Book Synopsis Growing Balsam Fir Christmas Trees in Field and Forest by : G. F. Estabrooks
Download or read book Growing Balsam Fir Christmas Trees in Field and Forest written by G. F. Estabrooks and published by Fredericton : Canadian Forestry Service, Maritimes. This book was released on 1988 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High quality balsam fir Christmas trees produced in natural forest sites and in field planations are the result of several years of nurtuing. This report discusses stand dvelopment, site preparation, planting, tending, and cutluring procedures. Trees in natural stands must have adequate space, available nutrients, and protection for growth and development. Thinning (spacing) is necessary throughout the rotation on natural sites with abundant stocking; where stocking is sparse, fill planting supplements natural regeneration. Fertilizers increase foliage production thus enhancing tree quality and shortening rotations. Control of insects, diseases, and competition from other vegetation, which often threaten the viability of a Christmas tree operation, require vigilance and the correct use of pesticides and good cultural practices. Establishment of a field plantation requires site preparation, suitable stock, and proper planting. Seedlings for outplanting may be nursery grown bareroot or container stock, or wilding transplants. Mowing and the judicious use of herbicides throughout the rotation protect the plantation trees from competition. Fertilizer may be of little importance during the first two years after outplanting, but when established, balsam fir usually responds to additions of fertilizer, especially nitrogen. A shearing-pruning program should begin at outplanting to correct defects, such as double tops. When the crown is about 1.3-1.8 m (4-6 ft) in height, overall shearing to promote foliage build-up and tree symmetry should commence. Trees should then be sheared each year till harvested.

Book Synopsis Non-wood Forest Products from Conifers by : William M. Ciesla
Download or read book Non-wood Forest Products from Conifers written by William M. Ciesla and published by Fao. This book was released on 1998 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this paper is to provide a global review of the non-wood uses of conifers. For the purposes of this paper, conifers are defined as trees and shrubs of the botanical orders Coniferales, Taxales and Ginkgoales (Rushforth 1987). Although some services are briefly mentioned, the focus of this paper is on products which conifers provide species, which are important sources of non-wood forest products, and places where these products are harvested. With the exception of essential oils, which can be obtained from several parts of the tree, the products described are organized by the part of the tree from which they are obtained (e.g. foliage, bark and roots, resin, seeds and cones). Where possible, data on levels of production and international trade are presented. Problems associated with the sustainable management of these products and compatibility or conflicts with other land uses are also presented. Both contemporary and historical or traditional uses of non-wood products from conifers are discussed.

Book Synopsis Non-wood Forest Products from Temperate Broad-leaved Trees by : William M. Ciesla
Download or read book Non-wood Forest Products from Temperate Broad-leaved Trees written by William M. Ciesla and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperate broadleaved trees grow in very different ecosystems in the northern and southern hemispheres, but are also found extensively in many tropical and subtropical mountain areas. A wide range of non-wood products are derived from temperate broadleaved trees, and their description is organized in this volume according to the part of the tree from which they are obtained (whole tree, foliage, flowers, etc.). This information is presented in order to raise awareness on, and assist in identifying, opportunities for the management and production of non-wood products from temperate broadleaved trees. The intended audience of this publication ranges from interest groups in the forest, agriculture and rural development sectors to conservation agencies in developed and developing countries.
Download or read book Crown-condition Classification written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program of the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, conducts a national inventory of forests across the United States. A systematic subset of permanent inventory plots in 38 States is currently sampled every year for numerous forest health indicators. One of these indicators, crown-condition classification, is designed to estimate tree crown dimensions and assess the impact of crown stressors. The indicator features eight tree-level field measurements in addition to variables traditionally measured in conjunction with FIA inventories: vigor class, uncompacted live crown ratio, crown light exposure, crown position, crown density, crown dieback, foliage transparency, and crown diameter. Indicators of crown health derived from the crown data are intended for analyses at the State, regional, and national levels, and contribute to the core tabular output in standard FIA reports. Crown-condition measurements were originally implemented as part of the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) Program in 1990. Except for crown diameter, these measurements were continued when the FIA Program assumed responsibility for FHM plot-based detection monitoring in 2000. This report describes in detail the data collection and analytical techniques recommended for crown-condition classification.
