Book excerpt: “The Church opposes any unjust treatment of homosexual persons, insisting on their equal dignity before God and firmly correcting anyone who in any way ridicules homosexual persons. It is also the duty of the Church in every diocese to provide adequate pastoral programs to help homosexual men and women live the Gospel to the full.” Father John F. Harvey Founder of Courage For more than thirty years, Courage has been helping same-sex-attracted Catholic men and women to lead chaste lives. This book will relate not just the history of the apostolate but how and why it was founded. It will introduce readers to the numerous souls whose lives were changed by following the goals of Courage and who found peace, understanding, and joy in choosing a life of chastity. This book is an attempt to tell the story of Courage from the point of view of a member. Founded in 1980 in New York, Courage has grown into an international organization. Yet its very existence seems to defy the tide of the popular culture. In spite of pressure on all sides and even from inside the Church, Courage continues to stress the traditional teachings of the Church. While society’s attitudes toward sexuality have changed, the teachings of the Church have not. It is possible that of all the Church’s teachings, none has been more distorted and misunderstood than the teaching regarding human sexuality. Yet the Church could not be more clear: all of us, homosexual and heterosexual, are called to be chaste.
Book Synopsis The Secrets of Abu Ghraib Revealed by : Christopher Graveline
Download or read book The Secrets of Abu Ghraib Revealed written by Christopher Graveline and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-05-31 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 28, 2004, 60 Minutes II broadcast the now-infamous photos of prisoner abuse by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib. The news quickly spread worldwide, undermining the U.S. presence in Iraq. Despite several Department of Defense investigations and eleven courts-martial convictions, important questions remain about the events at Abu Ghraib. Who are these soldiers? How involved were top administration officials and army generals in the abuses? Were the soldiers simply following orders? Do these photographs depict a new American interrogation policy? Christopher Graveline and Michael Clemens provide the answers. No one has investigated the true story behind the events at Abu Ghraib as thoroughly as the authors. Only six people had complete knowledge of the Abu Ghraib investigation and prosecutions; Graveline and Clemens are two of them. They give readers unprecedented access to the inner workings of the investigation leading to the trials of PFC Lynndie England, Cpl. Charles Graner, and others. Complete with actual arguments of counsel, testimony, and evidence, this groundbreaking book puts the reader in the middle of the investigation and the subsequent trials, revealing one of the darker episodes in American military history.

Book Synopsis The Statin Damage Crisis by : Duane Graveline
Download or read book The Statin Damage Crisis written by Duane Graveline and published by . This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this newly updated and re-edited 2012 edition, the side effects of cholesterol lowering statins are thoroughly assessed. Also reviewed are dietary and supplement choices that may offer benefit in the prevention of heart disease and in combating and preventing statin damage. The cholesterol lowering drugs known as statins are of proven benefit for some groups of people for the prevention of heart attacks and stroke, but statins also have a dark side. Tens of thousands of people have been victims of a huge array of statin drugs side effects, ranging from permanent cognitive dysfunction and severe personality change to disabilities from permanent peripheral neuropathy, permanent myopathy and chronic muscular degeneration. It has recently been reported that muscle pain cases frequently become permanent and many neurologists now regard statin neuropathy as predictably resistant to traditional treatment. When statins were first marketed there was seemingly no awareness of possible mitochondrial DNA effect or the importance of glial cell cholesterol to cognitive function and little or no concern that to inhibit cholesterol means to interrupt its pathway shared by both CoQ10 and dolichols and many other vital substances. Nor was it known that statins are powerful anti-inflammatory agents, the fundamental reason for their benefit in cardiovascular risk. The outmoded concept of looking at cholesterol numbers as a predictor of cardiovascular risk is increasingly being dismissed as studies point to cholesterol levels as being seemingly irrelevant to the process of atherosclerosis. In addition to the crisis of thousands of people disabled by statin associated neuro-muscular problems is the fact that many physicians still remain unaware that statins can even do this. Then there is the crisis of the growing trend of the insurance industry to use cholesterol levels as a reason to deny health care coverage or life insurance coverage. Some employers even require cholesterol levels to be below a certain number as a condition of employment. Plus the crisis of patients being forced into taking a statin because not to do so would result in having to find a new doctor. The Statin Damage Crisis looks at how statins work, the importance of cholesterol in the body, inflammation and atherosclerosis, anti-inflammatory alternatives to statins, serious side effects of statins, and dietary supplements of possible benefit to those taking statins or that were forced to stop taking a statin due to unpleasant and even disabling side effects.
Download or read book Shattered Dreams written by Colin Burges and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shattered Dreams delves into the personal stories and recollections of several men and women who were in line to fly a specific or future space mission but lost that opportunity due to personal reasons, mission cancellations, or even tragedies. While some of the subjects are familiar names in spaceflight history, the accounts of others are told here for the first time. Colin Burgess features spaceflight candidates from the United States, Russia, Indonesia, Australia, and Great Britain. Shattered Dreams brings to new life such episodes and upheavals in spaceflight history as the saga of the three Apollo missions that were cancelled due to budgetary constraints and never flew; NASA astronaut Patricia Hilliard Robertson, who died of burn injuries after her airplane crashed before she had a chance to fly into space; and a female cosmonaut who might have become the first journalist to fly in space. Another NASA astronaut was preparing to fly an Apollo mission before he was diagnosed with a disqualifying illness. There is also the amazing story of the pilot who could have bailed out of his damaged aircraft but held off while heroically avoiding a populated area and later applied to NASA to fulfill his cherished dream of becoming an astronaut despite having lost both legs in the accident. These are the incredibly human stories of competitive realists fired with an unquenchable passion. Their accounts reveal in their own words—and those of others close to them—how their shared ambition would go awry through personal accidents, illness, the Challenger disaster, death, or other circumstances.

Book Synopsis Cholesterol Clarity by : Jimmy Moore
Download or read book Cholesterol Clarity written by Jimmy Moore and published by Victory Belt Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you confused by what your cholesterol levels really say about your health? Don't you wish someone could just spell it out in simple, easy-to-understand language and tell you what, if anything, you need to do about your cholesterol? Good news! That's precisely what Cholesterol Clarity is designed to do. Jimmy Moore, a prominent and highly respected health blogger and podcaster, has teamed up with Dr. Eric Westman, a practicing internist and nutrition researcher, to bring you one of the most unique books you'll ever read on this subject, featuring exclusive interviews with twenty-nine of the world's top experts from various fields to give you the complete lowdown on cholesterol. If you're worried about any confusing medical jargon in this book, don't be—this critical information is broken down for you to grasp what is really important and what is not. You won't find this kind of comprehensive, cutting-edge, expert-driven cholesterol information all in one place anywhere else. Has your doctor told you your total and/or LDL cholesterol is too high and thus requires you to take immediate action to lower it? Has the solution to your "high cholesterol" been to cut down on your saturated fat intake, eat more "healthy" whole grains and vegetable oils, and possibly even take a prescription medication like a statin to lower it to "desirable" levels? If so, then this is the book for you. Learn what the real deal is from some of the leading experts on the subject. Not only will Cholesterol Clarity tell you what your cholesterol tests—LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and other key cholesterol markers—really mean, but it will also arm you with nutritional guidance that will lead you to optimal health. Are you ready to find out what the HDL is wrong with your numbers?Within the pages of this book you'll learn invaluable lessons, including: • Why your LDL-C and total cholesterol numbers may not be as important in determining your health as your doctor may think-The undeniable negative role that chronic inflammation plays in your health • Why cholesterol-lowering statin drugs don't necessarily solve your heart health concerns • Why your doctor should be testing for LDL particles and particle size when measuring cholesterol • Why HDL and triglycerides are far more predictive of health concerns than LDL-C and total cholesterol • Why consuming foods with saturated fat is good for you, and why carbohydrate-based foods can be detrimental to attaining the best cholesterol numbers • Why a growing number of physicians, researchers, and nutritionists believe treating cholesterol numbers is virtually irrelevant Contributing experts include Cassie Bjork, RD; Philip Blair, MD; Jonny Bowden, PhD; John Briffa, BSc, MB, BS; Dominic D'Agostino, PhD; William Davis, MD; Thomas Dayspring, MD; David Diamond, PhD; Ron Ehrlich, BDS, FACNEM; Jeffry N.
