Book excerpt: These poems are inspired by the natural beauty and wildlife of three areas where the author has grown up and lived in retirement: rural Massachusetts, the coast of Maine, "wild and wonderful" West Virginia, and the South Island of New Zealand. He refers to these spots as the antipodes two places on opposite sides of the earth. Although they are ten thousand miles apart and in different hemispheres, he finds similarities, as noted in the final section, particularly between places in New England and New Zealand. He also points out that by living this antipodean lifestyle one avoids winter and enjoys eternal summer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will take you up the hills and hollers and down the rivers of West Virginia. It is a collection of stories written by one of West Virginia's finest outdoorsmen. I have been asked many times by everyone from our governors to our visitors, "What does wild and wonderful West Virginia mean?" From now on, I think I will just hand them this book to explain. Dave Arnold - River Outfitter since1977 and Tourism Commissioner - State of West Virginia since 1989. On these pages Chris Ellis does more than offer a collection of hunting and fishing stories; he presents a study of how a particular place's woods and waters can shape a person. If the Mountain State is your home, you'll feel its influence on your soul even more deeply after reading these accounts. If it's not, you may consider moving-or at least making an extended visit. Adam Heggenstaller, Editorial Director, Game & Fish Whether weaving tales about his recent adventures in the hills of West Virginia, or recounting stories of his youth, Ellis has a way of sharing his passion for the outdoors that will leave you with a smile on your face and a yearning to hit the woods to create your own memories. Pete Muller - National Wild Turkey Federation I've known Chris Ellis for nearly a quarter-century, dating back to when he was a rangy young man living not too far from Beckley, West Virginia and the New River Gorge. He was raised on the banks of the Elk River. While his work in outdoor communications and promotions over the years has taken him all over North America, he stays true to his West Virginia home and roots. Ellis is an accomplished trout angler, a skilled river raft driver, an enthusiastic squirrel, turkey and deer hunter. In fact, he was one of the wonderful West Virginia crew in 2004 who helped when we put together a deer hunt for the first wounded warrior ever to take such an adventure directly out of Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He has run his own outdoor destinations and guiding business, working with the West Virginia tourism office on outdoor destination marketing, worked public relations and marketing from some well-known outdoor brands and is now the marketing chief for Timney Triggers. During much of that time he has also written regular articles for the Herald Dispatch in Huntington and the Register-Herald in Beckley. Last fall, Ellis told me he was compiling a book of some of his favorite stories and memories of growing up and living in the Mountain State. It's out and titled, "Hunting, Fishing and Family - From the Hills of West Virginia." All of the articles were originally published in the two newspapers cited above. If you read this book, you'll learn a lot about Chris Ellis; his home, his passions, his values. It isn't a single, long-spun narrative but a collection of short stories - vignettes really - that are rarely more than a couple pages long. Each conveys a memory, emotion or philosophy related to an outdoors experience, often connected to sharing that experience with a loved one. The book is full of testimonials to his parents, kids, dogs and, especially, his grandfather. I loved the story where he explained what separated his grandfather from the typical weekend angler. Similar tales reveal his boyhood wonder at watching the old man operate. Ellis explains how he wants to pass along the oral history and lessons to his own children and grandchildren. Ellis said he hopes people find it a nice collection of what it meant to grow up and live in his special part of America. The book is a fast 123 pages, in a compact 5.5x8.5-inch size with no photos or illustrations. If you hunt from a turkey or deer blind or treestand, it's an easy one to slip into a pack. Read a story or two, then scan the woods or field. Repeat process...

This locale provided a carefree playground for the youthful adventures of Alice Lorraine Faith. This book recounts a journey back in time when life was uncomplicated and lighthearted. The narrative describes the modest lifestyle and humble home of her unpretentious youth. With her brothers and favorite cousin, Alice shared an active childhood and filled days of every season with self-generated amusement and exploration. She engages readers in a personal exploration of self-actualization and fulfillment. She discovers new insights about the people and events around her, and she develops a deeper understanding and appreciation of her parents. The story is a cathartic process as she recounts joyful times and confronts poignant relationships during a formative period of life. These family experiences, especially relationships with her emotionally distant father, have a profound impact on shaping the woman that she becomes in adulthood. Alice was motivated to give back to her community and to leave an enduring personal legacy.

Book excerpt: An impressive contribution to the annals of 20th Century American Political History, West Virginia Tough Boys: Vote Buying, Fist Fighting, And A President Named JFK by journalist F. Keith Davis is an amazing collection of reminiscences of West Virginia political kingpins and civic leaders during the heady 1960s. Tales of vote-buying, free liquor, fistfights over campaign strategies, and double-take inducing tales directly from the men and women who thrived in JFK's time, West Virginia Tough Boys is so candid it's hard to put down. -- Midwest Book Review

Cult Pop Culture: How the Fringe Became Mainstream is the first collection dedicated to the quirky, offbeat aspects of American popular culture that people have loved, enjoyed, (and in some cases) worshiped over the last 50 years. By examining the people and subjects we hold most dear, this three-volume set offers deep insights into what Americans think, feel, and cherish. Organized by subject, the collection enables readers to focus on a given topic or compare different subjects across cult phenomenon. Volume One of the set covers film and television topics, Volume Two examines music and literature, and Volume Three explores sports, clubs, and the cult industry. Through this investigation of sublime, transcendent, and idiosyncratic trends, readers will learn more about iconic individuals, topics, and subjects that form the vast underbelly of American culture. By revealing how tightly interwoven cult topics are with the public's broader notion of popular culture, the collection underscores the blurry line between normal and abnormal, grandiose and degradation.

Book excerpt: Carrie Highley was always a tomboy—and by the time she turned sixteen, she was wishing she were dancing with the girls instead of the boys at cotillion dances. In her early thirties, while living in West Virginia, she discovered a passion for road biking, finally stopped sequestering her deep feelings for women, and began an ill-fated love affair with a female cycling friend. Then, at thirty-six, she found herself skidding into Asheville, North Carolina, holding on tight to the coattails of her doctor husband and spending her time as a stay-at-home mother of two boys. Moving to North Carolina was Highley’s attempt to reembrace heterosexual married life after her tumultuous time in West Virginia. But in Asheville, she met Charlie, a fellow cyclist twenty-three years her senior, who became her mentor, friend, and father all rolled into one—and as they grew closer, she started unloading her fears into Charlie’s inbox. With Charlie’s support, Highley finally got the courage to do what she’d been waiting her whole life to do: go down the mountain with her hands off the brakes.

Javari knew that West Virginia would be different from his home in Bushwick, Brooklyn. But his first day at STEM Camp in a little Appalachian town is still a shock. Though run-ins with the police are just the same here. Not good. Javari will learn a lot about science, tech, engineering, and math at camp. And also about rich people, racism, and hidden agendas. But it’s Cricket, a local boy, budding activist, and occasional thief, who will show him a different side of the holler—and blow his mind wide open. Javari is about to have that summer. Where everything gets messy and complicated and confusing . . . and you wouldn’t want it any other way. J + C + summer = ∞
