Download or read book Great Lakes Human Health Effects Research Program written by Barry L. Johnson and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990, Congress amended the Great Lakes (GL) Critical Programs Act, also known as the Fed. Water Pollution Control Act, mandating that the EPA and the ATSDR and the GL states submit a research report assessing the harmful human health effects of water pollutants in the GL basin. ATSDR developed the GL Health Effects Research Strategy to identify human populations residing in the GL basin that may be at greater risk of exposure to chemical contaminants, and to help prevent any adverse health effects. This report provides insight into ATSDR efforts to assess the adverse effects of water pollutants in the GL system on the health of people in the GL states.

Download or read book The Great Lakes Health Effects Program: written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes Health Effects Program is a federal initiative created in response to the 1987 amended protocol to the Revised Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement of 1978. The purpose of the Program is to protect human health from the effects of exposure to environmental contaminants in the Great Lakes Basin and to promote behavioural change that will foster sustainable health. This evaluation document addresses several questions about the performance of the Program that pertain to the scope & progress of the Program, the effectiveness with which it communicates with other government bodies & the general public, and the use that the Program makes of the Health Protection Branch's risk assessment & risk management model. Results of the evaluation are presented based on information from two main sources: structured interviews with federal employees associated with the Program and a review of pertinent documentation. Based on the findings, recommendations are made for improvements to the Program. A summary of interview topics & responses is appended.

Book excerpt: The Great Lakes Health Effects Program co-sponsored a workshop on March 1-3, 1994 in Aylmer, Québec to review the accomplishments of the first five years of the program. As part of completing the first five years, it was important to bring researchers together to examine research findings, to develop an updated view of the state of human health relative to environmental contaminants, and to plan future priorities for research and action. Included in this report are a workshop agenda, key conclusions from the workshop, suggested future research directions, a list of participants, and extended abstracts of the posters presented at the workshop.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a detailed review of the literature on contaminants, exposure, and health effects of those contaminants in the Great Lakes basin. The report is based on a series of papers prepared for the Great Lakes Health Effects Program, and is supplemented by additional data from related studies. After an introduction on health concerns in the basin and an overview of priority contaminants (organochlorines, metals, radionuclides, microbes, and airborne contaminants), further sections of the review cover the following topics: adverse health effects of persistent environmental contaminants in fish and wildlife; biomarkers for exposure and health effects; human exposure to chemical contaminants and their health effects; reproductive and developmental effects; neurotoxicity; immunotoxic effects; cancer incidence in the basin; health effects associated with radionuclides; Great Lakes water quality and effects associated with microbial contaminants; air quality and associated respiratory health effects; and overall conclusions.

Book Synopsis Report on the Great Lakes Anglers Pilot Exposure Assessment Study by : Jill Kearney
Download or read book Report on the Great Lakes Anglers Pilot Exposure Assessment Study written by Jill Kearney and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report was to compare the levels of various persistent pollutants in the blood and hair samples of people who ate sport fish with the levels of pollutants in the control group of people who did not eat sport fish. While the main focus of the study was on fish consumption, the study also looked at wildlife consumption. Some toxic chemicals of concern in sport fish and wildlife are persistent organochlorine chemicals such as PCBs, dioxins and furans and the pesticides DDT (and DDE), HCB and mirex. Another important contaminant is mercury, which is a heavy metal. Biomarkers (such as liver enzymes in blood), which may be early warning indicators of exposure to contaminants, were also measured. However, biomarkers can also reflect other health problems.

The activities described in this report support this mission and are consistent with achieving the health promotion and disease prevention objectives of Healthy People 2000, a national strategy put forth by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to significantly improve the health of the nation over the next decade. The ATSDR research program is designed to investigate and characterise the association between the consumption of contaminated Great Lakes fish and short- and long-term harmful health effects.

Download or read book Workshop on Planning Phase III Studies for the Great Lakes Health Effects Cohort Study written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes Health Effects Cohort Study is a multi-phase project to investigate the relationships between human exposure to contaminants found in the Great Lakes Basin through consumption of contaminated fish and wildlife and the risk of a variety of adverse health effects. Phase III of the study uses exposure assessment and epidemiologic studies to identify high-risk populations and to examine the relationship between exposure and specific health effects. This document gives an overview of the program and the cohort study; the objectives of the workshop; reports from each of the four discussion groups on exposure assessment, reproductive outcomes, childhood development, and immunological effects; and changes to the design of Phase II, which is an anglers survey used to identify those consuming large quantities of fish and wildlife through a brief questionnaire mailed to a stratified random sample of Ontario residents.
