Book Synopsis GROUND BEETLES PT/1, by : Carl H. Lindroth
Download or read book GROUND BEETLES PT/1, written by Carl H. Lindroth and published by Intercept. This book was released on 1979-12-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These books are the translation of the study written in Sweden by the late Professor Carl H. Lindroth in German. Now fully translated, scientifically edited and doubly cross-checked at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, and at the Max-Planck Institute in Germany, these investigations are available for the first time in English. The term Fennoscandia includes all of Sandinavia, Finland, Lapland and Karelia. It not only includes the major investigations done by Professor Lindroth, but also summarizes research done during more than 100 years on Nordic beetles of the family Carabidae. It contains material through Lindroth's own collecting activities and observations, as well as an examination of data of other entomologists. The work is organized in three parts, covering between them the distribution, ecology, biology and other significant zoogeographic facts summarized for every species (in alphabetical order). Maps covering Fennoscandia and its regions (again arranged alphabetically) are included, with a separate map given for each species. The final volume contains general analysis with a discussion of the biogeographic principles.

Book Synopsis Carabid Beetles: Ecology and Evolution by : K. Desender
Download or read book Carabid Beetles: Ecology and Evolution written by K. Desender and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Carabidae form one of the largest and best studied families of insects, occurring in nearly every terrestrial habitat. The contributions included in this book cover a broad spectrum of recent research into this beetle family, with an emphasis on various aspects of ecology and evolution. They deal both with individual carabid species, for example in studies on population and reproductive biology or life history in general, and with ground beetle communities, as exemplified in papers treating assemblages in natural habitats, on agricultural land and in forests. Disciplines range from biogeography and faunistics, over morphology, taxonomy and phylogenetics, ecophysiology and functional ecology, to population, community, conservation and landscape ecology. This volume is the result of the 8th European Carabidologists' Meeting, 2nd International Symposium of Carabidology, September 1-4, 1992, Belgium.
Book Synopsis Evolutionary Biology of Carabus Ground Beetles by : Teiji Sota
Download or read book Evolutionary Biology of Carabus Ground Beetles written by Teiji Sota and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-11-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the whole picture of the ecological and evolutionary study on the ground beetle group, the subgenus Ohomopterus of the genus Carabus, endemic to Japan. This flightless beetle group consists of many geographic races. They show divergence in key traits for reproductive isolation—body size and genital morphology, which leads to coexistence of two or more species. This beetle group provides an important material to study how a lineage of organisms diversify and form multi-species assemblage, and thereby multiply their species richness. The book introduces novel genomic approaches to resolve questions about evolution of Ohomopterus. The readers will find that this story of evolution in Carabus beetles revealed by recent approaches is much different from what was told in previous literature. Exploring different cases across a wide range of lineages is important in constructing a synthetic theory of species radiation and richness, including speciation and species coexistence. This study on Ohomopterus beetles contributes to the ongoing discussion to understand how and why species multiply and how species richness increases in one area of our planet.

Book Synopsis Ecology and conservation of the Dutch ground beetle fauna by : Hans Turin
Download or read book Ecology and conservation of the Dutch ground beetle fauna written by Hans Turin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decades, large amounts of data about carabids have been collected in the Netherlands, initially for the purpose of creating distribution maps for the country. In addition to information from collections and faunistic publications, a significant amount of data came from ecological studies using pitfall traps. Because of the rich tradition of carabidological research in the Netherlands, an exceptionally large database of these pitfall data is available. The database is a mix of approximately 1,500 short-term samples and circa 4,400 so-called 'year-samples', for which pitfalls were functional during the whole activity period of ground beetles in spring and autumn. These year-samples came from 2,850 sites, covering the period of 1953-2018, and represent all habitats on the Dutch landscape. These data offer an unusual view of the presence and activity of this common insect family. The data gathered from pitfall trapping is summarised and provides a fresh integrated perspective about the Dutch ground beetle fauna. The characteristic species composition of 17 habitat groups is described in detail. Over 320 species present in the database have been classified into six main groups, according to their patterns of habitat use. Both the classification of habitats and associated species have been tested and used in various analyses in the book. Two chapters give special attention to changes in the Dutch fauna over the past 66 years by means of extensive trend analysis and relate this understanding to nature conservation. The book provides an extension and update for Turin's (2000) atlas. The Dutch carabid fauna is discussed considering relevant literature but uses predominantly European studies to put the faunal patterns in broader context. This book presents the story of Dutch ground beetles and illustrates the contribution of pitfall trapping to our understanding of the ecology of this fascinating and unusually well-studied group of beetles.
Book Synopsis Coleoptera, Beetles. Morphology and Systematics by : Rolf G. Beutel
Download or read book Coleoptera, Beetles. Morphology and Systematics written by Rolf G. Beutel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised edition of the first of three volumes in the Handbook of Zoology series which treats the systematics and biology of Coleoptera. With over 380,000 described species, Coleoptera are by far the most species-rich order of insects and the largest group of animals of comparable geological age. Moreover, numerous species are tremendously important economically. The beetle volumes meet the demand of modern biologists seeking to answer questions about Coleoptera phylogeny, evolution, and ecology. This first Coleoptera volume covers the suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga and Adephaga, and the basal series of Polyphaga, with information on world distribution, biology, morphology of all life stages, phylogeny and comments on taxonomy.

Book Synopsis Carabid Beetles in Their Environments by : H.U. Thiele
Download or read book Carabid Beetles in Their Environments written by H.U. Thiele and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing numbers of research workers and groups of investigators devoting themselves to the ecology of carabids I felt that the time had come to take stock of the existing knowledge in this field and to endeavour to weld my personal results and those of other workers into a comprehensive picture. It was with these aims in mind that the following study was conceived. A further goal was to attempt to show to what extent research on carabids can contribute to the larger fields of research encompassing ecology, ethology and evolution. In my opinion the investigations on carabids permit us to draw conclusions of general applicability and, as such, comparable with those made in recent years upon other groups of animals. I am well aware of the risk involved nowadays in attempting, on one's own, to integrate results from a wide variety of scientific disciplines into a meaningful whole, and for this reason I am always grateful for corrections and for additional information. It is impossible for me to mention by name all of the col leagues who have given me their support in the preparation of the book. Reprints of their publications have been placed at my disposal by almost all of the authors cited, as well as by others whose names and works have been omitted merely in order to prevent the book from taking on encyclopedic pro portions. I am nevertheless indebted to them all for their cooperation.
