Book excerpt: Ground states of strongly-correlated electron systems can be affected profoundly if subjected to high magnetic field. In this thesis, we use torque magnetometry as well as modulation field de Haas-van Alphen measurement to measure the magnetic response of three different systems involving of quantum criticality and phase transitions. We employed torque magnetometry in magnetic fields up to 33 T in dc magnets and 65 T in pulsed magnets to the undedoped high Tc cuprate YBCO at 4 K. We observed diamagnetism in two differently doped crystals up to the highest fields applied. While this diamagnetism may still arise from weak bulk superconductivity, it can also be caused by superconducting fluctuations or a reduction of normal state paramagnetism. We also observed that the differential susceptibility dM/dB is rapidly suppressed for B > 16 T, but saturates at a small positive value at higher field. dM/dB departs from linear behaviour with increasing applied field at a characteristic field Hd, and temperature dependence as well as the magnitude of Hd matches the proposed critical field Hc2 = 24 T from previous transport measurements (Grissonnanche et al., Nat. Comm., 4. 3280 (2014)). Using the modulation field method, we measured quantum oscillations of the newly discovered antiferromagnet URhIn5 . We find that the Fermi surface (FS) consists of four sheets, two nearly spherical sheets and two larger orbits that may originate on one cylindrical FS. Multiple copies of these surfaces are needed to match the experimental value of the specific heat coefficient Îł. Advanced band structure calculations are needed to establish the exact FS topology. We also applied the modulation field method to measure the susceptibility of Sr3Ru2O7 at the quantum critical point of the high field anisotropic phase. We observed that the amplitude of the susceptibility peak at the QCP follows a power law with temperature, and determined the critical exponent to be between 2/3 and 1. We could only resolve one dHvA frequency inside the phase at 1 kT, which exhibited neither mass enhancement nor frequency field dependence. Further studies on better crystals would be needed.

Book excerpt: This is the second in a series of miniworkshops and Adriatico conferences devoted to the exciting field of strongly correlated electron systems including quantum Hall effect, metal insulator transition, heavy fermions and high Tc superconductivity. In spite of enormous efforts made by physicists worldwide to solve these difficult problems, many important issues are still widely open and this topic remains the most active field in condensed matter physics. The review talks and reports on original research given by the experts in the field represent a state-of-the-art summary of this fast-moving field.

Download or read book Lecture Notes On Electron Correlation And Magnetism written by Patrik Fazekas and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-01-25 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume attempts to fill the gap between standard introductions to solid state physics, and textbooks which give a sophisticated treatment of strongly correlated systems. Starting with the basics of the microscopic theory of magnetism, one proceeds with relatively elementary arguments to such topics of current interest as the Mott transition, heavy fermions, and quantum magnetism. The basic approach is that magnetism is one of the manifestations of electron-electron interaction, and its treatment should be part of a general discussion of electron correlation effects.Though the text is primarily theoretical, a large number of illustrative examples are brought from the experimental literature. There are many problems, with detailed solutions. The book is based on the material of lectures given at the Diploma Course of the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, and later at the Technical University and the R. Eötvös University of Budapest, Hungary.

Book Synopsis Exactly Solvable Models Of Strongly Correlated Electrons by : Fabian H L Essler
Download or read book Exactly Solvable Models Of Strongly Correlated Electrons written by Fabian H L Essler and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-05-24 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems of strongly correlated electrons are at the heart of recent developments in condensed matter theory. They have applications to phenomena like high-Tc superconductivity and the fractional quantum hall effect. Analytical solutions to such models, though mainly limited to one spatial dimension, provide a complete and unambiguous picture of the dynamics involved. This volume is devoted to such solutions obtained using the Bethe Ansatz, and concentrates on the most important of such models, the Hubbard model. The reprints are complemented by reviews at the start of each chapter and an extensive bibliography.

Download or read book Opportunities in High Magnetic Field Science written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-07-26 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-field magnetsâ€"those that operate at the limits of the mechanical and/or electromagnetic properties of their structural materialsâ€"are used as research tools in a variety of scientific disciplines. The study of high magnetic fields themselves is also important in many areas such as astrophysics. Because of their importance in scientific research and the possibility of new breakthroughs, the National Science Foundation asked the National Research Council to assess the current state of and future prospects for high-field science and technology in the United States. This report presents the results of that assessment. It focuses on scientific and technological challenges and opportunities, and not on specific program activities. The report provides findings and recommendations about important research directions, the relative strength of U.S. efforts compared to other countries, and ways in which the program can operate more effectively.

Download or read book High Magnetic Fields In The Physics Of Semiconductors - Proceedings Of The 12th International Conference (In 2 Volumes) written by Gottfried Landwehr and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-04-23 with total page 1108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions presented at the 12th International Conference on High Magnetic Fields in Semiconductor Physics. In order to give an overview, 37 lecturers not only reviewed the latest results in their field, but also gave a general introduction. The rapid development of semiconductor physics and technology during the last few years has resulted in an extensive application of high magnetic fields in both fundamental and applied research; more than 160 contributed papers were presented as posters.Sixteen years after its discovery, the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is still a subject of high activity. Many new results on the fractional QHE were presented; in addition to 6 invited papers, there were 43 contributions. Another field of high activity is magneto-optics, and 49 posters were presented. Magnetotransport also turned out to be of high interest, and magnetic semiconductors played a prominent role at the conference, too.Without doubt, the availability of superconducting magnets in most laboratories contributed to the growth of semiconductor physics in high magnetic fields. Because not all experiments can be performed in fields up to 10 or 15 teslas, high magnetic field laboratories offering larger fields are indispensable. There were reports from four laboratories on present work going on at these installations.

Download or read book Correlated Electrons In Quantum Matter written by Peter Fulde and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012-08-08 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of the effects of electronic correlations in quantum systems is one of the most challenging problems in physics, partly due to the relevance in modern high technology. Yet there exist hardly any books on the subject which try to give a comprehensive overview on the field covering insulators, semiconductors, as well as metals. The present book tries to fill that gap.It intends to provide graduate students and researchers a comprehensive survey of electron correlations, weak and strong, in insulators, semiconductors and metals. This topic is a central one in condensed matter and beyond that in theoretical physics. The reader will have a better understanding of the great progress which has been made in the field over the past few decades.
