Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's children are joining and quitting youth sports in record numbers. If kids can't find the fun in an activity, they may try to find the way out. If an adult can't find the right tools, they may not know the right words to say or the right actions to take. In Raising Your Game, authors Ethan J. Skolnick and Dr. Andrea Corn present a guide adults can use to ensure the most enjoyable and enriching youth sports experience for a child. Through a combination of advice from more than 100 elite athletes and time-tested sports psychology concepts, Raising Your Game prompts parents to consider what really matters when it comes to their kids and sports. From LeBron James to Shannon Miller, Brandi Chastain to Jason Taylor, John Smoltz to Mary Joe Fernandez, Sanya Richards-Ross to Torii Hunter, athletes from across the sports spectrum discuss their setbacks and successes what worked for them and what didn't. Raising Your Game discusses the types of guidance that can ignite inspiration and foster participation, practice, and progress, and which methods can create frustration and dejection. It shows the difference a supportive parent can make by showing up, showing interest and, at times, showing restraint.

It closes with an evaluation and assessment of SDP programs. The second part examines the application of SDP by providing examples and insights into government involvement in SDP, not-for-profit organizations, and corporate and for-profit enterprises. Finally, the book concludes with a discussion of current trends and future implications of SDP. Written for current and future SDP managers, developers, and administrators, from the student to the professional, Sport for Development and Peace offers a comprehensive look at the many substantive and interconnected SDP topics in order to positively impact this fast-growing field.

Sales and Revenue Generation in Sport Business With HKPropel Access provides a comprehensive overview of the many ways in which sport organizations generate revenues, and it teaches students the practical concepts they will need for success. Going beyond theoretical concepts of sales and sales management, the authors present an applied approach to revenue generation in sport: the PRO method of sales (PROspect, PRObe, PROvide, PROpose, PROtect). Students will learn how this proven five-step process for generating revenue is applicable across all avenues in sport business, including ticket sales, broadcasting and media revenue, sponsorships, corporate giving and foundation revenue, fundraising and development, grant writing, concessions, merchandising, and social media. The text covers how this sales strategy can be applied across the broad industry of sport—from professional sport and intercollegiate and interscholastic athletics to amateur sport and organizations in recreational settings—equipping students for meaningful careers with longer-lasting success within any segment of the sport industry they enter. Throughout the text, themed sidebars provide examples of industry best practices and successful sales strategies. Case studies in each chapter, plus discussion questions, enhance the learning experience. Plus, related online learning activities delivered through HKPropel offer practical interactive scenarios that will better prepare students to enter the sport industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sports Crazy: How Sports Are Sabotaging American Schools exposes the excesses of middle and high school sports and the detrimental effects our sports obsession has on American education. Institutions are increasingly emulating college and professional sports models and losing sight of a host of educational and health goals. Steven J. Overman describes how this agenda is driven largely by partisan fans and parents of athletes who exert an inordinate influence on school priorities, and he explains how and why school administrators shockingly and consistently capitulate to these demands. The author underscores the incongruity of public schools involved in an entertainment business and the effects this diversion has on academic integrity, learning, life experience, and overall educational outcomes. Overman examines out-of-control school sports within the context of a school’s educational mission and curriculum, with telling reference to impacts on physical education. He explores as well the outsized place of interscholastic sports beyond the classroom and scrutinizes the distorted relationship between intramural or recreational sports and elitist, varsity athletics. Overman’s chapter on tackle football explains many reasons why this sport should be eliminated from the school extracurriculum and replaced by flag or touch football. Overman presents a brief history of interscholastic sports, and he compares and contrasts the American experience of school-sponsored sport to the European model of community-based clubs. Which approach better serves students? Overman recommends reforms in the context of a radical proposal to phase out interscholastic sports in favor of an intramural or club model. This approach would alleviate such problems as elitism and gender bias and reign in hypercompetitiveness while freeing schools to educate students rather than provide public entertainment.

Complete with goal-specific meal plans and nutrient-packed recipes to optimize body composition, ROAR contains personalized nutrition advice for all stages of training and recovery. Customizable meal plans and strengthening exercises come together in a comprehensive plan to build a rock-solid fitness foundation as you build lean muscle where you need it most, strengthen bone, and boost power and endurance.
