allowed an increased use of available production factors.

This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication analyses country studies into poverty dynamics over the past decade in eight African countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Madagascar, Mauritania, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Using improved household survey data, the book provides an overview of poverty trends and considers the impact of policy reforms to promote economic growth and poverty reduction. The report highlights the importance of the following factors in the success of poverty reduction strategies in Africa: country location, as some regions have failed to benefit from economic growth due to their remoteness; the role of infrastructure, such as a viable road network; access to education and land are key private endowments in helping households to benefit from emerging economic opportunities; and the significance of social protection measures for poverty outcomes.

Book Synopsis Understanding and Reducing Persistent Poverty in Africa by : Christopher B. Barrett
Download or read book Understanding and Reducing Persistent Poverty in Africa written by Christopher B. Barrett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior work has shown that there is a significant amount of turnover amongst the African poor as households exit and enter poverty. Some of this mobility can be attributed to regular movement back and forth in response to exogenous variability in climate, prices, health, etc. ('churning'). Other crossings of the poverty line reflect permanent shifts in long-term well-being associated with gains or losses of productive assets or permanent changes in asset productivity due, for example, to adoption of improved technologies or access to new, higher-value markets. Distinguishing true structural mobility from simple churning is important because it clarifies the factors that facilitate such important structural change. Conversely, it also helps identify the constraints that may leave other households caught in a trap of persistent, structural poverty. The papers in this book help to distinguish the types of poverty and to deepen understanding of the structural features and constraints that create poverty traps. Such an understanding allows communities, local governments and donors to take proactive, effective steps to combat persistent poverty in Africa. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Journal of Development Studies.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Poverty Reduction in Less-favoured Areas by : Ruerd Ruben
Download or read book Sustainable Poverty Reduction in Less-favoured Areas written by Ruerd Ruben and published by CABI. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Less-favored areas with limited agricultural potential or difficult access conditions, support 40 percent of the world's rural population suffering from chronic poverty. While agricultural innovations and rural development programs have begun to be implemented within developing countries, they do not address the specific obstacles faced by this large population. Instead, a targeted approach is needed to identify different resource management strategies for particular types of households and communities as well as creating balanced investments aimed at sustainable intensification of rural livelihoods. Such efforts have been the focus of the research program on Regional Food Security Policies for Natural Resource Management and Sustainable Economies (RESPONSE). Through the study of less-favored areas in Africa, Latin America, and South and East Asia, development pathways allowing for the careful adjustment of resource use strategies at the field, farm-household and village level are explored.
