Book Synopsis CLARIN in the Low Countries by : Jan Odijk
Download or read book CLARIN in the Low Countries written by Jan Odijk and published by Ubiquity Press. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the results of activities undertaken to construct the CLARIN research infrastructure in the Low Countries, i.e., in the Netherlands and in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium). CLARIN is a European research infrastructure for humanities and social science researchers that work with natural language data. This book introduces the CLARIN infrastructure, describes various aspects of the technical implementation of the infrastructure, and introduces data, applications and software services created in the Low Countries for a wide variety of humanities disciplines. These enable researchers to accelerate their research activities and to base their conclusions on a much larger and richer empirical base than was possible before, thus providing a basis for carrying out groundbreaking research in which old questions can be investigated in new ways and new questions can be raised and investigated for the first time. Given CLARIN's focus on language data, linguistics and particularly syntax are prominently present. However, other humanities disciplines that work with natural language data such as history, literary studies, religion studies, media studies, political studies, and philosophy are represented as well. The book is a must read for humanities scholars and students who want to understand and use the potential that the Digital Humanities offer, as well as for computer scientists and developers of research infrastructures, in particular for researchers working on the CLARIN infrastructure in other countries.

Book excerpt: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER NIGEL - One of Britain's favourite dogs! MONTY DON - One of Britain's favourite presenters. When Monty Don's golden retriever Nigel became the surprise star of BBC Gardeners' World inspiring huge interest, fan mail and his own social media accounts, Monty Don wanted to explore what makes us connect with animals quite so deeply. In many respects Nigel is a very ordinary dog; charming, handsome and obedient, as so many are. He is a much loved family pet. He is also a star. By telling Nigel's story, Monty relates his relationships with the other special dogs in his life in a memoir of his dogs past and very much present. Witty, touching and life-affirming, Nigel: My family and other dogs is wonderfully heart-warming. Monty Don is a great writer coming out of the garden and into the hearts and homes of every dog lover in the UK. 'I have always had a dog, or dogs. I cannot imagine life without them. I am just as much a fan of Nigel as any besotted viewer. In the book I explore why we love dogs and what they mean to us emotionally and domestically. I look back on all the dogs in my life - all of which I have loved deeply and which have been an essential part of my life. So, this is the book of Nigel - but also the book of all our dogs in every British family and a celebration of the deep love we feel for them' Monty Don

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Last Surviving Dinosaur: The TyrantoCrankaTsuris introduced the kid readers to the tiniest, most dangerous dinosaur on the planet: The TyrantoCrankaTsuris. All humans descended from this tiny dinosaur—and this follow-up book for adults examines how “crankiness” is part of our nature. Using good humor throughout, Steven Joseph observes that we typically do not hesitate to pour out our CrankaTsuris all over our spouses, kids, parents, and siblings—and then there can be a CrankaTsuris retaliation. Before you know it, you are in the middle of a CrankaTsuris food fight. We’re all cranky at times, but it’s imperative we find a more effective way to be cranky while still making the world a happier place. In this book, learn how to: • Create space for both yours and your family’s crankiness • Utilize a fun “team” approach to crankiness • Take steps to avoid being too cranky • Improve communication with friends and family • Handle cranky dinosaurs in your life (including children) • Effectively diagnose and treat the “Common CrankaTsuris” When it comes to crankiness, the infection rate in a given room is likely close to 100 percent. When trying to manage that crankiness—as well as your own—the ultimate answer will always be love.
Book Synopsis Off with Their Heads! by : Maria Tatar
Download or read book Off with Their Heads! written by Maria Tatar and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Hansel and Gretel try to eat the witch's gingerbread house in the woods, are they indulging their "uncontrolled cravings" and "destructive desires" or are they simply responding normally to the hunger pangs they feel after being abandoned by their parents? Challenging Bruno Bettelheim and other critics who read fairy tales as enactments of children's untamed urges, Maria Tatar argues that it is time to stop casting the children as villians. In this provocative book she explores how adults mistreat children, focusing on adults not only as hostile characters in fairy tales themselves but also as real people who use frightening stories to discipline young listeners.
