Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Our Galaxy, the Milky way, is surrounded by a dark matter spherical halo. This halo is not homogeneous, indeed it has substructure. Bound dark matter substructure, "subhalos", are dark matter dynamic clumps with a roughly spherical shape. A promising indirect way to detect dark matter subhalos in our Galaxy is the phenomenon of microlensing. When a distant star's light path goes through the proximity of a heavy astronomical object, the path "bends" and the star appears to be in a different position. As the substructure is constantly moving, the distant star's image will move as well, which in fact is a signature of astronomic microlensing by dark matter subhalos. This thesis studies how gravitational microlensing can contribute to search of dark matter. The first chapter depicts the current picture of dark matter. Some of the most compelling pieces of evidence for the existence of dark matter are explained. We present the characteristics of dark matter candidates and focus on a specific candidate, the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle. We also describe the dark matter distribution and substructure in the Milky Way. Finally, we outline two current approaches to detect dark matter. In the second chapter, we derive an equation for the deflection angle that a galactic subhalo induces in the light path of a distant source. This equation is used to make predictions for the microlensing signature of possible dark matter subhalos. The third chapter is devoted to the analysis of the relationships between the deflection angle and the parameters involved in a microlensing event. As an input we use the subhalos created in the N-body simulation \texttt{Via Lactea}. From the analysis we deduce under which conditions microlensing events are more likely to be observed. Chapter 4 introduces the topic of dark matter detection from its particles' annihilation. Dark matter subhalos can be detected from the standard model products of the annihilations, e.g., photons. Gravitational microlensing can be used to crosscheck whether the subhalo candidates found are indeed dark matter. This chapter reviews the theory of dark matter annihilation into photons. Also, we reconstructed a whole sky map with dark matter contribution to the electromagnetic background radiation. In chapter 5 we make predictions for the microlensing signatures that actual subhalo candidates can induce. Subhalo candidates are found using two techniques, the Non-Poissonian Template Fitting and looking for spatially extended sources with emission only in the gamma-rays. For both techniques we explain the underlying physics behind the respective approach, describe the process of subhalo candidates selection, relate the subhalos' information obtained from those techniques with the subhalo properties needed to calculate the deflection angle and finally, make predictions for possible microlensing events induced by the subhalo candidates under consideration. The last chapter summarizes the important points of this thesis and proposes a detection strategy to observe microlensing events. We also describe the Gaia mission as it has the instruments needed to measure these microlensing signatures."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the phenomenology of gravitational lensing in an accessible manner and provides a thorough discussion of the related astrophysical applications. It is intended for advanced undergraduates and graduate students who want to start working in this rapidly evolving field. This includes also senior researchers who are interested in ongoing or future surveys and missions such as DES, Euclid, WFIRST, LSST. The reader is guided through many fascinating topics related to gravitational lensing like the structure of our galaxy, the searching for exoplanets, the investigation of dark matter in galaxies and galaxy clusters, and several aspects of cosmology, including dark energy and the cosmic microwave background. The author, who has gained valuable experience as academic teacher, guides the readers towards the comprehension of the theory of gravitational lensing and related observational techniques by using simple codes written in python. This approach, beyond facilitating the understanding of gravitational lensing, is preparatory for learning the python programming language which is gaining large popularity both in academia and in the private sector.

Book excerpt: "In Einstein’s Telescope, Evalyn Gates, an expert on all that’s dark in the universe, brings dark matter, dark energy, and even black holes to light." —Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist, American Museum of Natural History, and New York Times best-selling author of Astrophysics for People in a Hurry In 1936, Albert Einstein predicted that gravitational distortions would allow space itself to act as a telescope far more powerful than humans could ever build. Now, cosmologists at the forefront of their field are using this radical technique ("Einstein’s Telescope") to detect the invisible. In fresh, engaging prose, astrophysicist Evalyn Gates explains how this tool is enabling scientists to uncover planets as big as the Earth, discover black holes as they whirl through space, and trace the evolution of cosmic architecture over billions of years. Powerful and accessible, Einstein’s Telescope takes us to the brink of a revolution in our understanding of the deepest mysteries of the Universe.

Hence it is of critical importance now not just to pursue further evidence for its existence but rather to identify what the dark matter is. Assessment of progress in this area was the objective of the first International Workshop on the Identification of Dark Matter, in particular to consider what techniques, both observational and experimental, are currently being used, how successful they are now and what new techniques will improve the prospects of identifying the likely candidates. The meeting included reviews on major particle astrophysics topics in dark matter but was largely devoted to short contributed talks on new work in the field. This book is the written proceedings of the meeting.

Book excerpt: If standard gravitational theory is correct, then most of the matterin the universe is in an unidentified form which does not emit enoughlight to have been detected by current instrumentation. This book isthe second editon of the lectures given at the 4th Jerusalem WinterSchool for Theoretical Physics, with new material added. The lecturesare devoted to the missing matter problem in the universe, thesearch to understand dark matter. The goal of this volume is to makecurrent research work on unseen matter accessible to students withoutprior experience in this area and to provide insights for experts inrelated research fields. Due to the pedagogical nature of the originallectures and the intense discussions between the lecturers and thestudents, the written lectures included in this volume often containtechniques and explanations not found in more formal journalpublications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s in the dark? Countless generations have gazed up at the night sky and asked this question—the same question that cosmologists ask themselves as they study the universe. The answer turns out to be surprising and rich. The space between stars is filled with an exotic substance called “dark matter” that exerts gravity but does not emit, absorb, or reflect light. The space between galaxies is rife with “dark energy” that creates a sort of cosmic antigravity causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. Together, dark matter and dark energy account for 95 percent of the content of the universe. News reporters and science journalists routinely talk about these findings using terms that they assume we have a working knowledge of, but do you really understand how astronomers arrive at their findings or what it all means? Cosmologists face a conundrum: how can we study substances we cannot see, let alone manipulate? A powerful approach is to observe objects whose motion is influenced by gravity. Einstein predicted that gravity can act like a lens to bend light. Today we see hundreds of cases of this—instances where the gravity of a distant galaxy distorts our view of a more distant object, creating multiple images or spectacular arcs on the sky. Gravitational lensing is now a key part of the international quest to understand the invisible substance that surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the universe together. A Ray of Light in a Sea of Dark Matter offers readers a concise, accessible explanation of how astronomers probe dark matter. Readers quickly gain an understanding of what might be out there, how scientists arrive at their findings, and why this research is important to us. Engaging and insightful, Charles Keeton gives everyone an opportunity to be an active learner and listener in our ever-expanding universe. Watch a video with Charles Keeton: Watch video now. Book excerpt: There is general agreement among astrophysicists that most of the matter in the universe is dark, but a wide divergence of views about what this dark matter is. This volume addresses the problem of detecting and identifying dark matter candidates from axions to black holes. Although theoretical issues are considered, the focus of the book is on observational and experimental techniques, current results and future prospects.
