Book Synopsis Gravitational Waves from a Quantum Field Theory Perspective by : Subhendra Mohanty
Download or read book Gravitational Waves from a Quantum Field Theory Perspective written by Subhendra Mohanty and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats the subject of gravitational waves (GWs) production in binary stars or black-holes and in the early universe, using tools of quantum field theory which are familiar to graduate students and researchers in particle physics. A special focus is given to the generation of templates of gravitational wave signals from Feynman diagram calculations of transition amplitudes, which interests active researchers in GWs. The book presents field theory concepts, like supersymmetry realized in spinning binaries and soft-graviton theorems, that can have practical applications in novel GW signals, like the memory effect. The book also aims at specialists in both GWs and particle physics addressing cosmological models of phase transition and inflation that can be tested in observations at terrestrial and space based interferometers, pulsar timing arrays, and the cosmic microwave anisotropy observations.
Book Synopsis Gravitational Waves by : Michele Maggiore
Download or read book Gravitational Waves written by Michele Maggiore and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-10-05 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to become a major reference text for gravitational-wave physics, covering in detail both the experimental and the theoretical aspects. It is the only existing book on gravitational waves to date, and it will likely remain unique for its broadness and scope. It brings the reader to the forefront of present-day research, both theoretical and experimental, assuming no previous knowledge of gravitational-wave physics. Part I of Volume 1 is devoted to the theory of gravitational waves. Here we have re-derived - in a coherent way - most of the results that we present, clarifying or streamlining existing derivations. Part II of Volume 1 is devoted to a description of experimental gravitational-wave physics. We discuss in great detail existing and planned experiments, as well as data analysis techniques.
Book Synopsis Progress and Visions in Quantum Theory in View of Gravity by : Felix Finster
Download or read book Progress and Visions in Quantum Theory in View of Gravity written by Felix Finster and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2021-04-10 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on a critical discussion of the status and prospects of current approaches in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, in particular concerning gravity. It contains a carefully selected cross-section of lectures and discussions at the seventh conference “Progress and Visions in Quantum Theory in View of Gravity” which took place in fall 2018 at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. In contrast to usual proceeding volumes, instead of reporting on the most recent technical results, contributors were asked to discuss visions and new ideas in foundational physics, in particular concerning foundations of quantum field theory. A special focus has been put on the question of which physical principles of quantum (field) theory can be considered fundamental in view of gravity. The book is mainly addressed to mathematicians and physicists who are interested in fundamental questions of mathematical physics. It allows the reader to obtain a broad and up-to-date overview of a fascinating active research area.
Book Synopsis Gravitational Theories Beyond General Relativity by : Iberê Kuntz
Download or read book Gravitational Theories Beyond General Relativity written by Iberê Kuntz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the success of general relativity in explaining classical gravitational phenomena, several problems at the interface between gravitation and high energy physics still remain open. The purpose of this thesis is to explore quantum gravity and its phenomenological consequences for dark matter, gravitational waves and inflation. A new formalism to classify gravitational theories based on their degrees of freedom is introduced and, in light of this classification, it is argued that dark matter is no different from modified gravity. Gravitational waves are shown to be damped due to quantum degrees of freedom. The consequences for gravitational wave events are also discussed. The non-minimal coupling of the Higgs boson to gravity is studied in connection with Starobinsky inflation and its implications for the vacuum instability problem is analyzed.

Download or read book Topics In Quantum Field Theory: Modern Methods In Fundamental Physics written by D H Tchrakian and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-12-30 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the proceedings of a meeting which brought together contributors from the four European networks in the area of the theory of fundamental interactions. While each of these networks overlaps strongly with all the others, this coming together gives the proceedings a greater than usual breadth of subjects nevertheless. The wide range of topics in quantum field theory covered includes Hamiltonian and semiclassical methods, critical phenomena and various aspects of classical and quantum gravity including also a study in the detection of gravitational radiation. This, together with the leading item on the recent history of the subject, gives an overall perspective of the many new research directions in this area.

Book Synopsis 100 Years of Relativity by : Abhay Ashtekar
Download or read book 100 Years of Relativity written by Abhay Ashtekar and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to Einstein''s relativity theories, our notions of space and time underwent profound revisions about a 100 years ago. The resulting interplay between geometry and physics has dominated all of fundamental physics since then. This volume contains contributions from leading researchers, worldwide, who have thought deeply about the nature and consequences of this interplay. The articles take a long-range view of the subject and distill the most important advances in broad terms, making them easily accessible to non-specialists. The first part is devoted to a summary of how relativity theories were born (J Stachel). The second part discusses the most dramatic ramifications of general relativity, such as black holes (P Chrusciel and R Price), space-time singularities (H Nicolai and A Rendall), gravitational waves (P Laguna and P Saulson), the large scale structure of the cosmos (T Padmanabhan); experimental status of this theory (C Will) as well as its practical application to the GPS system (N Ashby). The last part looks beyond Einstein and provides glimpses into what is in store for us in the 21st century. Contributions here include summaries of radical changes in the notions of space and time that are emerging from quantum field theory in curved space-times (Ford), string theory (T Banks), loop quantum gravity (A Ashtekar), quantum cosmology (M Bojowald), discrete approaches (Dowker, Gambini and Pullin) and twistor theory (R Penrose).

Book Synopsis Gravity, Gauge Theories and Quantum Cosmology by : J.V. Narlikar
Download or read book Gravity, Gauge Theories and Quantum Cosmology written by J.V. Narlikar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several decades since its inception, Einstein's general theory of relativity stood somewhat aloof from the rest of physics. Paradoxically, the attributes which normally boost a physical theory - namely, its perfection as a theoreti cal framework and the extraordinary intellectual achievement underlying i- prevented the general theory from being assimilated in the mainstream of physics. It was as if theoreticians hesitated to tamper with something that is manifestly so beautiful. Happily, two developments in the 1970s have narrowed the gap. In 1974 Stephen Hawking arrived at the remarkable result that black holes radiate after all. And in the second half of the decade, particle physicists discovered that the only scenario for applying their grand unified theories was offered by the very early phase in the history of the Big Bang universe. In both cases, it was necessary to discuss the ideas of quantum field theory in the background of curved spacetime that is basic to general relativity. This is, however, only half the total story. If gravity is to be brought into the general fold of theoretical physics we have to know how to quantize it. To date this has proved a formidable task although most physicists would agree that, as in the case of grand unified theories, quantum gravity will have applications to cosmology, in the very early stages of the Big Bang universe. In fact, the present picture of the Big Bang universe necessarily forces us to think of quantum cosmology.
Book Synopsis Everything About Gravity - Proceedings Of The Second Lecospa International Symposium by : Pisin Chen
Download or read book Everything About Gravity - Proceedings Of The Second Lecospa International Symposium written by Pisin Chen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-12-29 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of the 2nd LeCosPA International Symposium, 'Everything about Gravity', collects 78 papers contributed by the symposium's Plenary Session and Parallel Session speakers. Organizers of the Parallel Sessions have in addition prepared summaries for their own sessions. The topics range from quasi-local energy in GR in the presence of gravitational radiations, a gauge theory perspective of gravity, naked black hole firewalls related to the black hole information loss paradox, a new theory of spacetime quantization, relations between the Schwinger effect and the Hawking radiation and Unruh effect, conformal frames in cosmology, surprises in nonrelativistic naturalness, inflation and tensor fluctuations, emergent spacetime for quantum gravity, understanding strongly coupled magnetism through holographic principle, the detections of dark matter, ultra-high energy cosmic neutrinos and cosmic rays, etc. Last but not least, the closing remark delivered by John Ellis raised the following question: Does cosmological inflation require a modification of Einstein's gravity? After 100 years of remarkable success of Einstein's general relativity, the development of a successful quantum theory of gravity has become a major goal in physics in the 21st century. This volume serves as a valuable reference for scientists who are interested in frontier research topics of gravity.
Book Synopsis Epistemology of Experimental Gravity - Scientific Rationality by : Nicolae Sfetcu
Download or read book Epistemology of Experimental Gravity - Scientific Rationality written by Nicolae Sfetcu and published by MultiMedia Publishing. This book was released on with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of gravitational tests from an epistemological perspective framed in the concept of rational reconstruction of Imre Lakatos, based on his methodology of research programmes. Unlike other works on the same subject, the evaluated period is very extensive, starting with Newton's natural philosophy and up to the quantum gravity theories of today. In order to explain in a more rational way the complex evolution of the gravity concept of the last century, I propose a natural extension of the methodology of the research programmes of Lakatos that I then use during the paper. I believe that this approach offers a new perspective on how evolved over time the concept of gravity and the methods of testing each theory of gravity, through observations and experiments. I argue, based on the methodology of the research programmes and the studies of scientists and philosophers, that the current theories of quantum gravity are degenerative, due to the lack of experimental evidence over a long period of time and of self-immunization against the possibility of falsification. Moreover, a methodological current is being developed that assigns a secondary, unimportant role to verification through observations and/or experiments. For this reason, it will not be possible to have a complete theory of quantum gravity in its current form, which to include to the limit the general relativity, since physical theories have always been adjusted, during their evolution, based on observational or experimental tests, and verified by the predictions made. Also, contrary to a widespread opinion and current active programs regarding the unification of all the fundamental forces of physics in a single final theory, based on string theory, I argue that this unification is generally unlikely, and it is not possible anyway for a unification to be developed based on current theories of quantum gravity, including string theory. In addition, I support the views of some scientists and philosophers that currently too much resources are being consumed on the idea of developing quantum gravity theories, and in particular string theory, to include general relativity and to unify gravity with other forces, as long as science does not impose such research programs. Book Synopsis Waves, Particles and Fields by : Anthony C. Fischer-Cripps
Download or read book Waves, Particles and Fields written by Anthony C. Fischer-Cripps and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-06-20 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choice Outstanding Title, September 2020 This book fills a gap in the middle ground between quantum mechanics of a single electron to the concept of a quantum field. In doing so, the book is divided into two parts; the first provides the necessary background to quantum theory extending from Planck’s formulation of black body radiation to Schrodinger’s equation; and the second part explores Dirac’s relativistic electron to quantum fields, finishing with an description of Feynman diagrams and their meaning. Much more than a popular account, yet not too heavy so as to be inaccessible, this book assumes no prior knowledge of quantum physics or field theory and provides the necessary foundations for readers to then progress to more advanced texts on quantum field theory. It will be of interest to undergraduate students in physics and mathematics, in addition to an interested, general audience. Features: Provides an extensive yet accessible background to the concepts Contains numerous, illustrative diagrams Presents in-depth explanations of difficult subjects
Book Synopsis Beyond the Quantum by : Theo M. Nieuwenhuizen
Download or read book Beyond the Quantum written by Theo M. Nieuwenhuizen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Already Einstein could never see quantum mechanics as a complete theory. Nowadays, many researchers, including 't Hooft, view quantum mechanics as a statistical description of some underlying reality. The workshop Beyond the Quantum, organized in Spring 2006 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden, The Netherlands, was one of the first meetings completely devoted to physics that may need an explanation beyond quantum mechanics. A broad variety of subjects was covered. The present book reflects this.
