Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sailing Ships: The Story of Their Development From the Earliest Times to the Present Day I trust that both the yachtsman and sailorman will find in these pages something of the same exciting pleasure which has been mine in tracing the course of the evolutions through which their ships have passed. Those whose work or amusement it is to acquaint themselves with the sailing ship and her ways, and for lack of time and Opportunity are unable to seek out the noble pedigree of what Ruskin truly described as one of the loveliest things man ever made, and one of the noblest, may care to learn what were the changing conditions which combined to bring about such a highly complex creature as the modern sailing ship. Perhaps at some time when handling a rope, a spar, a tiller or a sail, they may have won dered how it all began; what were the origins of all those various parts of a ships furniture why some essential portions have scarcely changed; and how other portions are the outcome of time. Experiment, and science. I hope that to neither the amateur nor the professional sailor I shall seem impertinent if I have attempted to tell them something about their ship which they did not know before. But if, on the other hand, I shall have succeeded in increasing their love for the sailing-ship by outlining her career, I trust that this may be allowed to counterbalance the defects which, in a subject of so vast a scope, are hardly to be avoided in spite of considerable care and the generous assistance of many kind friends. Finally, I make my appeal to the younger generation, to whom ships and the sea have in all times suggested so much that is bound up with adventure and brave deeds. The present moment sees us at a stage in the history of ships when the Royal Navy as a whole, and the Merchant Service almost entirely, have no longer any convenience for sail. There is a dire need in the latter for both officers and men, whilst on shore the conditions of employment are exactly the reverse. Book Synopsis The Book of the Sailboat by : A. Hyatt Verrill
Download or read book The Book of the Sailboat written by A. Hyatt Verrill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Sailboat: How to Rig, Sail and Handle Small Boats In the South Seas and other places the natives still use catamarans and proas which are really nothing but two logs fastened together, and yet the most efficient and safest of life rafts used by our greatest steam ships are merely modifications of these same cata marans. The purpose of any boat is to float and support its occupants while traveling across the water, and while it seems a far cry from the coracle or the dugout to a palatial steamship or a stately, four-masted, sailing ship, yet the principle of each is identical and each serves the purpose for which it was designed equally well; it is merely a matter of improvement, and many of the terms and names Of parts which were used by the earliest sailors are still retained on our greatest liners and largest sailing vessels. Book Synopsis The Golden Age of Sail by : David Ross
Download or read book The Golden Age of Sail written by David Ross and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first capital ships were intended as flagships - conspicuous in their size, flying the banner of an admiral, and acting as a lead vessel to a fleet of smaller craft. But by the end of the 16th century, their value as fighting machines encouraged the maritime countries of Europe to build more big warships. What followed was three centuries of big-gun sailing warships, before steam power took over. The Golden Age of Sail selects the best of these vessels, from Henry Grace a Dieu, launched in 1514, through to the 19th century ironclad steam-and-sail ships, such as HMS Alexandra and Knig Wilhelm. The book devotes a spread to each featured vessel, with expert text putting each ship into its historical, military and naval context. Throughout specifications are provided for each ship, with feature boxes outlining development and annotations pointing out particular details. Unique graphics allow the reader to compare specific features. Featuring spectacular color profile artworks, The Golden Age of Sail is a superb celebration of 100 ships from 400 years of nautical history.
Book Synopsis The Book of Old Ships by : Henry B. Culver
Download or read book The Book of Old Ships written by Henry B. Culver and published by Dover Publications. This book was released on 1992-11-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the ships human beings have constructed to navigate the waters of the world — from a hollowed-out log sharpened at both ends to modern ocean liners weighing thousands of tons — those powered by the wind are among the most interesting and beautiful. In this classic review, noted maritime artist Gordon Grant has created 80 magnificent line illustrations of some of history's most important sailing ships, beginning with a graceful Egyptian galley (c. 1600 B.C.) and ending with a splendid five-masted clipper ship of 1921. Also depicted are a Roman trireme, a Viking longship, a sixteenth-century caravel, an East Indiaman of 1750, an early nineteenth-century brigantine, a New Bedford whaling bark, and dozens of lesser-known vessels, among them the galleass, carrack, buss, and flute. Henry B. Culver, well-known authority on naval history, has provided a detailed, meticulously researched text for each vessel, describing the materials and details of construction, how the ship's design matched its function, the period in which the vessel flourished, romance and lore surrounding the craft, and more. Naval historians and model shipbuilders will value this work as an excellent sourcebook and reference with much information on the evolution of sailing vessels, the origins of shipping, customs of the sea and other pertinent matters; sailing enthusiasts will find it a wonderful browsing book, offering an informative, handsomely illustrated look back at 3,000 years of sailing history.
Book Synopsis The Line of Battle by : Robert Gardiner
Download or read book The Line of Battle written by Robert Gardiner and published by Conway Maritime Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although purpose built fighting ships had existed earlier, the principal characteristics of the classic sailing warship were defined in the mid-seventeenth century, and the line of battle ship became ever more distinct. Alongside came the greater specialisation of the fleets and the evolution of the frigate and the adaptation of myriad types of craft for naval use. The story of these developments is clearly elucidated in this paperback volume.
