In this report six models of ground roughness are considered. Ground roughness factors are found for each of the models, allowing one to correct from the calculated exposure rate due to unscattered radiation for a smooth field, provided the parameters of the model can be component are found in some cases. Experimental angular roughness factors are compared with those of the models. It is found that one model, the uniform volume source model, fits all the data well, and that the uniform absorbing layer model also fits the data satisfactorily. The more exotic models give angular roughness functions which have the wrong properties to fit the observed data. (Author).

Book excerpt: The protection factor of a simple cylindrical structure exposed to an infinite plane 60 Co source (~1.25 MeV) on the ground surface was calculated by Monte Carlo. The "buried-source" model was used to represent ground roughness. Source depths of 0, 0.5, and 1.0 in. were used to simulate smooth, rough, and very rough ground, respectively. The cylindrical structure was of concrete and had a 10-ft radius and an infinite height. Wall thicknesses of 20, 40, and 80 psf and detector heights of 3, 13, and 23 feet were considered. The quantities calculated included the energy and angle distributions of the photons incident upon the structure and at the detector inside. The 60 Co source was assumed to be representative of fallout.

Book excerpt: A study was made of four models for calculating the effect of ground roughness on the gamma-ray energy and angular distribution in air above a fallout field. One model, called the 'buried-source model', assumes that a uniform thin layer of soil covers the fallout with the thickness of the layer corresponding to the degree of ground roughness. Another, called the 'mixed-source model', assumes that the fallout is mixed with a thin layer of soil. A third model, called the 'collimated-source model', assumes that the fallout is deposited on a smooth ground surface but that the gamma-ray emission is constrained to certain angular sectors. The last model, called the 'furrowed-surface model', assumes that the fallout is distributed over a ground surface which has uniform concentric circular furrows. Calculations of the energy and angular distributions of the uncollided and the singly scattered fluxes three feet above sources with one or more energies were performed using each of the models. Comparisons with measured data and consideration of the convenience of application indicate that the buried- and mixed-source models are preferable to the other two. The results indicate that the magnitude and the angular distribution of the uncollided flux is strongly influenced by ground roughness. The singly scattered flux, which can actually be increased by ground roughness, is much less sensitive to ground roughness than is the uncollided flux. (Author).

The two buildings studied were a lightly constructed building with a basement, and an underground group shelter. An idealized fallout radiation field was simulated by the use of a sealed radioactive Co6° source that was pumped at a uniform speed through a long length of flexible tubing evenly distributed over the area of interest. Radiation levels at selected points inside the structures were measured with sensitive ionization- chamber detectors. These measurements were compared with measurements taken under actual fallout conditions at an earlier time and were also compared with the theoretical calculations. Protection factors from fallout data and mobile radiological measurements (MRMU) at the basement structure compared roughly within a factor of 2. This was good, considering the limitations of the two sets of data and other factors affecting the differences. Comparisons between protection factors from fallout data and MRMU data at the underground group shelter were excellent. MRMU data and theoretical calculations also compared satisfactorily. (auth).

Although trying to keep the book down to a reasonable size, the editors have aimed at a complete presentation of the subject, covering and linking both the tech nology and the science of shielding. However, inconsisten cies that could not be eliminated are identified whenever possible.
