Book excerpt: A crash course in marketing for eye care professionals, Grow Your Eye Care Practice: High Impact Pearls from the Marketing Experts guides readers through this crucial area of business development. With an increase in patients undergoing elective procedures and an increase in the amount of providers, marketing has become the most important way for eye care professionals to grow their practices and differentiate themselves from their competition. Since marketing is not addressed in any formal course in medical school, optometry school, residency or fellowship, many eye care professionals lack basic understanding and skills in this area of growing importance to their businesses. To meet this critical need, editor Dr. Ming Wang and associate editors Shareef Mahdavi, Michael Malley and Dr. Tracy Swartz have created this essential, timely handbook aggregating the key ophthalmic marketing pearls, teachings and experiences of some of the leading national and international marketing experts. Grow Your Eye Care Practice begins with an overview of the history and current state of ophthalmic marketing, including a fascinating look at the commoditization of eye care as was demonstrated with the introduction of LASIK. The core chapters address foundational and innovative marketing concepts and their application to eye care, including: Market research, segmentation, targeting and positioning Patient experience Branding versus call to action Word of mouth referrals Digital marketing, including social media, websites and SEO Innovative marketing approaches Ethics and laws governing medical marketing Upcoming disruptive marketing technologies Grow Your Eye Care Practice: High Impact Pearls from the Marketing Experts is an indispensable desktop reference for all eye care professionals--ophthalmologists, optometrists, administrators, practice managers, business associates, residents, fellows, medical students and optometry students—who wish to improve their marketing skills, grow their practices and differentiate themselves from their competition.

You can develop a successful practice while providing a much needed service by bucking this trend. Jeffrey Sedgewick, O.D., M.D. spent 4 years as a practicing Optometrist prior to entering medical school. While practicing as an Optometrist and as an Ophthalmologist, he has seen many examples of poor medical care by Optometrists, himself included. He is convinced that it doesn't have to be this way. He believes Optometrists who start their own Medical Optometry Practice can fill an increasingly important function, but they need more knowledge and clinical experience, which he seeks to provide in this textbook, in his web site www.theodmdconsultinggroup.com, in future courses and as a consultant to your Medical Optometry Practice.

Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Book excerpt: While the business aspect of an optometrist's practice may come second to patient care, optometrists today are faced with greater competition for new patients and income. This updated guide shows readers how to work smarter through effective practice management to offset reduced earnings due to fixed reimbursements of managed care and competition from 1-800 contact lens companies and chains selling discount frames and lenses. Drawing on over 40 years of experience, the author presents practical strategies for addressing the problems of day-to-day practice, and explains how to develop business and marketing plans without detracting from the optometrist's professional image. This edition features an increased focus on how to work with partners (including how to exit gracefully from a partnership), how to start a part-time practice, and how to be creative in practice. Authored by an expert in the field of practice management and optometry for the most effective, realistic advice and guidance. Concise, readable text synthesizes the author's 40-plus years of expertise in optometric practice. Necessary business and marketing skills are presented in a way that is compatible the optometrist's professional image. Tips and tools are provided on how to approach the client as both a consumer and a patient. Helpful information for students or optometrists who own or are planning to own their own practice. Completely re-written and updated. 4 new chapters cover topics such as practice locations, part-time practicing, managed care, management of un-met vision needs, and the office of the future. Medical training is a difficult journey with enormous amounts of information to absorb over a short time period. Chapter topics include: Marketing Leadership Negotiations Operations Finance Ophthalmologists, optometrists, and eye care staff will appreciate Essential Business Fundamentals for the Successful Eye Care Practice for its efficient and relevant information to running an eye care practice, whether they are currently in training and want to set themselves up for success or they are already practicing and want to fill in a deficiency in their knowledge.
