Those which lack this characteristic, however laudable may be their design, and however able, accurate, and minute their execution, cannot be generally useful, be cause the mass of readers will not read them through. They may buy them from a sense of duty, because they are said to be goool books, they may place them on a shelf and make a resolute attempt to read them occa sionally; but if the books are dry and repulsive, they are laid aside after the perusal of a few pages, and when repeated attempts to accomplish the heavy task have failed, the undertaking 1s given up in despair. The volume is spoken of with great respect, and permitted to enjoy a dignified repose on the upper shelf. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Great Events in History, Vol. 2 Patriotism, or love of country, is one of the tests of nobility of character. No great man ever lived that was not a patriot in the highest and truest sense. From the earliest times, the sentiment of patriotism has been aroused in the hearts of men by the narrative of heroic deeds inspired by love of country and love of liberty. This truth furnishes the key to the arrangement and method of the present work. The ten epochs treated are those that have been potential in shaping subsequent events, and when men have struck blows for human liberty against odds and regardless of personal consequences. The simple narrative carries its own morals, and the most profitable work for the teacher will be to merely supplement the narrative so that the picture presented shall be all the more vivid. Moral reflections are wearisome and superfluous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Times and the Living Past To present the history of the world in a single volume and to make the story at the same time attractive and useful to young readers is a most difficult task. Only the general sweep of the great current of events can be followed; only the salient features that contributed most to the development of the nations can be included. The two questions that must constantly be in the mind of the writer are, first, what to choose for the text, and second, how to present it. As to the first, he must be able to appraise historic values; he must present that which will lead the reader to visual ize the past so as best to grasp the problems that contributed most to the social, moral, economic, and political development of the peoples whom he is studying. Thus by acquiring a correct knowledge of his historical inheritance, the reader will understand and appreciate the principles on which are based the ideals and institutions of the civilization of the present. As to the second, the method of presenting history, especially for young readers, these facts must be borne in mind: The great majority of high-school pupils will never become specialists in history. Intensive scientific study from the sources is therefore out of place in the secondary schools, except for an occasional diversion. It is recommended that classes be led to dip now and then into the source fountains; but if confined to this form of study, pupils will leave school with no knowledge of the great march of human events, and with little or no interest to continue the study in the future. Moreover, they will miss the culture and the intense interest that pertains to the great human story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The divisions of the subject are few, and the narrative as simple and direct as so extensive a plan would by any means permit. Leading characters and events are dwelt upon according to the author's estimate of their relative importance, and others are necessarily passed over with, comparatively, slight notice. But little Space has been afforded to the history of our own country, from the conviction that this course would be most acceptable to intelligent readers, familiar as they are with all the great events of American history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Important Events: A Book of Dates, Historical, Biographical, Political, Religious, Literary, Scientific, and Industrial This book is a compilation intended for the use of the general reader. In condensing the recorded history of years within the limits deemed de sirable, many events are necessarily emitted which might be considered of equal importance with those selected. This is unavoidable. No attempt has been made to compete with the many-volumed encyclopedias and works of historical reference from which the materials for this work have been derived. It has been the aim of the compiler rather to present a thread of history running through the careers of the nations which have played a more or less important part in human affairs, that may assist the reader of current news and literature in better understanding the present by a glance at the past. More than one-half of the space has been devoted to the continent of America, the larger portion to ad'airs in the United States. The minor States of America, North and South, have received comparatively more atten tion than their relative importance in the world's history would suggest; but the rapidly growing political, commercial, and social intercourse of our own country with these peoples, and our. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Events, Vol. 13: By Famous Historians The elder Louis had realized something of the error of his own career and had left as his last advice to his successor, to abstain from war. We are told that the obedient legatee accepted the caution as his motto, and had it hung upon his bedroom wall, where it served him as an excellent excuse for doing nothing at all. His government was notoriously in the hands of his mis tresses, Pompadour and the others, and their misrule was to the full as costly to France as the wars of the preceding age. They drained the country quite as deeply of its resources and renown; they angered and insulted it far more. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Events, Vol. 6: By Famous Historians It was during the period of about one hundred fifty years, extending from the middle of the twelfth to the close of the thirteenth century, that the features of our modem civilization began to assume a recognizable form. The age was characterized by the decline of feudalism, and by the growth of all the new influences which combined to create a new state of society. With the decay of the great lords came the rise of the great cities, the increased power and importance of the middle classes, the burghers or "citizens," who dominate the world to-day. In opposition to these there came also an unforeseen accession of strength to kings. The boundaries of modem states grew more clearly defined; modem nationalities were distinctly established; Europe assumed something of the outline, something of the social character, which she still retains. The period includes not only the culmination and close of the crusading fervor, but also, coincident with this, the culmination of both the religious and the temporal powers of the popes, and the scarce recognized beginning of their decline. Universities, vaguely existent before, now increase rapidly in numbers and importance, receive definite outlines and foundations, and exert a mighty influence. In fact it has been not inaptly said that the rule of mediaeval Europe was divided amid three powers - the emperor, the pope, and the University of Paris. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Events, Vol. 5: By Famous Historians The three centuries which follow the downfall of the empire of Charlemagne laid the foundations of modern Europe, and made of it a world wholly different, politically, socially, and religiously, from that which had preceded it. In the careers of Greece and Rome we saw exemplified the results of two sharply opposing tendencies of the Aryan mind, the one toward individualism and separation, the other toward self-subordination and union. In the time of Charlemagne's splendid successes it appeared settled that the second of these tendencies was to guide the Teutonic Aryans, that the Europe of the future was to be a single empire, ever pushing out its borders as Rome had done, ever subduing its weaker neighbors, until the "Teutonic peace" should be substituted for the shattered "Roman peace," soldiers should be needed only for the duties of police, and a whole civilized world again obey the rule of a single man. Instead of this, the race has since followed a destiny of separation. Europe is divided into many countries, each of them a vast camp bristling with armies and arsenals.
