Book Synopsis A Stage for Debate by : Martin Wagner
Download or read book A Stage for Debate written by Martin Wagner and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2023-05-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Stage for Debate presents a detailed analysis of the repertoire of the leading German-language stage of the nineteenth century, Vienna’s Burgtheater. The book explores the extent to which the Burgtheater repertoire contributed to important political and cultural debates on individual liberty, the role of women in society, and the understanding of national and regional identity. The relevance of the Burgtheater as a forum for political debate is assessed not by the degree to which the performed plays transgressed established norms, but by the range of positions that were voiced on a given topic. Martin Wagner investigates the roughly 1,000 plays from across Europe that were introduced to the Burgtheater’s repertoire between 1814 and 1867 by combining a general overview with detailed interpretations of especially successful plays. Wagner reveals that the Burgtheater was significantly more involved in contemporary debates than the stereotype of this stage as an artistically refined but apolitical institution suggests. Drawing from theatre studies and German and Austrian studies more broadly, A Stage for Debate revises the history of one of Europe’s leading theatres.
Book Synopsis Crossing Borders, Crossing Cultures by : Massimo Rospocher
Download or read book Crossing Borders, Crossing Cultures written by Massimo Rospocher and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the challenges and possibilities of research into the European dimensions of popular print culture. Popular print culture has traditionally been studied with a national focus. Recent research has revealed, however, that popular print culture has many European dimensions and shared features. A group of specialists in the field has started to explore the possibilities and challenges of research on a wide, European scale. This volume contains the first overview and analysis of the different approaches, methodologies and sources that will stimulate and facilitate future comparative research. This volume first addresses the benefits of a media-driven approach, focussing on processes of content recycling, interactions between text and image, processes of production and consumption. A second perspective illuminates the distribution and markets for popular print, discussing audiences, prices and collections. A third dimension refers to the transnational dimensions of genres, stories, and narratives. A last perspective unravels the communicative strategies and dynamics behind European bestsellers. This book is a source of inspiration for everyone who is interested in research into transnational cultural exchange and in the fascinating history of popular print culture in Europe.

Download or read book A Residence on the Shores of the Baltic written by Elizabeth Rigby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1841 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Elizabeth Rigby (1809-1893) embarked on her travels to the Baltic states in 1838, she was already a published author. She was to play a significant role as a writer and public figure throughout the nineteenth century. Originally published in 1841 as two separate volumes, this book is a compilation of letters written to her mother during her journey to Estonia. Travelling alone was an unusual undertaking for a single woman at the time, and here she demonstrates her ability to provide detailed descriptions of the life and places she experiences. The first volume describes her journey to Reval (Tallinn) in Estonia, where she will stay with her sister. The second offers her fascinating insights into the political and social life of Estonia in the mid-nineteenth century, combining personal observations and historical facts.
