Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a review of the conjunctive water use of surface water and groundwater within the Rechna Doab. The Rechna Doab is located in the Punjab province and has an area of 2.98 million hectares (Figure 1). The cultivated area in the Rechna Doab is regarded as the granary of the Punjab province and comprises eight districts, namely, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Narowal and Hafizabad. The area consists of two distinct agroclimatic zones, i.e. the Punjab Rice-Wheat (PRW) zone and the Punjab Sugarcane-Wheat (PSW) zone (WAPDA, 1979). Irrigated agriculture started in the Rechna Doab in 1892 via Lower Chenab Canal. The irrigation system in the Rechna Doab consists of 504 km of branch canals, 240 km of main canals and 373 km of link canals, and about 0.2 million tubewells are installed in the freshwater areas. This report is prepared to provide an overview of land and water resources available in the Rechna Doab and the institutional issues that need to be addressed for effective conjunctive water management in the Rechna Doab.

Book Synopsis Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks by : B.B.S. Singhal †
Download or read book Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks written by B.B.S. Singhal † and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrology is a topical and growing subject, as the earth's water resources become scarcer and more vulnerable. Although more than half the surface area of continents is covered with hard fractured rocks, there has until now been no single book available dealing specifically with fractured rock hydrogeology. This book deals comprehensively with the fundamental principles for understanding these rocks, as well as with exploration techniques and assessment. It also provides in-depth discussion of structural mapping, remote sensing, geophysical exploration, GIS, field hydraulic testing, groundwater quality and contamination, geothermal reservoirs, and resources assessment and management. Hydrogeological aspects of various lithology groups, including crystalline rocks, volcanic rocks, carbonate rocks and clastic formations, are dealt with separately, using and discussing examples from all over the world. Applied Hydrogeology of Fractured Rocks will be an invaluable reference source for postgraduate students, researchers, exploration scientists, and engineers engaged in the field of groundwater development in fractured rock areas.

Book Synopsis Groundwater Development and Management by : Pradip K. Sikdar
Download or read book Groundwater Development and Management written by Pradip K. Sikdar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the challenges for efficient groundwater management, with a focus on South Asia and India, providing a balanced presentation of theory and field practice using a multidisciplinary approach. Groundwater of South Asia is increasingly confronted with overuse and deteriorating quality and therefore requires urgent attention. Management of the stressed groundwater systems is an extremely complex proposition because of the intricate hydrogeological set-up of the region. Strategies for sustainable management must involve a combination of supply-side and demand-side measures depending on the regional setting and socio-economic situations. As a consequence, the challenges of efficient groundwater management require not only a clear understanding of the aquifer configuration, but also demand for the development of a comprehensive database of the groundwater occurrences and flow systems in each hydrogeological setting. In addition, drilling and well construction methods that are appropriate to different hydrogeological formations need to be implemented as well as real-time monitoring of the status of the groundwater use. Also corrective measures for groundwater that is threatened with depletion and quality deterioration need to be installed. Finally, the legal framework of groundwater needs to be rearticulated according to the common property aspect of groundwater. These challenges should revolve around effective groundwater governance by creating an atmosphere to support and empower community-based systems of decision-making and revisit the existing legal framework and groundwater management institutions by fostering community initiatives. This book is relevant for academics, professionals, administrators, policy makers, and economists concerned with various aspects of groundwater science and management.

The book highlights the concrete situation in Pakistan – including the severity of the problem, its health effects and the risks posed to the people living in affected areas by these two major pollutants– and points out essential research areas that call for immediate attention. As such, it draws attention to the need for management strategies in the affected areas and offers a valuable reference work on Pakistan for students and researchers alike.
Book Synopsis Water Management, Purificaton, and Conservation in Arid Climates by : Mattheus F. A. Goosen
Download or read book Water Management, Purificaton, and Conservation in Arid Climates written by Mattheus F. A. Goosen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-07-21 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new three volume series presents a broad and integrated approach to water management, purification, and conservation in arid climates. Volume one includes an introductory chapter on water problems and water resources in arid climates followed by specific chapters covering various aspects of water management. Volumes two and three deal with water purification and water conservation, respectively. Many textbooks on water issues normally deal with only one of these areas. This series covers all three areas with an emphasis on the problems faced by arid regions. The three volume series will appeal to industry specialists in desalination and wastewater treatment, irrigation engineers, graduate and undergraduate students in hydrology, water management and conservation professionals, government personnel involved in water resources development, decision makers, environmentalists, employees of the petrochemical industry, and individuals wishing to specialize in water management, purification and conservation.
