The multiple functionalities of complex oxides naturally arise from the delicate energy balance between the various forms of order (structural, electronic, magnetic). In particular, multiferroic and magnetoelectric oxides which simultaneously exhibit more than one type of ferroic orders have many advantages over existing materials. Widespread practical applications will require a single-phase multiferroic material with a transition temperature that lies considerably above room temperature, large electric and magnetic polarizations, and strong coupling between ferroic orders. Recently, multiferroic LuFe2O4 has attracted great interest because it has relatively high transition temperatures, large polarization, high magnetic coercivity, and the strong magnetoelectric coupling. Compared to the large amount of effort to study bulk LuFe2O4, there are only a couple of reported attempts to grow LuFe2O4 thin films, presumably due to difficulties in the sample preparation. In this thesis, a comprehensive growth diagram of Lu-Fe-O compounds on MgO (111) substrates using pulsed laser deposition is constructed based on extensive growth experiments. The LuFe2O4 phase can only be grown in a small range of temperature and O2 pressure conditions. An understanding of the growth mechanism of Lu-Fe-O compound films is offered in terms of the thermochemistry at the surface. Superparamagnetism is observed in the LuFe2O4 film and is explained in terms of the effect of the impurity hexagonal LuFeO3 (h-LuFeO3) phase and structural defects. In addition to LuFe2O4, we also succeeded in growing hexagonal-LuFeO3 (h-LuFeO3) epitaxial films in single crystalline form on either insulating or metallic substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). H-LuFeO3 thin films exhibit hysteresis in piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) measurements indicative of ferroelectricity, and simultaneously show antiferromagnetic order, with both properties coexisting at room temperature.

Book excerpt: The preparation and characterization of thin film oxides and chalcogenides by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is presented. An overview of fundamental PLD concepts are presented and are followed by a description implementation and development of the PLD systems at OSU. We present the results of thin film growth of high electron mobility In2O3:W in which we have prepared films exhibiting □ > 100 cm2/Vs on vitreous SiO2 substrates. The growth of Cu3TaQ 4 (Q = S, Se) films is outlined as a two step process consisting of PLD of ceramic targets followed by ex-situ annealing in chalcogenide vapor. Also, BiCuOSe thin films have been prepared in-situ and exhibit a high hole mobility up to 4 cm2/Vs. A discussion of their electronic structure is presented which explains the nature of the low band gap energy on the basis of deep Bi 6p level at the conduction band minimum. Finally, the results of BaBiO3 thin film preparation are presented in which both polycrystalline and highly (00l) oriented samples were grown.

Book excerpt: Despite its limitation in terms of surface covered area, the PLD technique still gathers interest among researchers by offering endless possibilities for tuning thin film composition and enhancing their properties of interest due to: (i) the easiness of a stoichiometric transfer even for very complex target materials, (ii) high adherence of the deposited structures to the substrate, (iii) controlled degree of phase, crystallinity, and thickness of deposited coatings, (iv) versatility of the experimental set-up which allows for simultaneous ablation of multiple targets resulting in combinatorial maps or consecutive ablation of multiple targets producing multi-layered structures, and (v) adjustment of the number of laser pulses, resulting in either a spread of nanoparticles, islands of materials or a complete covering of a surface. Moreover, a variation of PLD, known as Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation, allows for deposition of organic materials, ranging from polymers to proteins and even living cells, otherwise difficult to transfer unaltered in the form of thin films by other techniques. Furthermore, the use of laser light as transfer agent ensures purity of films and pulse-to-pulse deposition allows for an unprecedented control of film thickness at the nm level. This Special Issue is a collection of state-of-the art research papers and reviews in which the topics of interest are devoted to thin film synthesis by PLD and MAPLE, for numerous research and industry field applications, such as bio-active coatings for medical implants and hard, protective coatings for cutting and drilling tools withstanding high friction and elevated temperatures, sensors, solar cells, lithography, magnetic devices, energy-storage and conversion devices, controlled drug delivery and in situ microstructuring for boosting of surface properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin film thermoelectric coolers offer several advantages that include reliability and integration with device processing. Successful thin film thermoelectric cooling requires integration with thin film diamond or aluminum nitride heat spreaders and the device wafers. Numerous deposition techniques have been attempted previously including evaporation, flash evaporation, molecular beam epitaxy, chemical vapor deposition, and sputtering. In the case of thermoelectric thin films, a primary difficulty is maintaining stoichiometry. In the present effort, thin films of p-type Bi[subscript 0.5]Sb[subscript 1.5]Te3, n-type Bi2Te[subscript 2.7]Se[subscript 0.3] and n-type (Bi2]Te3)90(Sb2Te3)5(Sb2Se3)5 (with 0.13 wt.% SbI3) were deposited on mica and aluminum nitride substrates using Nd-YAG pulsed laser deposition. The film quality in terms of composition and crystal perfection was studied as a function of growth temperature. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for crystalline quality, and by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for surface morphology. The films showed uniform thickness and high crystalline quality with a preferred (0 0 n) alignment with the substrates. The Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity and Hall mobility were measured and compared with the bulk properties. An improvement in the thermoelectric properties by reduction in laser induced particulates has been demonstrated by the use of lower incident laser energy. The thermoelectric characteristics of the films deposited on AlND Si substrates were found to be superior to those deposited on mica substrates. X-ray mapping and energy-dispersive-spectroscopy were performed to determine the composition and homogeneity of the thin films. The results showed that pulsed laser deposition has the ability to produce congruent transfer of the target composition to the thin.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique, with its vast tunability in terms of thin film fabrication has been the center of this study. By changing the temporal component of the laser source used for deposition into the femtosecond (fs) regime, interesting structural, morphological changes can be achieved which may prove to be beneficial for photocatalytic applications. In particular, molybdenum oxide thin films, which are the less well-studied and potentially newer candidates for photocatalysis applications have been chosen for investigation. Hence, a detailed characterization study of molybdenum oxide thin films synthesized using femtosecond-based (f-PLD) and nanosecond-based (n-PLD) techniques, was carried out in terms of their structural, morphological, surface chemical/ electronic states and vibrational properties using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The f-PLD technique was found to produce more favorable molybdenum oxide thin films deposited on glass for surface-related applications, in terms of having a higher surface to volume ratio, than the n-PLD technique. A related simultaneous study of substrate-based effect on the thin films produced using n-PLD system, also revealed both variation among the morphological, structural, and electronic (in terms of Mo oxidation state) properties depending upon the nature of the substrate used to synthesize the molybdenum oxide thin films. Special cases of thin films on epitaxial substrates (Si, sapphire) have been characterized to determine the parameters necessary for fabricating highly-textured thin films with large surface-area to volume ratio, which is key to efficient photo-catalysts.
