Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Way of All Flesh," an autobiographical account of a harsh Victorian upbringing and troubled adulthood, was penned by Samuel Butler and hailed by George Bernard Shaw as "one of the summits of human achievement." Butler's novel satirizes Victorian hypocrisy in its chronicle of the life and loves of Ernest Pontifex. Along the way, it offers a powerful indictment of 19th-century England's major institutions. Beginning with the life of John Pontifex, a carpenter, the novel traces four generations of the Pontifex family, each of which perpetuates the frustration and unhappiness of its predecessor largely as a result of parental repression. Only Ernest Pontifex, the great-grandson of John, is able to break the cycle. After being ordained a minister, serving a prison term because of a naive misunderstanding, and unwittingly entering into a bigamous marriage with the family's sluttish servant girl, Ernest providentially inherits enough money from a favorite aunt to change his life and become a writer. Even today, 100 years after the book's publication, readers will find much to identify with in "The Way of All Flesh." Anyone who felt unjustly treated by his or her parents or teachers will find much to sympathize with here. Anyone who has wrestled with the conflict between Reason and Faith will find much to think about here. It is easy to see how many people have described reading Samuel Butler's "The Way of All Flesh" as a turning point in their lives.

The book offers Butler's thoughts on his surroundings and covers a broad variety of subjects, including literature, science, philosophy, and the arts. Butler makes insightful insights on everything from the value of Shakespeare's plays to the nature of human awareness in his work, which is known for its sharp humor. He also delves into more esoteric subjects like the essence of truth and the compatibility of science and religion. Butler's cynicism and irreverence are evident throughout the book as he questions accepted knowledge and makes fun of individuals in positions of authority. He is especially critical of the strict social mores and false morality of the Victorian age, which he lived in. Butler consistently exhibits great admiration for the beauty and intricacy of the natural world, as well as a conviction in the ability of literature and art to move people and inspire change, despite his pessimism. The Note-Books of Samuel Butler, a collection of essays that gives insights into the thinking of one of the most unique and intriguing thinkers of the Victorian era, is an overall thought-provoking and enjoyable collection of essays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Butler was one of the most interesting and unique novelists of the Victorian era. Though perhaps not one of the best known names of his times, he is very much revered by many who have read his works; his admirers include E.M. Forster and George Bernard Shaw, both of whom drew great inspiration from his work. Butler was known for, among other things, his satirical view of religion. He was openly critical of organised religion, arguing in particular that belief in the god of Christianity had simply evolved from a great many previous gods. As well as his criticisms, however, Butler also had many positive things to say and was well known for his philosophical outlook on life. This book brings together some of Butler’s most interesting thoughts on a variety of subjects.
