Book excerpt: Witchcraft, dark secrets, and demons. No one is safe in White Haven. Avery, one of the five White Haven witches, practices her magic alone and spends her days working in her bookshop, refusing to join the coven. However, days away from Litha, the summer solstice, a deceased customer bequeaths her a rune covered box and an intriguing letter that reveals the witches are missing a vital part of their history. The news shatters her organised life completely. Five ancient family grimoires are hidden in the town, and within their pages lies a secret. Unable to resist a mystery, Avery is determined to find them. However, the tarot cards predict danger, and when another witch—the sexy, but annoying Alex Bonneville—shares the same premonition, they know that an unknown enemy is determined to stop them using any means necessary. Avery never backs down from a fight, and Alex refuses to let her fight alone. When White Haven turns into a battleground of magic and demons, the witches’ lives will never be the same again. Shadow, a deadly fey warrior with little patience for mortals, ends up stranded in White Haven after her ride with the Wild Hunt ends in disaster. Gabe is one of seven Nephilim, newly arrived from the spirit world where they have been trapped for millennia. He has a violent history that haunts him, and a father he wants answers from—if he ever finds him. They all have skills that mere mortals don’t—superior strength, agility, speed, and dubious morals that give them flexibility in their work. Harlan Beckett, a collector for The Orphic Guild, an organisation that searches for magical and occult goods for a high price, is always looking for hunters, and their mysterious founder has more than a passing interest in the Nephilim. Harlan’s client has discovered a tomb that promises untold treasures. The only problem? He can’t get past the magic that seals it. Cue Shadow, Gabe, and the team. The trouble is, there’s more in the tomb than they expected, and soon the hunters become the hunted. If you love action-packed urban fantasy, plenty of magic and mystery, great characters, lots of humour, and a slow-burn romance, you’ll love Spirit of the Fallen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greenhaven/Pocket community is located just southwest of downtown Sacramento. Geographically, its unique location is within a meandering bend of the Sacramento River, thus termed "the Pocket" because it is bounded by the Sacramento River to the north, west, and south. Captured here in over 180 vintage images are the sorrows and triumphs of the area's earliest settlers, encompassing the continents of the world and spanning over a century. The Greenhaven/Pocket area was a rural farming community for 110 years before suburban development, with the most significant group of people contributing to the area's history and identity being Portuguese immigrants from the Azores Islands of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, and Terceira. They began arriving a few years after the Gold Rush and by 1880, almost half of the Portuguese population in Sacramento County was within these townships that encompassed and surrounded the Riverside/Pocket area. Pictured here is the evolution of this thriving community, from the earliest founding families and their sprawling ranches, to the Japanese settlement of World War I, and finally to the innovative Greenhaven 70 plan development in the 1960s that laid the foundation for today's community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumers have long been encouraged to reduce, reuse, and recycle, but environmental awareness has come a long way since the first Earth Day in 1970. Blue trash bins are everywhere the eye can see, and consumers know they have places to put certain materials to make a helpful impact on waste management. People are reminded in stores, restaurants, and other places that they can reuse items, or reduce waste by using items sparingly. This book examines what effect, if any, practicing the "three R's" has had on the planet, giving readers both sides of the topic.

Book excerpt: For many, nuclear anxiety is closely related to the Cold War between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II, the devastating potential of these weapons was all too clear, which led to significant anxiety among civilians, politicians, and military personnel over their use. Though the Cold War ended in 1991, anxieties surrounding nuclear armament remain, and the players involved in these nuclear standoffs have changed over recent decades. Your readers will explore the history and present status of nuclear weaponry, along with its social, political, and health impacts.

Miami Beach itself has become synonymous with international hedonism, the playground of the 'beautiful people'. Slightly further north of Miami Beach is the City of Sunny Isle Beach-also known as Little Moscow because of all the Russian money which funds the development of luxury, ocean-view condo-towers. No doubt some of the money is possibly legal. Lying between Miami Beach and Sunny Isles Beach is Haulover Beach, where everybody-beautiful or not - gets completely naked. Inland from all these beaches is the city of Greenhaven; an oasis of genteel respectability and refined sensibilities, holding itself proudly aloof from all its tawdry neighbors. That is, until they found the dead body on the beach.

Book excerpt: Gender, Ethnicity, and the State is a study of Latina and Latino prisoners in New York State. Through the use of two case studies, it compares the organizing strategies for reform pursued by Latina and Latino prisoners between 1970 and 1987, the support they received from non-Latina(o) prisoners and third parties, and the response of penal personnel to their calls for support. The work also contains information on Latino prisoner participation and community response to both the 1971 Attica Rebellion and the 1970 New York City jail rebellions. The data for this study was compiled through a combination of primary and secondary sources. Primary sources include in-depth interviews and oral histories conducted with Latina(o) and African-American ex-prisoners, prisoners' rights attorneys, community activists, and penal staff. Other primary sources include prisoner and mainstream English and Spanish language newspapers; prisoners' rights newsletters; court cases; and government and private organizational reports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radical reinterpretation of "Attica," the revolutionary 1970s uprising that galvanized abolitionist movements and transformed prisons. Tip of the Spear boldly and compellingly argues that prisons are a domain of hidden warfare within US borders. With this book, Orisanmi Burton explores what he terms the Long Attica Revolt, a criminalized tradition of Black radicalism that propelled rebellions in New York prisons during the 1970s. The reaction to this revolt illuminates what Burton calls prison pacification: the coordinated tactics of violence, isolation, sexual terror, propaganda, reform, and white supremacist science and technology that state actors use to eliminate Black resistance within and beyond prison walls. Burton goes beyond the state records that other histories have relied on for the story of Attica and expands that archive, drawing on oral history and applying Black radical theory in ways that center the intellectual and political goals of the incarcerated people who led the struggle. Packed with little-known insights from the prison movement, the Black Panther Party, and the Black Liberation Army, Tip of the Spear promises to transform our understanding of prisons—not only as sites of race war and class war, of counterinsurgency and genocide, but also as sources of defiant Black life, revolutionary consciousness, and abolitionist possibility.
