It includes the narratives of ‘The Golden Bird’, ‘Tom Thumb’, ‘Rapunzel’, ‘Snow-Drop’, ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’, ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’, ‘Ashputtel’, and many more. Harry Rountree (1878 – 1950), was a prolific illustrator, originally from New Zealand, known for his frequent and fruitful collaborations with other artists – such as this joint venture, with Ruth Moorwood. The Brothers Grimm are perhaps the best known folklorists of all time. Die Brüder Grimm; Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors – who together specialized in collecting and publishing folklore during the nineteenth century. The popularity of their collected tales has endured well; they have been translated into more than 100 languages, and remain in print in the present day. This is a text to be appreciated by young and old alike; extraordinary for its literary as well as artistic significance.

Book excerpt: The House of the Sleeping Winds and Other Stories Some Based on Cornish Folklore is a bright wholesome volume of stories, founded on the lore of the old-world Cornish folk. From fairies, wishes, small people and quaint songs, this collection of delicate stories will enthrall children of all ages and adults alike. Stories include ‘The House of the Sleeping Winds’, ‘Hunting the Fairies’, ‘The Wishing Song’, An Enchanted Field’, ‘The Piskey Spoon’, ‘The Little Weather Man’, The Piskey Shoemaker,’ A Piskey Who Rose in a Pocket’, and ‘The Golden Egg’. Nellie Sloggett was an author and folklorist born in 1851 from Padstow, Cornwall. She wrote under the names Enys Tregarthen and Nellie Cornwall. At 17 she suffered a devastating spinal illness and was paralysed for the rest of her life. She began to keep diaries about flowers, the changing seasons, and birds and other creatures, all observed from her bedside window. This practice eventually led to the writing and publication of her first book, Daddy Longlegs, and His White Heath Flower, in 1885, under the pen-name Nellie Cornwall. Later she came to devote much of her attention to Cornish folklore and legend. She collected and recorded many stories about the Piskey folk, fairies of Cornish myth and legend. She published most of her works in this category under her better-known pen-name of Enys Tregarthen. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

This collection of the Brothers Grimm Stories brings together some of their best known and loved tales, such as: ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘The Valiant Little Tailor’, ‘Rapunzel’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ and ‘The Golden Goose’. The Brothers Grimm (or Die Brüder Grimm), Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors – who together specialized in collecting and publishing folklore during the nineteenth century. The popularity of their collected tales has endured well; they have been translated into more than 100 languages, and remain in print in the present day. Hansel and Gretel and other Brothers Grimm Stories is accompanied by the dazzling colour and black and white illustrations of Kay Nielsen (1886 – 1957). Nielsen was a Danish artist belonging to the golden age of illustration. He was influenced by Japanese art and the Swedish folklore – becoming a crucial participant in the Art Nouveaux movement. His art is characterised by long, swooping lines, open spaces and a certain macabre, yet ephemeral quality. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate the Brothers Grimm’s masterful storytelling.

Book excerpt: Old, Old Fairy Tales contains several of the best loved fairy-tales by true masters of the genre, including the Brother's Grimm's 'Briar Rose', 'The Frog Prince' and 'Rumplestiltskin', Charles Perrault's 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Blue Beard' and 'Puss in Boots' as well as Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid.' Old English tales such as 'Jack, the Giant Killer' are also encompassed. All of these wonderful tales are accompanied by colour, and black-and-white illustrations by Anne Anderson (1874-1930). She was a much celebrated Scottish illustrator, primarily known for her art nouveau children's book illustrations, although she also painted etched and designed greeting cards. These truly delicate and elegant works signalled the apogee of the Edwardian Era and the so-called 'golden age' of British illustration; as much appreciated today as they were then. The fairy-tales are presented here in their original translations, alongside Anderson's beautiful images. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.
