Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management of Grassy Balds in Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Research/Resources Management Report No. 17, 1977 Gregory Bald is a rounded summit 4949 feet (1508 m) high on the Tennessee North Carolina line on the main ridge of the Great Smoky Mountains. It lies about 8 km south of the west end of Cades Cove (figure 1a). The top of the bald on the east end is almost level, but other parts of the bald slope steeply. The bald area extends slightly farther down hill on the south side than on the north side. The original area of the bald was about 16 acres. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grassy Balds of Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Vascular Plant Floristics, Rare Plant Distributions, and an Assessment of the Floristic Data Base The grassy balds have been one of the most thoroughly studied com munity types in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (grsm). These high elevation, treeless communities are anomalous in the sense that there is no climatic treeline at this latitude. Hence, interest in the grassy balds often has centered on whether they are natural or ahthropogenic in origin (wells 1937; Camp 1931; Billings and Mark 1957; Mark 1958; Gilbert l95h; Bruhn 196a; Gersmehl 1970; Lindsay and Bratton 1976, l979a). Some of these studies have also included detailed information on the vegetation of the balds in relation to site factors and successional trends. Despite this widespread interest in bald origin and succession, key issues remain. For example, apart from studies of woody species invasion, the over all floristic changes now occurring on the balds have not been thoroughly assessed. These floristic changes are of managerial concern, particularly with regard to the distribution of rare plants. Book excerpt: A field guide to the unique ecosystems and mountain trails in Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee "Treeless wonders" of the Southern Appalachians, grassy balds have long baffled scientists and enchanted outdoor enthusiasts. They exist as open spaces, often grassy meadows, found on or near the summits of mountains that are technically below the tree line. Are they artificial, the result of climate change, or something else entirely? While no one knows for sure, their natural beauty is undeniable. This book tells the story of these unique ecosystems and offers enthusiasts a guide to nineteen representative hiking trails across three states: Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Each season on the balds ushers in something special: 360-degree views on clear, crisp days in winter, a blanket of wildflowers across the mountaintops in spring, Catawba rhododendron and flame azaleas in early summer, and blueberries galore in the fall. But these unusual places are also under threat. The balds with their adjacent habitats host more than thirty plant and animal species that are endangered or threatened with many rapidly succumbing to new tree growth. Unique among hiking guides, this book is divided into two parts. Part 1 focuses on the balds collectively, with chapters on Native American legends and origin theories, European settlement and the effects of grazing, and efforts to preserve and maintain the balds in the face of environmental disruption. One chapter highlights the flora and fauna of the balds. Part 2 describes the hikes, each offering a unique experience, from the majestic wild ponies of Mount Rogers to the amazing pioneer history of Hooper Bald. This is the first guidebook to focus exclusively on the southern Appalachian grassy balds. The trails are organized into five geographic areas, with complete descriptions, maps, photos, and historical tidbits. At once a reference work and field guide, this book will encourage outdoor enthusiasts not only to experience the balds but to gain new appreciation for efforts to preserve and maintain these natural wonders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johnny Molloy, who has spent more than 800 nights backpacking in the Smokies, has updated his classic guide Top Trails: Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This revised edition has been completely updated, including the new backcountry reservation system implemented in the park. He has also added some excellent hikes, some of them well off the beaten path. For example, the hike to Baskins Creek Falls takes you past a pioneer homesite and to a scenic cascade overshadowed by more popular waterfalls nearby, making it an ideal destination for those who want to escape the crowds. A longer trek traverses the regal pine-oak forests of the western part of the park, making a stop at Abrams Falls, mixing solitude with a must-visit waterfall on every Smokies bucket list. Johnny also explores early park history on a hike up Kephart Prong. Here, you can see the remains of a fish hatchery constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, as well as a trail shelter erected by the CCC when the park was just coming to be. Backpackers will enjoy the new loop incorporating Walnut Bottoms along cascading Big Creek, coupled with a stop by historic Mount Cammerer tower, replete with stellar views, before overnighting at Davenport Shelter on the Appalachian Trail. Additionally, Johnny--who considers the Smokies his home stomping ground--makes sure that all the necessary information to help you execute a hike from directions to maps are correct. New photos add flair to the book.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of America's most beautiful and popular national parks. Located in the southern Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, it is home to more than 100,000 species of plants and animals. The grandeur and sheer scale of the park has been captured in Donald W. Linzey's new book, Natural History Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is the most extensive volume available on the park's natural history. Written from the perspective of a naturalist who has spent over fifty years conducting research in the park, this volume not only discusses the park's plant and animal life but also explores the impact that civilization has played in altering the area's landscape. Linzey, who has been a major contributor to the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, a concentrated effort to identify every species of plant and animal living within the park, draws from this deep reservoir of research. His book provides a thorough overview of everything a visitor to the park would need to know, without complex jargon. Both casual readers and those more interested in the ecology of the Great Smoky Mountains will find this book an enlightening and educational guide. Donald W. Linzey, a wildlife biologist and ecologist, is professor of biology at Wytheville Community College in Wytheville, Virginia. He is an authority on the mammals of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and its environs.

Book excerpt: With Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines in hand, visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National park are able to see the trees instead of just the forest. The location of various stands of virgin forest, the elevations at which certain trees and shrubs are found, and other pertinent floral data are contained in this handy guide by Arhtur Stupka. Published with the cooperation of the Great Smoky Mountains Association, the book includes sixteen pages of pictures showing rare or exceptional specimens and forest vistas. A special feature of the volume is a twenty-four-page section of identifications to keys to each group of plants prepared by Dr. A.J. Sharp (1904-1997), former University of Tennessee professor of botany and former president of the Botanical Society of America.
