Book excerpt: At some point in their careers, virtually every scientist and technician, as well as many medical professionals, regardless of their area of specialization have a need to utilize cell culture systems. Updating and significantly expanding upon the previous editions, Basic Cell Culture Protocols, Fourth Edition provides the novice cell culturist with sufficient information to perform the basic techniques, to ensure the health and identity of their cell lines, and to be able to isolate and culture specialized primary cell types. The intent of this extensive volume is to generate a valuable resource containing clear methodologies pertinent to current areas of investigation, rather than attempting to educate cell culturists on specific cell types or organ systems. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Comprehensive and up-to-date, Basic Cell Culture Protocols, Fourth Edition compiles the essential techniques needed to approach this vital laboratory activity with full success.
Book Synopsis Families and Food in Hard Times by : Rebecca O’Connell
Download or read book Families and Food in Hard Times written by Rebecca O’Connell and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food is fundamental to health and social participation, yet food poverty has increased in the global North. Adopting a realist ontology and taking a comparative case approach, Families and Food in Hard Times addresses the global problem of economic retrenchment and how those most affected are those with the least resources. Based on research carried out with low-income families with children aged 11-15, this timely book examines food poverty in the UK, Portugal and Norway in the decade following the 2008 financial crisis. It examines the resources to which families have access in relation to public policies, local institutions and kinship and friendship networks, and how they intersect. Through ‘thick description’ of families’ everyday lives, it explores the ways in which low income impacts upon practices of household food provisioning, the types of formal and informal support on which families draw to get by, the provision and role of school meals in children’s lives, and the constraints upon families’ social participation involving food. Providing extensive and intensive knowledge concerning the conditions and experiences of low-income parents as they endeavour to feed their families, as well as children’s perspectives of food and eating in the context of low income, the book also draws on the European social science literature on food and families to shed light on the causes and consequences of food poverty in austerity Europe.

Book excerpt: Teacher is part diary, part inspired description of Ashton-Warner's teaching method in action. Her fiercely loved children come alive individually, as do the unique setting and the character of this extraordinary woman. Ashton-Warner devised a method whereby written words became prized possessions for her students. Today, her findings are strikingly relevant to the teaching of socially disadvantaged and non-English-speaking students.
Book Synopsis Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis by : M.M. Avram
Download or read book Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis written by M.M. Avram and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth International Congress of Peritoneal Dialysis was held in Venice, Italy, June 29 to July 2, 1987. By this time peritoneal dialysis had emerged as a treatment for a substantial fraction of patients with end-stage renal disease and countless numbers of patients with acute renal failure. This treatment is now practiced worldwide and is the life-sustaining treatment for about 40,000 patients with chronic renal failure, representing 15 to 20% of dialysis therapy in about 1000 centers. It is not surprising, therefore, that the number of health professionals engaged in the investigation and the application of the treatment has also grown exponen tially. The First International Symposium on Peritoneal Dialysis, organized by Dr. A. Treviiio-Be cerra in Chapala, Mexico, in 1978, brought together a group of pioneers when continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis was in its infancy. In 1981, Dr. G. M. Gahl chaired the Second Symposium, in West Berlin, when the technique and professional interest were growing con siderably. By 1984, when Dr. 1. F. Winchester and I organized the Third Symposium, the pre sented papers exceeded 100 and there were about 1000 attendees. At that time, it was deemed appropriate to form a more organized group and the International Society for Peritoneal Dialy sis was founded. One of the first actions of the Society was to choose from among several applicants Dr.

Book Synopsis Bronchiectasis by : James D. Chalmers
Download or read book Bronchiectasis written by James D. Chalmers and published by European Respiratory Society. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bronchiectasis is a hot topic in respiratory medicine, attracting an increasing amount of interest from clinicians, scientists, physiotherapists and the pharmaceutical industry. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the disease in terms of the research performed, clinical management, classification and patient treatment. The disease is also very complex because it can be caused by multiple underlying disorders, meaning its clinical presentation is highly diverse. This Monograph will tackle these issues by providing a series of chapters from recognised world experts covering: clinical management, service delivery, pathophysiology, microbiology and underlying disorders. The book also addresses the challenges faced in clinical trials and the need for drug development, and presents a number of clinical cases designed to aid learning. The Bronchiectasis Monograph substantially integrates the 2017 ERS guidelines on management of these patients. It is an essential reference for anyone caring for bronchiectasis patients or engaged in bronchiectasis research.
