Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual assault is a problem that is prevalent on U.S. college campuses and is especially prevalent among Greek letter organizations. Further, not much is known on how perceptions of the college campus environment vary by social identity, such as Greek affiliation. This study was a secondary data analysis from a campus climate survey on sexual assault. Participants were 2,782 undergraduate students at Indiana University Bloomington. The present study examined differences between Greek and independent students on beliefs about campus safety, beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence, and bystander intervention confidence. Additionally, the study explored how Greek affiliation and gender influence beliefs about campus safety and beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence on bystander intervention confidence. Among Greek-affiliated students, the study also investigated the impacts of gender and knowledge of campus resources on beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence and bystander intervention confidence. Results indicate that women endorsed lower scores for beliefs about campus safety and beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence than men, and that Greek students reported a higher bystander intervention confidence (BIC) than independent students. Results also suggest that gender moderates the relationship between beliefs about campus safety and bystander intervention confidence. Similarly, gender was shown to moderate the relationship between beliefs about the university's response to reports of sexual violence and bystander intervention confidence in all students and within Greek affiliated students. A discussion of implications, limitations, and future directions for research, prevention, and intervention is included.

Book excerpt: When people think of a typical sexual assault, they rely heavily on preconceived notions of sexual violence, which often represents stereotypical rape scenarios. Many stereotypical depictions of perpetrators tend to be centered around individuals who are strangers, mentally ill, lonely, with poor or impoverished upbringing. How perpetrators and victims are depicted impact the likelihood of others believing victims and attributing guilt to perpetrators. This may contribute to societal endorsement of acquaintance rape as not real compared to stereotypical rape scenarios. The current study examines how college students, and in particular fraternity men and sorority women, view perpetrators of sexual assault. We focused on fraternity men and sorority women given Greek affiliated students' high risk for sexual assault perpetration and victimization. Affiliated Greek men are over represented among sexual assault perpetrators, and one-third of rapes occur in fraternity. Additionally, sorority women are also at elevated risk for victimization of sexual assault. Using Social Identity Theory, this study measured perpetrator perceptions of those in the in group (Greek affiliated) versus the out group (Non-affiliated) among 943 college students, in which 55% of which were Greek affiliated. Men had more stereotypes than women regarding rape myths, hostility toward women, and more stereotypical perceptions of perpetrators. There was no difference in perpetrator perceptions among sorority women and non-affiliated women. Fraternity men have higher stereotypical perceptions compared to all women, and non-Greek men. The current study demonstrates a relationship between perpetrator perceptions, rape myth acceptance, and hostility toward women, as well as more stereotypical perceptions especially for Greek men. Such findings have important implications for societal perceptions of sexual assault; the way individuals perceive perpetrators could effect the punishment on college campuses, in the criminal justice system, as well as society.

Book excerpt: Sexual assault describes any form of sexual contact between individuals that occurred without clear, expressed consent by the trauma survivor (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network, 2015). A national study reported that 27.7 of 1,000 college-aged women will be sexually assaulted (Fisher et al., 2000). Sorority membership is a risk factor for sexual assault in college-aged women due to high rates of alcohol consumption experienced at Greek social events (Minow & Einolf, 2009). Research disparities exist regarding sexual assault's impact on collegiate women of color with sorority membership (Barrick et al., 2012; Krebs et al., 2011; Henry, 2009). The purpose of this psychological study was to explore the perceptions that self-identified African American women with membership in Greek-letter sororities at a predominantly white institution (PWI) possessed regarding sexual assault. A qualitative methodology known as transcendental phenomenology, centered in Empowerment Feminist Therapy and Black Feminist Theory, served as the theoretical foundation of the researcher's exploration of the lived experiences of African American sorority women attending PWIs and their perceptions of sexual assault. The study participants included a total of 12 self-identified African American women with membership in Greek-letter sororities at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Results of this study included the identification of eight themes related to perceptions of sexual assault in African American sorority members attending PWIs. Participants' interviews provided insight about the sexual assault survivorship status of African American sorority members attending PWIs, demonstrated the impact of racialized and gendered stereotypes on participants' perceived risk for sexual assault, and revealed participants' beliefs about cultural norms for sexual expression and sexual behaviors across genders. In addition, the study participants expressed the multi-faceted manner in which their Greek membership served as both a protective and a risk factor for their potential sexual victimization at a PWI.

That figure has not changed since the 1980s, when people first began collecting data on sexual violence. What has changed is the level of attention that the American public is paying to these statistics. Reports of sexual abuse repeatedly make headlines, and universities are scrambling to address the crisis. Their current strategy, Donna Freitas argues, is wholly inadequate. Universities must take a radically different approach to educating their campus communities about sexual assault and consent. Consent education is often a one-time affair, devised by overburdened student affairs officers. Universities seem more focused on insulating themselves from lawsuits and scandals than on bringing about real change. What is needed, Freitas shows, is an effort by the entire university community to deal with the deeper questions about sex, ethics, values, and how we treat one another, including facing up to the perils of hookup culture-and to do so in the university's most important space: the classroom.
