Book Synopsis Greater Syracuse by : Onondaga Historical Association
Download or read book Greater Syracuse written by Onondaga Historical Association and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999-10 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Syracuse area has always had its own distinct character, defined in early years by its salt manufacturing, and in later years by its railroads, architecture, diverse industry, and great sports moments. At the same time, life here has been shaped by events and trends that occurred on a broader scale. As a new century dawns, it becomes an opportune time to reflect upon the far-reaching experiences and impact of the twentieth century. In the early 1900s, like many American communities, greater Syracuse was transformed by the arrival of the automobile, the influx of new immigrants, and the changes brought about by the widespread availability of electricity. In the years that followed, greater Syracuse weathered the economic havoc of the Great Depression and the sacrifices of World War II, but emerged into a new era of prosperity and growth. During this period, the region adjusted to the construction of giant expressways, shopping centers, suburban housing, and the dawn of the television age. These developments left the community enjoying expanded opportunities while facing new challenges for urban revitalization.

Book Synopsis The Tyrants of Syracuse Volume I by : Jeff Champion
Download or read book The Tyrants of Syracuse Volume I written by Jeff Champion and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume one of this sweeping history chronicles the turbulent ancient history of Syracuse from the rise of Gelon to the death of Dionysius I. Situated at the heart of the Mediterranean, Syracuse was one of the most important city-states of the classical Greek world. Coveted for its wealth and strategic location, it was caught in the middle as Carthage, Epirus, Athens and then Rome each battled to gain control of the region. The threat of expansionist enemies on all sides made for a tumultuous situation within the city, resulting in repeated coups and a series of remarkable tyrants, such as Gelon, Timoleon and Dionysius. In volume one of The Tyrants of Syracuse, Jeff Champion traces the course of Syracuse's wars from the Battle of Himera against the Carthaginians down to the death of Dionysius I, whose reign proved to be the high tide of the city's power and influence. Within this period, Syracuse heroically defeated the Athenian force that besieged them for more than two years—an event with far-reaching ramifications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In American City X, editor Mark Robbins, former dean of Syracuse University's School of Architecture, argues that innovative and compelling architecture can not only enhance the way a city is perceived, but also change the way it works. Looking to Syracuse, NY, as the archetypal "American City X," the book showcases projects that demonstrate potential positive futures for post industrial cities across the country. Featuring renovations and ground-up constructions—ranging from landscapes to buildings and infrastructure—at both residential and institutional scales, the successful recent work in Syracuse addresses sustainability, material and formal experimentation, and inventive use of space for evolving community needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of great importance to scholars, collectors, dealers, and others interested in the history of ceramics, the decorative arts, and industrial culture, Syracuse China examines the birth, growth, and remarkable resilience over more than a century of one of America's major manufacturers of ceramic tableware. Drawing on the company's archives and historical collection of ware, the authors explore not only the history of its products but also the people who designed, made, decorated, sold, and used them. Syracuse China was the pioneer manufacturer of a distinctively American type of vitrified fine china, as well as the first American "rolled edge" shapes which revolutionized hotel and restaurant dining. The company was also a great leader in labor relations and marketing within its industry. Cleota Reed and Stan Skoczen's lively account of this fascinating chapter in the history of American material culture spans the Victorian age to the present. Collectors and enthusiasts will find the following features invaluable: — 30 color plates — 128 black-and-white photographs — A comprehensive visual listing of Syracuse China's back stamps — An appendix that enables the reader to identify Syracuse China shapes and patterns.
