Topics in the second part include group therapy with special patient populations, group therapy in special settings, special types of group therapy and research and outcome studies in group therapy. The third part covers group therapy with children. All the articles can be used to develop specialized and specific literature seminars or to elucidate issues that arise in the clinical supervision of group psychotherapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1977, the current editors contributed a review article on behavioral group therapy to a volume of Hersen, Miller, and Eisler's Progress in Behavior Modi fication series (1977). At that time we noted that, despite the advantages to both clinicians and clients of conducting behavioral treatments in groups, clinical developments and research in this area were still at a relatively rudimen tary level. The majority of studies in the behavioral group therapy literature we reviewed reported the direct transfer of an individual behavior therapy pro cedure, such as systematic desensitization, to a group of clients with homoge neous problems, such as snake phobia or test anxiety. Groups were used in many studies merely to generate sufficient numbers of subjects to allow various types of interventions to be compared, rather than to examine group process variables per se. Only a limited amount of attention had been given to whether these group interaction variables (such as group discussion, sharing ideas and feelings, and mutual feedback and reinforcement) might enhance individually oriented procedures applied in a group. The 8 years since this original chapter was written have seen a significant growth in both the breadth and depth of clinical research and work in the behavioral group therapy field. This growth was documented in part in a three volume series on behavioral group therapy by the current editors (Upper & Ross, 1979, 1980, 1981).

It comprises the negative, disruptive elements, which threaten to undermine and even destroy the group, but when contained, have the potential to mobilise the group's creative processes. Understanding the 'anti-group' gives therapists new perspectives on the nature of relationships and alternative strategies for managing destructive behaviour.

Book excerpt: Interactive Group Therapy is a complete guide to group psychotherapy based on the author's unique integrated approach. Dr. Earley integrates from interpersonal group therapy a focus on the feeling reactions and relationships among group members, from psychodynamic approaches, an appreciation of unconscious processes and childhood origins, and from Gestalt therapy, the importance of awareness, contact, and experimentation. The book develops an action-oriented leadership style for group-centered groups and a new interpersonal understanding of the therapeutic change process in group therapy, leading to an approach that has impressive depth and creativity. It covers both short-term and long-term groups, making it a valuable book for those interested in brief therapies. The primary focus of Interactive Group Therapy is to provide practical guidelines for leading groups. It offers detailed suggestions for structuring groups, creating a therapeutic group climate, promoting interpersonal work, and helping group members develop awareness and responsibility. It discusses how to handle conflict, foster therapeutic change, work with difficult clients, adopt the best leadership attitude, understand group process, and a host of other clinical issues. In addition to rich clinical examples and case histories, this book also presents transcripts of group sessions, annotated to illustrate both theory and technique. The author's thorough presentation of his approach, its theoretical underpinnings, and its application to actual groups make this a valuable resource for graduate students in the mental health professions and psychotherapists of all levels of experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last, a book on therapy which is easy to read and jargon-free, yet manages to convey the richness of the group experience.' - Penelope Campling, British Journal of Psychiatry 'It is vitalising reading - and should be on the shelves of any psychotherapy department and of any therapist with an interest in groups.' - Chris Evans, British Journal of Medical Psychology 'The purpose of this short, highly readable and extremely informative book is "to provide the reader with a practical insight into the group-analytic method of group therapy". The book achieves this goal through a format that is interactive with the reader.' - Jerome S. Gans, International Journal of Group Psychotherapy A Workbook of Group-Analytic Interventions is designed to complement the academic and experiential training of therapists. Written by experienced practitioners, it gives trainees a practical insight into the ways in which group analysts may tackle difficult situations, allowing them to understand more fully the nature of intervention right from the beginning of their training. Eight situations drawn from real psychotherapy groups are presented in detail so that readers may exercise their own skills in taking decisions and judging appropriate interventions. Each situation is then analysed in depth by one of the authors, who describe and comment on the thinking behind the interventions suggested by a panel of group analysts. The book gives the trainee a wide and informed appreciation of different situations arising in groups and appropriate ways of handling them. It provides an excellent base from which to start to practise.

It is done when two people interact in a prolonged series of emotionally charged encounters, with the purpose of changing the behavior of the dyad. The motives and dynamics of individual psychotherapy are explained in detail as well as the history of the approach. The book discussed the concept of child psychoanalysis. This section includes its historical background, the similarities and differences between child and adult psychoanalysis, the age of the child that should be treated and frequency of treatment. The text also covers some techniques in the application of psychoanalysis. A broad section of the volume is focused on the modification of the child's behavior as a type of treatment. This chapter is followed by a section on the behavioral approaches in adolescent psychiatry. The book will provide useful information to psychologist, psychiatrist, behavioral specialist, students and researchers in the field of psychology.
