Book excerpt: An in-depth exploration of Ukraine through encounters with the many different people who live there. “Will someone pay for the spilled blood? No. Nobody.” Mikhail Bulgakov composed this ominous and prophetic phrase in Kiev amid the turmoil of the Russian civil war. Since then, Ukrainian borders have shifted constantly, and its people have suffered numerous military foreign interventions. Ukraine has only existed as an independent state since 1991, and what exactly it was before then is controversial among its people as well as its European neighbors. In Black Earth: A Journey through the Ukraine, journalist and celebrated travel writer Jens Mühling takes readers across the country amid the ousting of former president Viktor Yanukovych and the Russian annexation of Crimea. Mühling delves deep into daily life in Ukraine, narrating his encounters with Ukrainian nationalists and old communists, Crimean Tatars and Cossacks, smugglers, and soldiers. Black Earth connects all these stories to convey an unconventional and unfiltered view of Ukraine, a country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and the center of countless conflicts. In this paperback edition, a new preface is included that takes into account recent developments up to the 2022 war between Russia and Ukraine.

But in reality, the first war crime trial against the Nazis was in this tiny Ukrainian town, which is fitting, because it is where the Holocaust actually began. Judgment Before Nuremberg is also the story of Dawson’s personal journey to this place, to the scene of the crime, and the discovery of the trial which began the tortuous process of avenging the murder of his grandparents, great-grandparents and tens of thousands of fellow Ukrainians consumed at the dawn of the Shoah, a moment and crime now largely cloaked in darkness.

Book excerpt: 'Lively and engaging' Financial Times 'Empathetic and deeply humanising' Peter Pomerantsev, author of This is Not Propaganda Each time Ukraine has rebuilt itself over the last century, it has been plagued by the same conflicts: corruption, poverty, and most of all Russian aggression. Sophie Pinkham saw all this and more over ten years in Ukraine and Russia, a period that included the Maidan revolution of 2013-14, Russia's annexation of Crimea, and the ensuing war in Donbass. With a keen eye for the dark absurdities of post-Soviet society, Pinkham presents a dynamic account of contemporary Ukrainian life. She meet a charismatic doctor helping to smooth the transition to democracy even as he struggles with drug dependence; a band of Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian hippies in a Crimean idyll; and a Jewish clarinetist agitating for Ukrainian liberation. These fascinating personalities deliver an indelible impression of a country on the brink. Black Square is necessary reading for anyone who wishes to learn the roots of the current Russo-Ukrainian war and the personal stories of the people who live it every day. ___ 'Elegant, suggestive, ominous, beautiful, and deceptively simple . . . Perhaps the only thing more impressive than the sheer number and diversity of people Sophie Pinkham has spoken to is how deftly she has woven their stories into a single compulsively readable narrative.' Elif Batuman, author of The Idiot

Book excerpt: “A beautifully written evocation of Ukraine's brutal past and its shaky efforts to construct a better future.”—Financial Times Borderland tells the story of Ukraine. A thousand years ago it was the center of the first great Slav civilization, Kievan Rus. In 1240, the Mongols invaded from the east, and for the next seven centuries, Ukraine was split between warring neighbors: Lithuanians, Poles, Russians, Austrians, and Tatars. Again and again, borderland turned into battlefield: during the Cossack risings of the seventeenth century, Russia's wars with Sweden in the eighteenth, the Civil War of 1918-1920, and under Nazi occupation. Ukraine finally won independence in 1991, with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Bigger than France and a populous as Britain, it has the potential to become one of the most powerful states in Europe. In this finely written and penetrating book, Anna Reid combines research and her own experiences to chart Ukraine's tragic past. Talking to peasants and politicians, rabbis and racketeers, dissidents and paramilitaries, survivors of Stalin's famine and of Nazi labor camps, she reveals the layers of myth and propaganda that wrap this divided land. From the Polish churches of Lviv to the coal mines of the Russian-speaking Donbass, from the Galician shtetlech to the Tatar shantytowns of Crimea, the book explores Ukraine's struggle to build itself a national identity, and identity that faces up to a bloody past, and embraces all the peoples within its borders.

This book was released on 2022-09-22 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of the world economy indicates the growth of its integration and integrity through the deepening of specialization and cooperation of countries and business entities. Integration appears as an inevitable, objectively determined process that covers most spheres of economic life in the world, and takes place according to its own laws, general principles and goals, taking into account the various grounds, conditions and levels of such integration. Today, we can observe two mutually exclusive features of integration processes: globalization of the world economy and simultaneous national protectionism, which has gained considerable influence in the last decade. We are observing, on the one hand, the strengthening of integration processes in the world economy in all spheres of social life, there is a reassessment of the system of risks for the modern state and, most importantly, we are witnessing an increasing pragmatism of relations between countries, the basis of which is dominated by economic factors. At the same time, significant changes are taking place in the field of hospitality and tourism. The diversification of hospitality and tourism services, the development of the hospitality and tourism industry in new territories and competition in the market require the governments of different countries to reconsider their attitude to the development of this industry and to approach the development of its strategy more seriously. In modern conditions, the governments of many countries pay more attention to the formation of strategies for the development of regions, including strategies for the development of the hospitality and tourism industry. Considering the fact that the field of hospitality has changed significantly in recent years and continues to change, we have seen modern trends in the field of tourism and the hospitality industry, which are definitely relevant. The strategy for the development of the hospitality sector should harmoniously complement the socio-economic strategy of the country and combine the solution of priority socio-economic tasks: increasing the scientific, technical and innovative potential; increasing investment attractiveness and economic stability; improving the quality of life of residents. It should be noted that the first sector of the world economy affected by the global pandemic of COVID-19 is tourism. In the current conditions of the global pandemic, it is obvious that tourism is losing employees and customers due to the impossibility of flights to different countries and the risk of contracting the disease from COVID-19. Nevertheless, even in this situation, you can find a way out: to reorient from outbound tourism to domestic tourism and discover your country from a completely different side. At the same time, the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine are felt all over the world. Russian aggression has put pressure on global commodity prices, exacerbated disruptions in supply chains, and fueled inflation in most countries around the world. The world economy will lose a trillion dollars this year alone due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The presence of unsolved problems and the contradictions of certain issues, the theoretical and practical significance of researching the management processes of enterprises in the tourism sphere and the hotel and restaurant business determined the choice of the topic of the collective monograph. The topic of the study was chosen taking into account the importance for the development of the tourism sphere and the hotel and restaurant industry of Ukraine of the processes of unification and integration of enterprises, the formation of new formats and management structures in accordance with the objective requirements of world hospitality standards. The authors offer a monograph that is a summary of scientific searches and achievements regarding the results of research work of the Department of Management of Foreign Economic Activity, Hotel and Restaurant Business and Tourism of the Vinnytsia National Agrarian University on the initiative topic "Problems and prospects of the development of the hotel, restaurant and tourism industry in the conditions of integration processes".
