The first report describes the effect of different elastic-ideally plastic constitutive model formulations on calculated ground shock, while the second report describes the effect of different bottom boundary conditions. The report documents the results of a parameter study conducted to determine the effects of using different types of nonlinear constitutive models to fit a given set of soil property data in calculations of high-explosive, airblast-induced, superseismic ground shock. Book excerpt: A parametric study was conducted to determine the effect of using various nonlinear elastic-plastic constitutive model formulations to fit a given set of soil property data in calculating high-explosive (HE), airblast-induced, superseismic ground shock. The code used was a modified version of the 2D axisymmetric LAYER code developed by the Paul Weidlinger firm. A constant shear modulus model, a constant Poisson's ratio model, and a hybrid-type model were employed. Two series of calculations were performed. In the first, the effect of an HE-type airblast on a deep highly compressible layer of soil was investigated for the three different models. In the second series, a two-layer soil profile comprising a shallow layer of highly compressible soil over a deep highly incompressible material was used. The study showed that the radial stress-, velocity-, and displacement-time histories at shallow depths were strongly influenced by the type of constitutive model used to represent the soils' mechanical behavior. Relatively large differences in maximum and final radial displacement were observed for the different models. (Author).

Book excerpt: A parametric study of the effects of rigid, roller, and transmitting bottom boundary conditions on high-explosive airblast-induced superseismic ground shock calculations was conducted using a WES-modified version of the two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric LAYER code. The constitutive relation used was a nonlinear, elastic-plastic, hybrid-type model. The constitutive properties used were those of the two-layered soil profile employed in Report 1 of this series. Seven different calculations were performed to study the effects of the depth to the bottom boundary and the differences in ground shock resulting from the use of different types of boundaries at a given depth. Results of this study showed that the transmitting boundary provides an adequate simulation of an elastic medium beyond the calculation domain for a large class of finite difference 2D nuclear ground shock boundary value problems in elastic, inelastic, and layered media under superseismic conditions. Book excerpt: This report describes a study which used elastic wave propagation theory to predict ground motion produced by airburst explosions of spherical charges. The air-earth environment was treated as three elastic layers (air, soil, and rock) separated by plane parallel boundaries. The explosion was approximated by a point source in an elastic fluid. The exact, closed form integral solutions of L. Cagniard for the reflection and refraction of spherical waves in elastic solids were extended to model the ground shock propagation in layered earth. Nonlinear empirical airblast arrival time and pressure source waveform formulae were developed and were used as source inputs for the elastic calculations. A computer code CAGGS was developed to evaluate the integral solutions to produce ground shock particle velocity waveforms. Calculations were compared with experimental records, for soil-soil, soil-rock, and rock sites. At gage locations where the airblast overpressures are less than approximately 40 psi for weak soils and over 100 psi for strong rocks, these comparisons show generally good agreement in the important characteristics amplitude, pulse shape, and arrival times. The results of the study indicate that the CAGGS code can be a valuable tool for studying the basic characteristics and effects of the controlling parameters of ground shock in layered earth media. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While numerous advanced statistical approaches have recently been developed for quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, the methods are scattered throughout the literature. Statistical Methods for QTL Mapping brings together many recent statistical techniques that address the data complexity of QTL mapping. After introducing basic genetics topics and statistical principles, the author discusses the principles of quantitative genetics, general statistical issues of QTL mapping, commonly used one-dimensional QTL mapping approaches, and multiple interval mapping methods. He then explains how to use a feature selection approach to tackle a QTL mapping problem with dense markers. The book also provides comprehensive coverage of Bayesian models and MCMC algorithms and describes methods for multi-trait QTL mapping and eQTL mapping, including meta-trait methods and multivariate sequential procedures. This book emphasizes the modern statistical methodology for QTL mapping as well as the statistical issues that arise during this process. It gives the necessary biological background for statisticians without training in genetics and, likewise, covers statistical thinking and principles for geneticists. Written primarily for geneticists and statisticians specializing in QTL mapping, the book can also be used as a supplement in graduate courses or for self-study by PhD students working on QTL mapping projects.
