Doebner, Archivist of State, &c., for having, by the information which he was kind enough to transmit to me, enabled me to explain the actual working of the Hanoverian system of government, more especially as to the relations between the territorial sovereign and the higher ministerial authorities. These lectures had been written, and in the fifth of the series I had already largely availed myself of the researches of M. Richard Waddington in his Lam's X V et le Renversement des Alliances (i 7 54 when he was so courteous as to allow me to peruse the proof-sheets of the chapter on Kloster Zeven in his forthcoming continuation of his important political narrative. I was thus enabled to rewrite so much of my sixth lecture as refers to the Capitu lation and its reception in England, although I have not yet had the satisfaction of reading the remainder of the expected volume. Where he has varied from the earlier hif tories, he has not merely referred to but quoted his authorities which are chiefly Sir John Dalrymple and Mr. Maherfon; to whom the Public owe great obligation for their interefiing and important commu nications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alliance of Hanover: A Study of British Foreign Policy in the Last Years of George I The four years preceding the treaties of Vienna were years of calm in Europe. In the south, in 1721, Great Britain, France and Spain had made alliance under their treaty of Madrid of June, conspiring to force on Austria fulfilment of the conditions of the Quadruple Alliance, While in the north, in September, Peter the Great had concluded his Baltic work at Nystad. True, that during the remainder of his life he continued to keep Denmark and Hanover in affright, but his real attention he turned to new conquests on the Caspian. These were the years of the congress of Cambray, the actual business of which was transacted, until 1724, not there, but by interminable correspondence among the chanceries of the courts concerned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England of the House of Hanover, Vol. 1 The guest of Polycrates, who ran away from his host because he was for ever fortunate, was like one of those critics, of the Jeremy Collier school, who cannot witness a modest success without, to speak metaphorically, trying to slit the nose of the author. For my own part, I have little reason to complain; my task is rather to be grateful, and I take the opportunity of the appearance of a second edition of my anecdotical sketches, to give expression to such gratitude, with all the heartiness which the public patronage deserves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First George in Hanover and England, Vol. 2 of 2 Even Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, who wrote him down blockhead, was constrained to add that he was an honest blockhead. Honest he was according to his lights, and loyal, too It is the rule and maxim of my family to reward their friends, do justice to their enemies, and fear none but God, 1 he declared not long after he landed in England and of deviation from this rule and maxim he was never accused even by his bitterest detractors. Indeed, the rewards he bestowed upon his servants formed the basis of complaints made against him. To his enemies, indeed, he was more than just, for he tempered justice with mercy, and not infrequently with generosity. When the Earl of Nithsdale made his escape from prison on the night before he was executed, the deputy-lieutenant of the Tower hastened to St. James's Palace to inform the King and to vindicate himself from any suspicion of negligence or treachery. George was entertaining a party of the nobility, but when he heard of this visitor, he had him brought in. The deputy-lieutenant began by saying that he had ill news to impart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England Under the House of Hanover, Vol. 1 of 2: Its History and Condition During the Reigns of the Three Georges, Illustrated From the Caricatures and Satires of the Day The application of song, and satire, and picture, to politics, is a thing of no modern date; for we trace it more or less among every people with whose history we have much acquaintance. Caricatures and songs have been found in Egyptian tombs. The song and the lampoon were the constant attendants on, and incentives in, those incessant political struggles which, during the middle ages, were preparing for the formation of modern society; and many an old manuscript and sculptured block, whether of wood or stone, show that our forefathers in the middle ages understood well the permanent force of pictorial satire. But it is more especially in religious matters that the middle ages, like antiquity, have shown a full perception of the importance of appealing through the eye to the hearts of the masses. In the rapid and temporary movements of political strife, this weapon could not be adopted with much effect until after the invention of printing, when, by a quick process, pictures engraved could be multiplied indefinitely. Many of the subjects treated in it were intended to find a place in other volumes. But in the course of writing such other volumes room was not spared for them, and those who managed the series after my departure from England thought that this volume was needed to supply a gap. It is a continuation of my Epoch called 'the Age of Anne.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of England of the House of Hanover, Vol. 2 of 3 The queen's influence was ever stronger than the favourite's credit. Except a barony, a red riband, and a good place for her brother, Sir John Hobart, Earl of Buckinghamshire, Lady Suffolk could succeed but in very subordinate recommendations. Her own acquisitions were so moderate, that, besides Marble Hill, which cost the king ten or twelve thousand pounds, her complaisance had not been too dearly purchased. She left the court with an income so little to be envied, that though an economist, and not expensive, by the lapse of some annuities on lives not so prolonged as her own, she found herself strait ened, and, besides Marble Hill, did not at most leave twenty thousand pounds to her family. On quitting court, she married Mr. George Berkeley, and outlived him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
