Book excerpt: 'Colomer's book is a stimulating read, certainly for anyone willing to entertain nonconventional observations that hold up well in what is happening in the world. His most important argument is that global public services, such as security, a trading system, an international monetary regime, and communication networks provided by large democratic entities such as the United States and the European Union provide opportunities for small countries and regions to prosper. The successful smaller units – like Ireland or Catalonia – trade more in proportion to their economies than large ones, are generally more democratic, and have more multilingual populations. I expect this book to be widely read and greatly admired.’ – Sidney Weintraub, William E. Simon Chair in Political Economy, Centre for Strategic and International Studies, Washington DC, USA

Churchill In 1917, two empires that had dominated much of Europe and Asia teetered on the edge of the abyss, exhausted by the ruinous cost in blood and treasure of the First World War. As Imperial Russia and Habsburg-ruled Austria-Hungary began to succumb, a small group of Czech and Slovak combat veterans stranded in Siberia saw an opportunity to realize their long-held dream of independence. While their plan was audacious and complex, and involved moving their 50,000-strong army by land and sea across three-quarters of the earth's expanse, their commitment to fight for the Allies on the Western Front riveted the attention of Allied London, Paris, and Washington. On their journey across Siberia, a brawl erupted at a remote Trans-Siberian rail station that sparked a wholesale rebellion. The marauding Czecho-Slovak Legion seized control of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, and with it Siberia. In the end, this small band of POWs and deserters, whose strength was seen by Leon Trotsky as the chief threat to Soviet rule, helped destroy the Austro-Hungarian Empire and found Czecho-Slovakia. British prime minister David Lloyd George called their adventure "one of the greatest epics of history," and former US president Teddy Roosevelt declared that their accomplishments were "unparalleled, so far as I know, in ancient or modern warfare."

Book excerpt: This edited volume examines the experience of World War I of small nations, defined here in terms of their relative weakness vis-à-vis the major actors in European diplomacy, and colonial peripheries, encompassing areas that were subject to colonial rule by European empires and thus located far from the heartland of these empires. The chapters address subject nations within Europe, such as Ireland and Poland; neutral states, such as Sweden and Spain; and overseas colonies like Tunisia, Algeria and German East Africa. By combining analyses of both European and extra-European experiences of war, this collection of essays provides a unique comparative perspective on World War I and points the way towards an integrated history of small nations and colonial peripheries. Contributors are Steven Balbirnie, Gearóid Barry, Jens Boysen, Ingrid Brühwiler, William Buck, AUde Chanson, Enrico Dal Lago, Matias Gardin, Richard Gow, Florian Grafl, Dónal Hassett, Guido Hausmann, Róisín Healy, Conor Morrissey, Michael Neiberg, David Noack, Chris Rominger, Danielle Ross and Christine Strotmann.

Book excerpt: In the eleven years that separated the Declaration of the Independence of the United States from the completion of that act in the ordination of our written Constitution, the great minds of America were bent upon the study of the principles of government that were essential to the preservation of the liberties which had been won at great cost and with heroic labors and sacrifices. Their studies were conducted in view of the imperfections that experience had developed in the government of the Confederation, and they were, therefore, practical and thorough. -Introduction

Book excerpt: Democracy in America' is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville that describes the massive societal changes sweeping across his contemporary world. He believed that such developments had transpired over the previous seven hundred years, all moving towards a more democratic system. This text outlines his ideas about how the socio-economic conditions of men were becoming more egalitarian, the origins and causes of which he believed to be intrinsic in factors such as the ability of all men to enter the clergy, and increasing opportunities in trade and commerce. An engaging and comprehensive analysis pertaining to the evolution of democracy, this two-part classic is a necessary addition to every socio-economic compendium. Alexis de Tocqueville was a French political thinker and historian best known for 'Democracy in America' and 'The Old Regime and the Revolution' (1856). He was active in French politics and retired from his political career after Louis Napoléon Bonaparte's 1851 coup. This edition has been republished with a new introductory biography of the author.

Book excerpt: Reader, in this volume we compiled the most outstanding works of the famed writer Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859). A historian and statesman, de Tocqueville’s foundational work, Democracy in America (1835, 1840) featured an educated, novel analysis of the state-political structure and spiritual life of the United States of America. The book uses a complex fusion of travel notes, research, philosophical essays, and journalism to describe the birth of the American Nation, which literally transformed before his eyes from a frontier on the “edge of civilization” to a New World power impacting European politics. His 1856 book, The Old Regime and the Revolution, examined the period of the French Revolution. In trying to flesh out its origins, de Tocqueville found that the old order that existed prior to the revolution had been all but forgotten. He had to delve into the archives and reconstruct the image of “old” France. Without a proper understanding of the interplay between the aristocrats and bourgeois, it was impossible to explain why the Revolution took place and why it played out as it did. His book not only shed light on the French revolution, it also created a new scientific method for studying the origins and character of a revolt. Book excerpt: With emphasis on East Asian and North American examples – notably Japan and Quebec – Date, Laniel and their contributors take a new approach to the understanding of small nations and their role in the international system. Small nations, by their very nature, raise significant questions about what a nation is. Some small nations are sovereign states with relatively small populations and limited territory, others are nations within larger sovereign states, with distinctive cultures, governance structures or other features that differentiate them from their “parent” state. By focussing on non-European nations in particular, the contributors to this volume challenge our conceptions of what a small nation is and how it operates within the international system. They focus in particular on the nation-within-a-nation-state of Quebec and on Japan, supplemented by further examples from East Asia. By interrogating what these examples have to show us about the typology and character of small nations, they offer a critique of superpower and draw out the potential of small nation studies. A valuable resource for students and scholars of international relations and theories of the nation and nation state.
