Book excerpt: What Is Ground Level Power Supply In the concept and group of technologies known as ground-level power supply (also known as surface current collection or, in French, alimentation par le sol), electric vehicles collect electric power at ground level from individually powered segments as opposed to the more common overhead power lines. The usage of a power supply located at ground level has been done largely for aesthetic reasons. In the latter part of the 2010s, it began to compete well with the overhead lines in terms of cost. How You Will Benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Ground-level power supply Chapter 2: Tram Chapter 3: Light rail Chapter 4: Overhead line Chapter 5: Third rail Chapter 6: Alstom Citadis Chapter 7: Pantograph (transport) Chapter 8: Conduit current collection Chapter 9: Bombardier Guided Light Transit Chapter 10: Tramway track Chapter 11: History of trams Chapter 12: Stud contact system Chapter 13: Reims tramway Chapter 14: Current collector Chapter 15: Rubber-tyred tram Chapter 16: Trams in France Chapter 17: Road-powered electric vehicle Chapter 18: Torquay Tramways Chapter 19: Rio de Janeiro Light Rail Chapter 20: Acumulador de Carga R-pida Chapter 21: Alstom APS (II) Answering the public top questions about ground level power supply. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book facilitates the VLSI-interested individuals with not only in-depth knowledge, but also the broad aspects of it by explaining its applications in different fields, including image processing and biomedical. The deep understanding of basic concepts gives you the power to develop a new application aspect, which is very well taken care of in this book by using simple language in explaining the concepts. In the VLSI world, the importance of hardware description languages cannot be ignored, as the designing of such dense and complex circuits is not possible without them. Both Verilog and VHDL languages are used here for designing. The current needs of high-performance integrated circuits (ICs) including low power devices and new emerging materials, which can play a very important role in achieving new functionalities, are the most interesting part of the book. The testing of VLSI circuits becomes more crucial than the designing of the circuits in this nanometer technology era. The role of fault simulation algorithms is very well explained, and its implementation using Verilog is the key aspect of this book. This book is well organized into 20 chapters. Chapter 1 emphasizes on uses of FPGA on various image processing and biomedical applications. Then, the descriptions enlighten the basic understanding of digital design from the perspective of HDL in Chapters 2–5. The performance enhancement with alternate material or geometry for silicon-based FET designs is focused in Chapters 6 and 7. Chapters 8 and 9 describe the study of bimolecular interactions with biosensing FETs. Chapters 10–13 deal with advanced FET structures available in various shapes, materials such as nanowire, HFET, and their comparison in terms of device performance metrics calculation. Chapters 14–18 describe different application-specific VLSI design techniques and challenges for analog and digital circuit designs. Chapter 19 explains the VLSI testability issues with the description of simulation and its categorization into logic and fault simulation for test pattern generation using Verilog HDL. Chapter 20 deals with a secured VLSI design with hardware obfuscation by hiding the IC’s structure and function, which makes it much more difficult to reverse engineer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Railway Transportation Systems covers the entire range of railway passenger systems, from conventional and high-speed intercity systems to suburban, regional, operating on steep gradients, and urban ones. It also examines in depth freight railway systems transporting conventional loads, heavy loads, and dangerous goods. For each system, the text provides a definition; an overview of its evolution and examples of good practice; the main design, construction, and operational characteristics; and the preconditions for its selection. Additionally, it offers a general overview of safety, interfaces with the environment, forces acting on the track, and techniques that govern the stability and guidance of railway vehicles. This new edition brings two new chapters. One concerns pre-feasibility studies of urban rail projects, and the other analyses the operation of railway systems under specific weather conditions and natural phenomena. New material examines dilemmas, trends and innovations in rail freight transportation; a new definition for high-speed rail; a number of case studies; and an update of cutting-edge technologies. It is ideal for graduate students, engineers, consultants, manufacturers, and transport company executives who need a reference and guide.

Book excerpt: The design and fabrication of a high-intensity, 14-Mev neutron source which can be operated on a hoist platform on the 1500-ft BREN tower at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) has been determined to be feasible. Utilizing the T(d, n)-4He reaction, the source should be capable of producing, as a minimum, an average intensity of 10-13 neutrons/sec for periods up to 4 hr. The type and placement of power supplies, ion sources, targets, and vacuum equipment have been examined and a preliminary conceptual design completed. Control systems, testing procedures, and construction operations were studied and are presented. It is estimated that the neutron source will cost from 260,000 to 300,000, occupy approximately 400 ft-3, weigh approximately 7.5 tons and require about 10 months to complete.

Book excerpt: Public Mobility Systems deals with real case studies relating to mass transport, rapid transit services, carpooling measures and car sharing strategies. The included papers present case studies from all over the world including: Zagreb, Croatia; Mexico City, Mexico; Holy Makkah, Saudi Arabia and the Gauteng region of South Africa. Papers are also included which relate to the more theoretical aspects of transit systems, which span general methodology, the latest advancements and model analysis. It is well-known that model development cannot replace a deep knowledge and understanding of real world phenomena and human experiences. To this end, the book collects fragments of public mobility systems both from international practices and academic theory, in an effort to share current research and ideas to progress and lay the groundwork for future innovations. The book will be of interest to research and academic organisations as well as practitioners, especially in large civil engineering consultancies. Many papers from the book can also be used as advanced background reading in graduate courses on transport studies and traffic engineering.
