Book excerpt: Lab is a political fable, a parable about Lab animals' struggle for a better life in an alien, hellish environment. Lab is a gripping examination of a shift from the Orwellian concept of 'all animals are equal' to a post-Orwellian premise that 'all animals are different.' The parable narrates the developments that occur in the Lab - from the initial harsh conditions to the majestic, glittering, virtual Labopolis and its endless sprawl. A bespectacled mouse with pinkish pale skin, Homo, is an interpreter for both the animals and the humans. When animals finally organize the rebellion in the Lab, Homo is their leader. Lab presents a totally administered, Kafkaesque world in which the simple event of a dog wagging his tail can employ innumerable bureaucrats, as well as scientists and activists. Its inter-textual playfulness embraces numerous references from Kafka, Orwell, Monty Python, Disney as well as guidelines from the handbook 'How to handle animals in American laboratories.'Although written in a simple style, the novel tackles the most ramified issues and dilemmas of late modernity: the great divide between humans and animals, the insecurities of the body as a final frontier, utopian desires for change in a world that more and more resembles the laboratory itself. Book excerpt: The English Pig is an account of pigs and pig-keeping from the sixteenth century to modern times, concentrating on the domestic, cottage pig, rather than commercial farming. In Victorian England the pig was an integral part of village life: both visible and essential. Living in close proximity to its owners, fed on scraps and the subject of perennial interest, the pig when dead provided the means to repay social and monetary debts as well as excellent meat. While the words associated with the pig, such as 'hoggish', 'swine' and 'pigsty', and phrases like 'greedy as a pig', associate the pig with greed and dirt, this book shows the pig's virtues, intelligence and distinctive character. It is a portrait of one of the most recognisable but least known of farm animals, seen here also in many photographs and other representations. The pig has a modest place in literature from Fielding's pig-keeping Parson Trulliber to Hardy's Jude the Obscure and to Flora Thompson's Lark Rise to Candleford. In modern times, while vanishing from the sight of most people, it has been sentimentalised in children's stories and commercialised in advertisements.

Book excerpt: A surprising history of how the pig has influenced Jewish identity Jews do not eat pig. This (not always true) observation has been made by both Jews and non-Jews for more than three thousand years and is rooted in biblical law. Though the Torah prohibits eating pig meat, it is not singled out more than other food prohibitions. Horses, rabbits, squirrels, and even vultures, while also not kosher, do not inspire the same level of revulsion for Jews as the pig. The pig has become an iconic symbol for people to signal their Jewishness, non-Jewishness, or rebellion from Judaism. There is nothing in the Bible that suggests Jews are meant to embrace this level of pig-phobia. Starting with the Hebrew Bible, Jordan D. Rosenblum historicizes the emergence of the pig as a key symbol of Jewish identity, from the Roman persecution of ancient rabbis, to the Spanish Inquisition, when so-called Marranos (“Pigs”) converted to Catholicism, to Shakespeare’s writings, to modern memoirs of those leaving Orthodox Judaism. The pig appears in debates about Jewish emancipation in eighteenth-century England and in vaccine conspiracies; in World War II rallying cries, when many American Jewish soldiers were “eating ham for Uncle Sam;” in conversations about pig sandwiches reportedly consumed by Karl Marx; and in recent deliberations about the kosher status of Impossible Pork. All told, there is a rich and varied story about the associations of Jews and pigs over time, both emerging from within Judaism and imposed on Jews by others. Expansive yet accessible, Forbidden offers a captivating look into Jewish history and identity through the lens of the pig.

Book excerpt: This book is the account of an ordinary woman trying to live life with good intentions, and translating those good intentions into action by helping others, in the aftermath of a really traumatic national event - 9/11/01. The primary focus is on Terror and its effects on a personal life, and indeed the life of the nation. Interwoven is a deep concern for fairness and justice, especially as regards children. No book should be complete without "politics!" There is that also. There is a mix of grief, anger and humor (the real elixir of life!)
