Although the associated time and length scales are significantly smaller than those appropriate to most natural flows of interest, insights can occur when discussing actual laboratory experiments provided that the Reynolds number is sufficiently large so that viscous effects do not show a leading order influence. Lock release experiments were performed and the speed was analyzed using DigImage and Digiflow. The equilibrium intrusion is discussed which is an extension of the doubly symmetric case, where the density of the current is the depth-weighted mean density of the layers. The non-equilibrium case is also discussed and unlike the equilibrium flow, the intrusion fluid steadily rises or falls behind the intrusion front, adding an additional source of energy to drive the flow. These intrusions were performed in two-layer and continuous stratifications. The results presented in this thesis include experimental and numerical data and follow closely to the work of previous researchers' theoretical models.

The nonlinear model includes two active layers; the intrusion itself, which occupies the entire shelf (and extends beyond the shelf break), and the heavy fluid situated both ahead of the intrusion and in the deep ocean. The section of the intrusion which extends beyond the shelf break overlies an infinitely deep ocean. Friction is neglected but the motions near the intrusion's leading edge are not constrained to be quasi-geostrophic nor are they constrained to be hydrostatic. Solutions for steadily propagating currents are constructed analytically by taking into account the flow-forces behind and ahead of the nose, and considering the conservation of energy and potential vorticity. This procedure leads to a set of algebraic equations, which are solved analytically using a perturbation scheme in epsilon the ration between the internal deformation radius and the shelf width. It is found that all the heavy fluid ahead of the intrusion is trapped and cannot be removed from the shelf. Namely, it is pushed ahead of the intrusion's leading edge as the gravity current is advancing behind. Unlike intrusions without a shelf, which can never reach a truly steady propagation rate (in an infinitely deep ocean), the intrusion in question propagates steadily when epsilon approaches 0. Under such conditions, the propagation rate is given by sq. rt. (2 g'D), where g' is the reduced gravity and D is the intrusion depth at the shelf break (note that D> or = H, where H is the (uniform) shelf depth, so that at the shelf break the intrusion is deeper than the shelf. Unstable stratification, in which density and pressure gradients are not aligned, results in gravity-driven flow. Gravity currents are a subset of these flows in which horizontal density gradients sharpen and propagate horizontally, transporting mass, momentum, and energy. If the density of the gravity current is within the density extrema of the stably stratified ambient fluid, it propagates as an intrusion at an intermediate height. Through laboratory experiments and numerical simulations, this dissertation explores the influence of stratification on the dynamics of gravity-driven intrusions. Intrusions require stable stratification in the ambient fluid, which is capable of transporting momentum and energy away from the current in the form of internal waves. We investigate the constant velocity propagation of well-mixed intrusions propagating into a linearly stratified ambient fluid. Varying the level of neutral buoyancy, we quantify the corresponding variation in structure, momentum, and energy of the upstream wave field. Adjacent stable stratifications of differing vertical density structure necessarily entail horizontal density gradients. These gradients determine the hydrostatic pressure differences driving the ensuing gravity current. We examine the mid-depth, constant velocity propagation of one linearly stratified fluid into another more strongly linearly stratified fluid. Working from the available potential energy of the system and measurements of the intrusion thickness, we develop an energy model to describe the speed of the intrusion in terms of the ratio of the two buoyancy frequencies. Distinct from adjacent linear stratifications, adjacent discrete stratifications may create flow consisting of interleaving intrusions. Single intrusions into a two-layer ambient fluid are well understood. Limiting our study to an idealized system of multiple intrusions, we attempt to extend the two-layer model to describe the interleaving process. We show that this simple extension fails when the average densities of the two stratifications are unequal, and suggest that this failure is due to the coupling of interfacial waves across constant density layers.
