Book excerpt: Indian religions , especially Hinduism , Jainism , Sikhism and Buddhism , the saintly man is revered as "truth-exemplary" for his knowledge of "self , truth and reality". In Sikhism it is used to describe human beings who have attained spiritual enlightenment and divine wisdom and power by uniting with God. A saint has an important place in the life of a devotee. The importance of a saint is also mentioned in Hindu scriptures. According to Hindu scriptures, by taking refuge in a true saint and performing devotional service according to the scriptures, the worshiper becomes free from the diseases of birth and death. The identity of a true saint has also been told in the holy scriptures of Hinduism that a true saint will have complete knowledge of all the holy scriptures and will take diksha three times in the name of three types of mantras. A saint , a theologian or a bhagat is any human being who has attained God and is in spiritual contact with God. Sikhs believe that the divine energy of God can be experienced by man on earth. This is achieved through constant chanting of the Lord's name (Naam Japo / Naam Simran) and spiritual introspection. Sikhs generally use reality as the name of God which cannot be merely mouthed but must be lived in truth. Saints can be of any religion. Individuals like Kabir , Ravidas , Namdev , Farid , Bhikkan and others are known as saints or bhagats , irrespective of their belonging to Islam or Hinduism . The divine knowledge is universal , and after attaining knowledge through Naam Simran their knowledge is compiled and included in the holy book of Sikhism , Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Saints are holy persons of the highest order , they are among the ideal human beings. Thus , Sikhs are encouraged to seek the company and pious company of saints (saadh- sangat) , learn from them , and attain "sainthood" through intense reading and meditation on the Sikh scriptures (gurbani) and Naam Simran. Do it. The virtuous life associated with a saint or Brahmagyani (one who has complete knowledge of God) is defined in Sikh Gurbani , specifically in the Sukhmani Sahib passage of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Sikhism advocates people of all faiths to unite by realizing God , and union with God is the highest form of spiritual enlightenment. Author David Smith defines guru as "a teacher , spiritual guide or deity". To receive the title of guru , one must undergo a standard initiation process known as initiation , in which they receive a mantra or sacred Sanskrit phrase. Hindu sages have often renounced the world and are called guru , sadhu , rishi , swami and other names. Many people consider the words "saint" and "saint" to be synonymous. This book is a list of religious figures of Hinduism , including gurus , saints , monks , yogis, and spiritual leaders.

Book excerpt: Indian Saints and Sages presents in short the celestial power, and miraculous and supernatural wonders by numerous Saints who were enlightened and brilliant persons with blissful souls. Their appearance was divine and the departure sublime. Most of them took SamĠdhi alive and in the presence of many; some entered the caves and never returned back, some changed into blazing light and some became flowers. The book tells how the God came to eat from the hands of devotees, played with them, listened to their discourses and hymns and fulfilled their simple, general, esoteric and extraordinary desires. This work describes wonderful and mind-boggling sacrifices. It shows and establishes that man is man only when he achieves distinction in all the four pursuits, PurushĠrth: Dharma, Artha, KĠma and Moksha. Kindness, Charity, Help, Contentment, and Sacrifices are the ways to Salvation, Freedom from the cycle of Birth and Death, and entry to Heavenly Abode. ‘Indian Saints and Sages’ shows the ways and means to all round prosperity, health, happiness, and full and complete living. It shows how to accumulate and spread Sweetness, Light, Delight and Fragrance, ensuring continuity to life and making the earth a better place to live and grow.

Book excerpt: Regional Sufi Centres in India: Significance and Contribution sets out to explore and understand the hundreds of years old multi-religious sect of India, "Sufism," which advocates humane and global outlook for entire mankind and regards humanity as a brotherhood. Sufism came to India from its Arabic Turkic and Persian homes, instead of remaining confined to palaces and mosques. It spread out to all over India establishing regional Centres and Dargahs often known by the surnames of the families which sustained it, like Khanqah-e-Niazia, in Bareilly (UP), Khanqah Gesu Daraz in Gulbarga, and Firdausi in Bihar. The authors of this volume discuss some of the regional Sufi Centres in India and their contribution in the social emancipation of the society. Book excerpt: A systematic presentation of the status of women of India throughout the long history of about 6000 years has been presented starting from the Vedic times to the post-independence period. A detailed description of the status of women during the Vedic times, which is rarely available in any of the existing literature, and in the following periods is very significant to the study of this subject. The author has discussed how the political and religious conditions over the periods have affected the conditions of women. The age-old evils, which had got firmly entrenched in the Indian society, such as the tradition of Sati, illiteracy, child marriages, and deplorable treatment of widows and so on, still persist and some new ones have joined the list. These are: bride burning, dowry, female feticide, domestic violence, to name a few. Short biographies of some outstanding women have been included to illustrate that in spite of adversities some women had achieved eminence. To the credit of the Indian Government, legislative measures have been taken to protect and improve the status of women after independence and just prior to it. These have been outlined. Unfortunately, these measures have not been able to achieve their intended results on account of wide spread corruption and lack of education and awareness among women, especially in the rural areas. A snapshot of the present conditions is given along with concluding remarks and recommendations for improvement. Improvement of the status of women is extremely improvement for India if it wishes to become a developed and progressive country and a world leader in culture and ideology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India, religion continues to be an absolutely vital source for social as well as personal identity. All manner of groups--political, occupational, and social--remain grounded in specific religious communities. This book analyzes the development of the modern Hindu and Sikh communities in North India starting from about the fifteenth century, when the dominant bhakti tradition of Hinduism became divided into two currents: the sagun and the nirgun. The sagun current, led mostly by Brahmins, has remained dominant in most of North India and has served as the ideological base of the development of modern Hindu nationalism. Several chapters explore the rise of this religious and political movement, paying particular attention to the role played by devotion to Ram. Alternative trends do exist in sagun tradition, however, and are represented here by chapters on the low-caste saint Chokhamel and the tantric sect founded by Kina Ram. The nirgun current, led mostly by persons of Ksand artisan castes, formed the base of both the Sikh community, founded by Guru Nanak, and of various non-Brahmin sectarian movements derived from such saints as Kabir, Raidas, Dadu, and Shiv Dayal Singh. Two chapters discuss the formation of a distinctive Sikh theology and a Sikh community identity separate from that of the Hindus. Other chapters discuss the validity of the sagun-nirgun distinction within Hindu tradition and the interplay of social and religious ideas in nirgun hagiographic texts and in sectarian movements such as the Adi Dharma Mission and the Radhasoami Satsang.
