Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great French Painters: And the Evolution of French Painting From 1830 to the Present Day Ome explanation will be necessary to justify the composition of this book. Its programme is vast; it is to compress into a rapid sketch seventy years that have given to the French School some of its greatest masters and an imposing number of artists of high merit. In what spirit, in what order are we to consider them? This, for the sake of clearness, had better be defined at the outset. CHAPTER III THE REALISTS AND THE CHARACTERISTS The realist ideas derived from the influence of Delacroix.--Gust iw Courbst anJ the movement of protest against the ideas of Ingres and the School.--Edouard Manet and the transformation of realism into the investigation of modern character.--The idea of the beauty of expression begins to oppose that of the beaulv of form.--Manet's influence creates the style of modern illustration, after Daumier, Gavarni and Guys.--Degas and characterism.--Raffaelli, Forain.--Bastien-Lepage and minute realism.--The modern painters: Roll, Ribot, Lautrec, etc. OU take the lead in the decrepitude of your art," wrote Baude laire to Manet. This decrepitude the great poet applied to the academic style of Ingres's pupils, while they in turn applied it to the romantic and realistic daring of Delacroix's pupils. Ingres and Delacroix, reconciled to-day in our admiration, were then the protagonists of that old and eternal struggle between the ancient and the modern, the adherents of Gluck and of Piccini. The genius of the one was used as a pretext for denying that of the other, with all the injustice inherent in periods of feverish artistic activity. However, one of the first consequences of Delacroix was the establishment, together with romanticism, of a recrudescence of realism. A historical and orientalist painter, a painter of modern tragedy, Delacroix was also, quite apart from his gifts as decorator and lyricist, an intense realist, and, like all the greatest artists, gave expression to the heroism and the dramatic side of broad, but scrupulous observation of truth. While certain painters cling to his romanticism and to his composition, others cling particularly to his bold qualities of truthfulness, and...

Book excerpt: In the years between 1830 and 1848, the period know as the July Monarchy, French art underwent the major transformation from romanticism to realism. Yet, because of their transitional nature, the works of this period have often been ignored by art historians. By avoiding a concentration on either a single artist or a single ism, the book illuminates this 18 year period.

Book excerpt: Although mastery of the representation of the human figure was central to art making as early as the fifteenth century in Europe, in the nineteenth-century French imagination the artist's model became identified as a distinct social type and cultural trope. This study of the artist's model in Paris between 1830 and 1870 incorporates three histories: a social history of professional models, a cultural history of models as social types, and an art history of representations of the model in elite and popular visual culture. It takes as its starting point the artist-model transaction: demonstrating that stereotypes of 'the model' that figured in the public imagination were framed both by gender and ethnicity, the book develops a nuanced typology of different types of models. Interwoven with the analysis of the constructed identities of models are accounts of the lives of particular models and the histories of the urban population groups from which they emerged. The Invention of the Model: Artists and Models in Paris, 1830-1870 is an adept exploration of a major issue in nineteenth-century art which will be of interest not only to art historians, but also to social and French cultural historians.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Painting: From Its Earliest to Its Latest Practice, Including an Account of the French Academy of Painting, Its Salons Schools of Instruction of Instruction and Regulations; With Reproductions of Sixteen Representative Paintings A word in defence of lists, in appearance so sterile, in fact so fer tile of information. A list of an artist's works, with dates, often times is evidence of his growth in art and life, an account of what he was and is, an implication of what he is not. They, therefore, are a concise method of giving much, especially if well based on prelimi nary sketches or discriminated classification. Greater space, then would have led to more and fuller lists. The thinking world is becoming more and more fond of drawing its own inferences from pure facts. An age that strenuously demands details in its art equally requires details of its art. Since it is a well-known fact that many artists of France, who have never won an honor at the Salons, are nevertheless rewarded by an exalted public estimate, the rank is apparent of even the least of those mentioned in the lists under the various classes, all of whom have been medalled, most to the degree of being Hors Concours, some of whom have been members of the Institute, and an occasional one a Minister of the Fine Arts. And not the least service of these statistics is their demonstration of the great wealth of French painting.
