Book Synopsis We Are What We Remember by : Laura Mattoon D’Amore
Download or read book We Are What We Remember written by Laura Mattoon D’Amore and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-16 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commemorative practices are revised and rebuilt based on the spirit of the time in which they are re/created. Historians sometimes imagine that commemoration captures history, but actually commemoration creates new narratives about history that allow people to interact with the past in a way that they find meaningful. As our social values change (race, gender, religion, sexuality, class), our commemorations do, too. We Are What We Remember: The American Past Through Commemoration, analyzes current trends in the study of historical memory that are particularly relevant to our own present – our biases, our politics, our contextual moment – and strive to name forgotten, overlooked, and denied pasts in traditional histories. Race, gender, and sexuality, for example, raise questions about our most treasured myths: where were the slaves at Jamestowne? How do women or lesbians protect and preserve their own histories, when no one else wants to write them? Our current social climate allows us to question authority, and especially the authoritative definitions of nation, patriotism, and heroism, and belonging. How do we “un-commemorate” things that were “mis-commemorated” in the past? How do we repair the damage done by past commemorations? The chapters in this book, contributed by eighteen emerging and established scholars, examine these modern questions that entirely reimagine the landscape of commemoration as it has been practiced, and studied, before.
Book Synopsis Anglo-American Millennialism, from Milton to the Millerites by :
Download or read book Anglo-American Millennialism, from Milton to the Millerites written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neither the meliorist political culture of the nascent American republic nor its later drift toward apocalyptically tinged 'fundamentalist' Protestantism and dispensationalism can be explained outside the context of the shared Anglo-American traditions and practices of millennial expectation and apocalyptic angst--whether expressed by early colonists, Milton, Blake, Miller or the Continental Congress. In this chronologically direct and thematically varied volume, five scholars working in three distinct disciplines (Religion, English literature, and History) approach millennialism and apocalypticism in the British and Anglo-American contexts, making remarkable contributions both to the study of religious, literary and political culture in the English-speaking ecumene, and, at least implicitly, to the critique of disciplinary exclusivity. Only in such mixed company does the study of the millennial nexus in English and American religion, culture, literature and politics, from the time of Milton to the time of the Millerites, come into focus. Contributors include: Richard Connors, Andrew Escobedo, Andrew C. Gow, J.I. Little, Stephen A. Marini, Beth Quitslund, and John Howard Smith.

Book Synopsis Massachusetts Congregationalist Political Thought, 1760-1790 by : Dale S. Kuehne
Download or read book Massachusetts Congregationalist Political Thought, 1760-1790 written by Dale S. Kuehne and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the enormous attention scholars have given to the American founding, there continues to be significant debate concerning its meaning. Dale Kuehne asserts that the founding is important not only in the areas of public policy and jurisprudence, but also in our understanding of the American Constitution. In order to convey the full complexity of American political thought during this era, Kuehne provides an exhaustive study of the Massachusetts Congregationalist clergy, one of the founding's most politically influential, but often overlooked, groups. Because Congregationalism was the established religion of the time, the Congregational church functioned as the spiritual and political center of each parish. The Sunday worship services were the primary social activity of the parish and the most effective means of disseminating news and education throughout the colony. The minister was usually the most educated and visible person in the parish and, as such, held a position of considerable influence, which was often used for political purposes. Examining sermons from 1760 to 1790, Kuehne details the transformation of the ministers' thought and provides unique insight into the intellectual and religious roots of the American founding.
