Book excerpt: Bill 'Swampy' Marsh has been on yet another adventure, this time gathering more stories from outback towns and pubs; from the green fields of Tasmania to the vast red sands of Simpson Desert. The unique characters of the outback will touch your heart as Swampy presents all the drama and delight of life in remote Australia. There are tales of all-night revelry, the pub that became a refuge during a bushfire, the thirteen-year-old sent from the city to work on a remote sheep station, the priest with a sideline in illegal poker games, a sighting of the elusive yowie, a murder or two and a few ghosts thrown in for good measure. And, yes, the saddest story of all - the pub with no beer. If there's a good story out there, Swampy has captured it in this book. Bill 'Swampy' Marsh is an award-winning writer and performer of stories, songs and plays. He spent most of his youth in rural south-western NSW and now lives on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsular. Swampy is one of ABC Books' bestselling authors of Australian stories; this is his twenty-third book.

Book excerpt: A collection of the funniest yarns and most colourful characters from the bestselling 'Great Australian Stories' series from beloved storyteller Bill 'Swampy' Marsh. When he'd finished playing, a solemn silence fell as Brian and the gravediggers stared down into that three-quarter-filled hole. 'I must apologise,' Brian said to the two men, 'this's the first time I've played at a pauper's funeral, and I'm a bit emotional.' 'Well,' said one of the diggers, sniffling back the tears, 'it's the first time we've ever had a piper play at one of our septic tank installations.' The Australian Outback can be harsh, but it's the kind of place where you either learn to laugh off your troubles or fold under the pressure. Bill 'Swampy' Marsh has a deep affection and respect for people living in the Australian Bush, and he's spent more than twenty years travelling to every corner of our wide brown land, talking to people from all walks of life, collecting their memories and stories. Great Australian Outback Yarns captures the funniest tales from Swampy's many books in one volume. The colourful characters in these pages are full of generosity, humour and a larrikin Aussie spirit. These true stories of life in remote and regional Australia from Australia's master storyteller will leave you grinning from ear to ear. Bill 'Swampy' Marsh is an award-winning writer and performer of stories, songs and plays. He spent most of his youth in rural south-western NSW and now lives in Adelaide. Book excerpt: Great Australian stories of faith and friendship in outback Australia, gathered by the inimitable Bill 'Swampy' Marsh - bestselling author of Great Australian Flying Doctor Stories and Great Australian CWA Stories. 'the term "Bible bashing" took on new meaning in our household ... Mum used to suffer from bunions; that is until she started bashing them with the heavy family Bible, believing the Lord's weight behind the Lord's word could move anything from mountains to bunions.' Priests, pastors and preachers play a vital part in the lives of people in remote and regional Australia. Often from the city, they are posted to places they have never even heard of to provide spiritual care for communities over areas larger than they could ever imagine. No matter their religion, they are all committed to helping people in the bush - whatever way they can! they shear sheep, put up fences, travel hundreds of kilometres to visit their parishioners, act as counsellors, set up schools and programs, and advocate for Aboriginal and asylum seeker rights. Bill 'Swampy' Marsh has travelled Australia gathering first-hand these memories and yarns to bring together this wonderful collection of seventy stories that so perfectly capture life in the bush. From hilariously irreverent tales of misadventure to reflections on what it means to have faith, these stories serve as a reminder that wherever in this country we may live, and whatever our beliefs may be, a helping hand and sympathetic ear are never far away. Bill 'Swampy' Marsh is an award-winning writer and performer of stories, songs and plays. He spent most of his youth in rural south-western NSW and now lives in Adelaide. this is his thirteenth book.

In this school we always use our best manners when we talk to teachers and adults. Book excerpt: Nuet Livingstone took great delight in entertaining travelers in the bar of the Ironclad Hotel in the tiny gold mining town of Marble Bar. Marble Bar was renowned as the hottest place in Australia and in the bar of the local was the coolest place one could quench their thirst. Nuet's favorite trick was to eat a green frog. Then for an encore eat three or four cockroaches.Entertainment was self-made in the past before television reached the outback. Roads were mainly dirt tracks and when travelers reached a small settlement they would gather at the local hotel. Have a few drinks and yarn with the locals. Storytelling, news and gossip were all by word of mouth. An art now nearly forgotten. Larrikins like Neut were a dime a dozen and in most paces there would always be one who loved playing tricks on the unwary. It was a talking point to pass on at a meeting or gathering whether it be with friends or strangers. A good yarn broke the ice and then one could indulge in the art of communication. This art now near non-existent.Outback roads are now long stretches of bitumen and cars zoom along at a great rate. A time gone past these roads were dirt and you never drove past if anyone was stopped on the road. You always pulled over to inquire if they were OK. Many a traveller had perished in the past. It was sort of an unwritten law to check on fellow travellers. Not so now.The old-timers who once travelled these roads are now gone as well as their stories with it. In this book, I've gathered up some of those stories as well as my own experiences to let the next generation know of the life that we once lived. We all took it in our stride and made do. I don't think any of us made great fortunes but we were all richer for our experiences, in heart and mind.

FROM SOME OF THE BIGGEST BEATS IN THE WORLD COME THESE UNFORGETTABLE TALES OF ADVENTURE AND MISADVENTURE, DRAMA AND MAYHEM, LARRIKINISM AND LAUGHTER. After there'd been a robbery in a block of Wiluna retirement units, two police officers arrive to begin their investigations. They knock on the front door of the first unit in the block. An old lady answers. 'Lady,' says one of the police officers, 'where were you between 5 and 6?' 'I'm not exactly sure, officer,' replies the old lady, 'but I was most probably in kindergarten.' Australia's outback police have seen it all: natural disasters, incredible acts of selflessness, unspeakable crimes and daring rescues, to name just a few. And they've met some unforgettable characters along the way. This memorable and eye-opening collection of real-life accounts from cops on the frontline in the heart of Australia is by turns inspiring, poignant, heartbreaking and hilarious. Book excerpt: For a town with seventy residents (on a good day), Birdsville is remarkably well known the Birdsville Track, the rodeo, the pub, the infamous races. With its ruggedness, inaccessibility and larrikin charm, this small town on the edge of the Simpson Desert has become a symbol of the great Australian outback. What is it about Birdsville that has made it stand so large in our legends? And what's it like to live there amongst the floods and the heat and the dust storms? To find out, Evan McHugh packed up his Sydney home, bought a four-wheel drive and headed off with his wife for a year in the back of beyond. Here, he tells us of the large adventures midnight desert rescues, aerial mustering on vast cattle stations, relentless heat and massive floods but also the small details of life in one of Australia's most isolated towns like driving 700 kilometres to go shopping. As the month fly by, Evan learns about an ancient culture, sees dunes carpeted in millions of tiny wildflowers, and meets the members of an outback community facing extraordinary challenges with quiet determination and buckets of good humour. Birdsville is about breathtaking beauty and harshness of this country, the generosity of its salt-of-the-earth people, and one man's discovery of his own reserves of courage and resilience. 'McHugh is a clever mixture of curious outsider and eager participant... Written in a simple but elegant style where honesty and thoughtfulness build an accurate picture of the richness of life in one of Australia's most famous outback towns.' The Age

Book excerpt: The historic Daly Waters Pub is in the middle of a 1,000,000 acre cattle station, with the nearest neighbours a six-pack of beer drive away. In between the neighbours and the constant wave of Territory tourists is the famous pub.In the mid-1980's I quit my surveying career to purchase the Daly Waters Pub in the Northern Territory. It became an adventure of a lifetime and this is my extraordinary story. With my wife Leonie, Max the cat and a few parrots, we drove 2,500km north across Australia in our Combi van to start a new life. Our excitement is contagious and our fears are real. "My Shout at the Daly Waters Pub" gives the reader a fascinating insight into the original pub owners and then my life as the publican, many years later, in a remote Northern Territory town of only six houses, thirteen locals and a bush pub. Many photos accompany the rollicking pub yarns and thought-provoking anecdotes describing our experience of living in the outback.

Book excerpt: Australia has a rich history of ghost sightings and spooky tales, from the time of European settlement until today - and they are all here in GREAT AUSTRALIAN GHOST STORIES. From gore-spattered convicts and elegant women out of our colonial past to the mysterious ghost lights of the outback and angry poltergeists that wreak havoc on modern homes, Australia seems to be teeming with the restless spirits of our ancestors. You'll meet a wide cross section of them in this far-reaching collection of stories drawn from all the Australian states and covering two centuries of our nation's history. Some ghosts are vengeful, some aloof, others mysterious, sad, kind, wistful or amusing, but all share one quality - they're scary - and their stories are hair-raising. You'll join a terrified young couple on a Ferris wheel when a spectre appears inside their cage, you'll learn about Australia's most famous ghost and visit Australia's most notorious haunted house where icy hands gripped the throats of unsuspecting visitors. You'll meet a ghost made famous by Henry Lawson, discover what 'the haunted dunny' means to the people of a village in the Barossa Valley and share in the terror of a medical student when a cadaver comes back from the dead and takes up residence in the student's laptop. So, dear reader, if you have the courage, make sure the doors and windows are locked, settle in your favourite chair, keep a blanket handy (for when your blood runs cold) and join Richard Davis on this remarkable journey behind the veil that separates the mortal from the eternal - right here in our own back yard.
