Book Synopsis Stories from a Small Town by : Roger Engle
Download or read book Stories from a Small Town written by Roger Engle and published by Self Publisher. This book was released on 2012 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a moment and picture your childhood home. Try to visualize a short walk from your doorstep. Can you conjure up your neighborhood, nearby houses or businesses, and the people who lived or worked in them? Can you recall the events that unfolded nearby, or the activities that once filled your childhood world? Roger Engle took this mental journey throughout his hometown, and in doing so, rediscovered his childhood around every corner. Stories from a Small Town places us in Hedgesville, West Virginia, between the years of 1948 and 1964, and encourages us to meander there at a pace governed by the whimsy of a child. Mr. Engle takes us along on his adventures around town and into the surrounding wilderness, and provides an unfettered and rather amusing view into the life domestic. With tenderness and grit, he reveals both the challenges and opportunities of growing up in a working-class family during self-sufficient times. Stories from a Small Town offers us a delightfully vivid portrait of childhood, and may very well inspire us to remember, document, and share with future generations the stories of our own lives--while we are still able.

Book excerpt: Growing up in southern West Virginia in the 1950's and 60's was difficult at times, but still a fabulous time for making lifelong friends and memories. Today, downtown Princeton is being revitalized, but has had previous decline with stores closed and jobs lost. There is evidence of drug use with many crimes attributed to those seeking money for drugs. There is much heartache with many families having children or friends with an addiction. God is the answer to those suffering with the pain of addiction and for the loved ones dealing with the ongoing stress and drama of a drug abuser in their life. Prayer and Bible study are the means to healing and peace! Psalm 91:1-2 NIV Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.""

Book Synopsis With Malice toward Some by : William A. Blair
Download or read book With Malice toward Some written by William A. Blair and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few issues created greater consensus among Civil War-era northerners than the belief that the secessionists had committed treason. But as William A. Blair shows in this engaging history, the way politicians, soldiers, and civilians dealt with disloyalty varied widely. Citizens often moved more swiftly than federal agents in punishing traitors in their midst, forcing the government to rethink legal practices and definitions. In reconciling the northern contempt for treachery with a demonstrable record of judicial leniency toward the South, Blair illuminates the other ways that northerners punished perceived traitors, including confiscating slaves, arresting newspaper editors for expressions of free speech, and limiting voting. Ultimately, punishment for treason extended well beyond wartime and into the framework of Reconstruction policies, including the construction of the Fourteenth Amendment. Establishing how treason was defined not just by the Lincoln administration, Congress, and the courts but also by the general public, Blair reveals the surprising implications for North and South alike.
