Book excerpt: Although founded in 1841, Dallas did not experience significant growth until 1873 when the Texas and Pacific (T&P) Railroad crossed the Houston and Texas Central Railroad (H&TC) near downtown. Securing these railroads led to a prolific building boom that has never fully ended, even during the Great Depression and subsequent world wars. Dallas's ability to sustain growth and development as a banking and commercial center led to the demolition of much of the early built environment, a trend that continues even today. Lost Dallas explores and documents those buildings, neighborhoods, and places that have been lost and even forgotten since the city's modest antebellum beginning.

Book excerpt: As one of the leading cities of the modern south, Dallas, Texas is associated with a great deal of modern American history and culture. Home to the Mavericks, the Stars, and the Cowboys, Dallas has built a sports legend matched by only a few other cities. Whether one thinks of oil or even the depiction of such in the television series Dallas, the city has come to mean a great many things to different people. For those whose lives span far enough back, Dallas is associated with the tragic killing of President Kennedy. And while the tragedy tarnished its image for a time, Dallas has embraced its history and is fully prepared to tell its story on its own terms. Come along with Keith Pruitt and Rebekka Pruitt and they will take you to all the many sites and adventures of the greater Dallas Metroplex.

Book excerpt: In the years between the Civil War and World War I, a raw and vibrant city was forged out of the Texas blackland prairie by Eastern promoters and local opportunists; a city of opulent Victorian Gothic mansions, of elaborate cast-iron commercial emporiums, and of sharecropper shanties where the poor struggled to survive. This city, its monuments and ideology, have today almost totally vanished, replaced by a modern metropolis of reflective glass and abstractionist concrete.????Dallas Rediscovered examines this city in all its turn of the century splendor through hundreds of period photographs expertly reproduced by a duotone printing process, complemented by a lively and informative text.

Susanne Starling tells the fascinating story of Warren Angus Ferris, Rocky Mountain fur trader, surveyor, farmer, and "Father of Dallas County". Ferris was one of the two founders of Dallas, along with land speculator William P. King. But Ferris merited fame even before he came to Texas in 1837, for his remarkable story encompasses three arenas: the Niagara frontier of western New York, the fur-trading country of the Rocky Mountains, and frontier northeast Texas during the years of the Republic. Ferris served as the official surveyor for Nacogdoches County, which then included much of northeast Texas. Warren Ferris spent another thirty-five years of his eventful life in Texas.

Book excerpt: From The New York Times bestselling author of Prayers for Sale comes the moving and powerful story of a small town after a devastating avalanche, and the life changing effects it has on the people who live there Whiter Than Snow opens in 1920, on a spring afternoon in Swandyke, a small town near Colorado's Tenmile Range. Just moments after four o'clock, a large split of snow separates from Jubilee Mountain high above the tiny hamlet and hurtles down the rocky slope, enveloping everything in its path including nine young children who are walking home from school. But only four children survive. Whiter Than Snow takes you into the lives of each of these families: There's Lucy and Dolly Patch—two sisters, long estranged by a shocking betrayal. Joe Cobb, Swandyke's only black resident, whose love for his daughter Jane forces him to flee Alabama. There's Grace Foote, who hides secrets and scandal that belies her genteel façade. And Minder Evans, a civil war veteran who considers his cowardice his greatest sin. Finally, there's Essie Snowball, born Esther Schnable to conservative Jewish parents, but who now works as a prostitute and hides her child's parentage from all the world. Ultimately, each story serves as an allegory to the greater theme of the novel by echoing that fate, chance, and perhaps even divine providence, are all woven into the fabric of everyday life. And it's through each character's defining moment in his or her past that the reader understands how each child has become its parent's purpose for living. In the end, it's a novel of forgiveness, redemption, survival, faith and family.

Book excerpt: In 1936, Texas commemorated the 100th anniversary of its independence from Mexico with a series of statewide celebrations. A central exposition was proposed, with four cities waging a sometimes bitter campaign to secure the rights to stage this auspicious event. At stake for the host city was unparalleled national exposure and a strong economic boost in the midst of the Great Depression. Using the existing grounds and buildings at Fair Park as the basis of its bid, Dallas outhustled and outspent its competitors to be designated as the host city of the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition. The fair was planned by chief architect George Dahl with legions of talented designers and artists who collaborated to produce one of the great American world's fairs of the 1930s. In addition to the centennial celebration, 1936 marked the 50th anniversary of Fair Park as the site of the great State Fair of Texas. Many of the exhibition structures, livestock barns, and sports and performance venues built for the fair over the previous 50 years were incorporated into the new layout and design of the exposition. The architectural style that was applied to the old and new buildings at Fair Park was described as "Texanic," a combination of Texas iconography and classical motifs with the more spare, streamlined regimen of the moderne style. The result was a revelation to the millions of visitors that attended the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936.
