Book excerpt: Founded in 1746, thirty years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Granville County has grown from a string of disconnected colonial settlements to include five vibrant municipalities surrounded by charming rural communities. In Looking Back: 275 Years of Granville County History, local historian Lewis Bowling intersperses historical facts with conversational, engaging stories about notable people, places, and events. Readers will learn about the founders and leaders of some of Granville County's major institutions and towns-Thomas Person, John Chavis, George C. Shaw, John Penn, and Maude Lassiter, to name a few. They will also learn about Granville County natives who received national recognition for their accomplishments-people like NASA Director James Webb, poet Sam Ragan, and daring female aeronaut Tiny Broadwick. In this book Bowling gives equal space and respect to regular citizens-teachers, farmers, coaches, and others-who worked to make Granville County a special place to call home. The narrative is enriched by newspaper stories, letters from soldiers, and first-person accounts such as reminiscences about growing up on a farm. Over 400 photographs, many never published before, vividly illustrate the text, making Granville County's past come to life.

Bennett, Pub. 1988, Reprinted 2019, 8 1/2" x 11", soft cover, 184 pages, Index, ISBN #0-89308-995-8. These are the so-called "Granville Grants" from the Secretary of State Land Grant Office (held by the NC State Archives) for the original Orange County area, including what became Chatham, Caswell, Alamance, Person, and parts of Guilford, Rockingham, Randolph, and Wake Counties. A detailed introduction by George Stevenson, supplemented by the editor's research, explains what the Granville Proprietary was and the records created by it's Land Office. In his abstracts of the deeds, Mr. Bennett has included the metes and bounds description, the neighboring land owners, the surveys and plats with the names of the chain bearers and facsimile copies of the signatures of the grantees and the witnesses. This volume provides the at-home researcher with all the information to be found from examination of the original documents. There are 428 of these grants, of which less than 50 appear in surviving Orange County Deed Books. Since this is the one place where the researcher is apt to find his ancestor's signature (many wills and deeds not having survived), it is particularly convenient for the researcher to have a reproduction of the signature with the survey, plat, and abstract of the deed. The author has also included a notation as to the Patent Book and Deed Book where the grant is recorded. The format of this particularly useful book is pleasing. because of its size and location, Orange County is a pivotal county in tracing North Carolina lineages.

Bennett, Pub. 1989, Reprinted 2019, 8 1/2" x 11", soft cover, 160 pages, Index, ISBN #0-89308-996-6. This book continues the publication of metes and bounds descriptions of the original so-called "Granville Grants" fro the Secretary of State Land Grant Office (hel by the NC State Archives) for the original Orange County area, including what later became Chatham, Durham, Caswell, Alamance, Person, and parts of Guilford, Rockingham, and Randolph Counties. Because Mr. Bennett has included the surveys and plats as well as the signatures of grantees and witnesses, the user has at hand all the information from the original. Mr. Bennett has also included, courtesy of the British PRO, the "Plan(that) sheweth part of the Southern Boundary of the Lands Granted the 17th day of September 1744 by his Majesty King George the Second to the Rt. Honble. John Lord Carteret, now Earl Granville, as the same was laid out and marked in the Months of March and April 1746 by Eleazer Allen, Matthew Rowan, William Forbes, and George Gould, Esqrs." One of the fascinating things about this map is that it clearly shows the southern Granville line to have been run as far west as Rocky River in 1746 when all the published histories say the line was not extended taht far west until 1766. Mr. Bennett has presented the deeds and surveys with his usual expertise, and the volume is a MUST for anyone working in the vast are of original Orange County.

Orange County was formed in 1752 from Granville, Johnston and Bladen counties. Orange County lay within the Granville Proprietary. After John Earl Granville died, the land office closed in March 1763. Between 1763 and 1777 it was not possible to gain title to vacant land because there was no one to grant it. When the state opened its land office in 1777, entry takers were selected in the various counties; persons who swore allegiance to the State were then entitled to land at 50 shillings per 100 acres, The entry taker recorded the amount of land, the nearest watercourses, natural boundaries, and adjoining property owners; if in three months no one made a claim for the land, the claimant took a copy of the entry and warrant to the surveyor who then laid off and surveyed the tract., providing two copies of the plat. Sworn chain carriers assisted the surveyors. The paperwork was then forwarded to the Secretary of State, and grants were issued twice a year: in April and October. The grantess had tweleve months to register the grant, or it became void. The authors have abstracted the grants to include: grant number, name of grantee, patent book citation, date of entry, date of issue, entry number, name of grantee, acerage with metes and bounds description, date of survey, name of surveyor and chain carriers, and a facsimile of the plat.

This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas MCAdory Owen, 1866-1920, was at one time Head of the Alabama State Dept. of Archives and History together with his wife Marie Bankhead Owen. In An explanatory note to these records Mr. Owen states that he visited Granville County in Dec. 1895 to examine the official records for a genealogy of the Owen and Grant families of Grassy Creek, also the Williams family. In the process, he conceived the idea of preparing a history of the county, and the county clerk placed at his disposal 10 of the old "Minute" and "Record" books prior to 1800. He noted that there were some gaps in the records, particularly from May 9, 1776 to Feb.. 4, 1777, when apparently no court was held, as the pagination was continuous in the Book. He abstracted just about everything, and he listed the documents he did not abstract. This includes wills and inventories, bastardy bonds. (lots of these), apprenticeship indentures, marriage and bonds etc. Some documents that he considered important he copied in full. His notes start in 1746 and most stopped after the Revolution, but he continued the marriage bonds to 1815. The records this book is taken from are as follows: Vol. I, county court minutes, 2 Dec. 1749-4 Dec. 1750 & Record Book 1750-1761; Ibid, Vol. II, 5 March 1750/1-21 Sept. 1759; Ibid, Vol. III, 1759-1767 lost; Ibid, Vol. IV, 3 August 1768-20 July 1770; Ibid, Vol. V, 5 May 1774-3 Feb. 1778; Ibid, Vol. VI, 7 August 1781-6 Aug. 1783; Vol. II, minute & record book 1760-1762; Vol. III, minute & record book 1762-1765; Vol. IV, record book 1765-1772, county court minutes 2 Feb. 1767-3 May 1779, county court minutes 19 July 1769-18 Aug. 1772; Vol. V, minute & record book 4 May 1774-1782; Vol. VI, minute & record book 1782-1785 and 6 Nov. 1781-5 May 1785; Selective Marriages License Bonds, Coroners Inquisitions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the amazing life history of an early surveyor in North Carolina. William Churton left London, to assist the newly formed Granville District Land Office - as a surveyor. Beginning in 1748, Churton will ultimately survey over 600,000 acres of land - before closing the Land Office in 1763; due to the death of Earl Granville. He was also founder of Hillsborough NC, surveyor and designer of Salisbury, and surveyed/extended the State Line with VA. A lot of western NC Moravian activity as well. This book precipitated the author to apply for a State Historical Marker - honoring Churton. It was approved by the State, May 2017. Marker to be erected in Hillsborough - late October or early November 2017.
