Book excerpt: "This much-needed handbook is an excellent resource for principals and assistant principals as they face the challenges of school improvement together. The exercises focus school leaders on building their collective strengths, expanding their learning opportunities, providing schools with strong succession plans, and enabling leadership teams to address differences while building the capacity for effective teamwork." —Sandra J. Stein, Chief Executive Officer NYC Leadership Academy Nurture the development of future school leaders through effective principal–assistant principal partnerships! Assistant principals represent the next generation of school principals, so it is critical that schools and districts address the professional development of these key administrators. In this essential resource, Gary Bloom and Martin L. Krovetz demonstrate how principals and assistant principals can use their collaborative relationships to prepare assistant principals for future leadership roles. This resource views the partnership between principals and assistant principals as a coaching-based relationship that benefits students and schools. Through this apprenticeship approach, assistant principals receive the mentoring and support they need to become tomorrow′s school leaders, and principals benefit from a more effective leadership team. The authors offer discussion questions, activities for the assistant principal, and shared activities that help principals and their assistants to: Develop a shared vision for their relationship and their school Design a plan for communication and professional development Build assistants′ skills in school management, instructional leadership, and personnel management Addressing a critical yet frequently neglected topic, Powerful Partnerships helps principals mentor assistant principals, promote their professional development, and prepare them for challenging new positions in the future!

This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The argumentative point of departure of this scholarly book is the common conviction of specialists in the field of education in South Africa that the national education system is not at a satisfactory level – in both the academic and the public discourse. Such allegations are made and, frequently, stronger adjectives than ‘non-satisfactory’ are used. Results of international test series in which South Africa has participated, such as the 2015 TIMSS tests, confirm the negative verdicts found in the (public and scholarly) discourse. This book aims to argue that although the lack of performance could be attributed to a multiplicity of factors, one factor that can make a difference in the achievement levels obtained by learners in schools is leadership. The book demonstrates that a particular problem of both the scholarly and the public discourse on education in South Africa is an overtone of defeatism or resignation, blaming all ills in the education system and educational institutions on historical legacies and/or contextual factors (such as socio-economic deprivation in the catchment areas of schools) or poor resources and infrastructure. This collected work was inspired by a recently published spate of articles on top-performing schools (including top-performing schools in rural communities), in which it was demonstrated that good leadership can overcome such contextual and other challenges. The book unpacks the issue of leadership in South African schools from a variety of perspectives, thus contributing to the development of the scholarly discourse on Educational Leadership in South Africa. The target audience of the book is scholars of Educational Leadership. The research reported in the chapters draw on a wide range of methodologies, including empirical (survey) research (questionnaires and interviews), critical literature surveys, and the comparative method.

Book excerpt: Leadership Through Mentoring: The Key to Improving the Principals Confidence and Skill lays out the case for the development of robust mentorship programs to support new school leaders. With principal turnover at an all-time high, it is urgent that schools and districts find ways to help newly appointed leaders grow into effective supervisors, managers, and strategic thinkers who can also find personal and professional satisfaction in their careers. Using examples from several established and successful state programs, Leadership Through Mentoring shows how new school leaders’ effectiveness, vision, and engagement can be grown through intentionally designed and executed programs that offer supportive guidance and wise counsel from experienced leaders. Thoughtfully created and appropriately resourced, such programs can pave the way to longer and more successful principal tenures, which research shows lead directly to significant improvements in schools’ cultures, educational efficacy, and teacher and student performance. This is a book for leaders and governing bodies in all kinds of schools.

Book excerpt: As a principal, you know how challenging it is to build a dedicated staff, encourage parental support, help students get excited about learning, and create a working school culture. You know that it takes a more than a few years (and surviving a few school events gone awry) to gain the trust of staff, students, and community. And you probably think that once these elements are in place, you'll be able to relax and let your school run like a well-oiled machine, right? Wrong. Even the most successful principals can become stuck in tired routines that inhibit collaboration and shut down opportunities for learning and change. In Principals Who Learn: Asking the Right Questions, Seeking the Best Solutions, former principals Barbara Kohm and Beverly Nance encourage principals to step out of their comfort zone and pursue learning with their staff. Kohm and Nance give principals the tools to shift from being top-down, authoritarian leaders to becoming open collaborators and continual learners. The authors show principals how to *Learn to listen to all voices. *Turn "bad guys" into allies. *Develop an open and collaborative culture. *Redesign staff meetings for more effectiveness. *Resolve conflicts and solve problems. *Turn mistakes into learning opportunities. Engaging scenarios and reflection questions further help principals re-examine their leadership practices and look at their school from new vantage points. Whether you are a new principal seeking guidance or a seasoned veteran looking to make a change, Principals Who Learn will reinvigorate your work and help you develop and adapt your skills to meet the ever-changing needs of your school. Barbara Kohm worked for 14 years as an elementary school principal and for 10 years as an early childhood program director. She now works as a consultant to principals in a variety of school districts. Beverly Nance worked as a high school assistant principal and a middle school principal. She is now the co-director of the St. Louis Principals Academy and a leadership consultant and mentor for principals in a variety of school districts.

Book excerpt: Far too little attention has been paid to the role that assistant principals have in the development of high performing schools. Impact provides specific, practical, and replicable leadership strategies for today’s assistant principal. Impact describes how to build meaningful principal/assistant principal leadership teams. The opportunities that assistant principals have to be the instructional leader of the school and the voice of the faculty, and the principal; in other words, how to “lead from the middle” are examined. Impact is a practitioner’s guide for the assistant principal striving to be a school leader. Target audiences include teachers wishing to become assistant principals, current assistant principals looking to excel and lead careers of significance, colleges of education working with graduate students who are being trained in P-12 school administration, and sitting school principals looking to expand the often under-utilized, potential of the assistant principal. This book examines the art and science of the assistant principal as a school leader; as a leader who impacts the lives of teachers and students. Great assistant principals matter.
