Download or read book Chanting the Psalms written by Cynthia Bourgeault and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chanting the psalms, or psalmody, is an ancient practice of vital importance in the Christian spiritual tradition. Today many think of it as a discipline that belongs only in monasteries—but psalmody is a spiritual treasure that is available to anyone who prays. You don’t need to be musical or a monk to do it, and it can be enjoyed in church liturgical worship, in groups, or even individually as part of a personal rule of prayer. Cynthia Bourgeault brings the practice into the twenty-first century, providing a history of Christian psalmody as well as an appreciation of its place in contemplative practice today. And she teaches you how to do it as you chant along with her on the accompanying CD in which she demonstrates the basic techniques and easy melodies that anyone can learn. “Even if you can’t read music,” Cynthia says, “or if somewhere along the way you’ve absorbed the message that your voice is no good or you can’t sing on pitch, I’ll still hope to show you that chanting the psalms is accessible to nearly everyone.”

Book Synopsis Anglican Psalter by : Pointed and edited for chanting by JOHN SCOTT
Download or read book Anglican Psalter written by Pointed and edited for chanting by JOHN SCOTT and published by Canterbury Press Norwich. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Coverdale's translation of the Psalms from the Book of Common Prayer, the very best of Anglican chant is married to texts that have been used to sing the transcendent glory of God for three thousand years. The Psalms are ruthlessly honest in their portrayal of conflicting human emotions, and many psalters have excised the verses that speak of vengeance, hatred and anger. Acknowledging that these emotions are also part of human experience, the Anglican Psalter retains this material, to be included or omitted as local preference or the occasion dictates. Includes work by renowned composers past and present including Elgar, Parry, Stanford, Stainer, Wesley, Malcolm Archer, David Willcocks, John Barnard, and many more.
Book Synopsis Songs of Sacrifice by : Rebecca Maloy
Download or read book Songs of Sacrifice written by Rebecca Maloy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the seventh and eleventh centuries, Christian worship on the Iberian Peninsula was structured by rituals of great theological and musical richness, known as the Old Hispanic (or Mozarabic) rite. Much of this liturgy was produced during a seventh-century cultural and educational program aimed at creating a society unified in the Nicene faith, built on twin pillars of church and kingdom. Led by Isidore of Seville and subsequent generations of bishops, this cultural renewal effort began with a project of clerical education, facilitated through a distinctive culture of textual production. Rebecca Maloy's Songs of Sacrifice argues that liturgical music--both texts and melodies--played a central role in the cultural renewal of early Medieval Iberia, with a chant repertory that was carefully designed to promote the goals of this cultural renewal. Through extensive reworking of the Old Testament, the creators of the chant texts fashioned scripture in ways designed to teach biblical exegesis, linking both to patristic traditions--distilled through the works of Isidore of Seville and other Iberian bishops--and to Visigothic anti-Jewish discourse. Through musical rhetoric, the melodies shaped the delivery of the texts to underline these messages. In these ways, the chants worked toward the formation of individual Christian souls and a communal Nicene identity. Examining the crucial influence of these chants, Songs of Sacrifice addresses a plethora of long-debated issues in musicology, history, and liturgical studies, and reveals the potential for Old Hispanic chant to shed light on fundamental questions about how early chant repertories were formed, why their creators selected particular passages of scripture, and why they set them to certain kinds of music.
