Book excerpt: Have you ever sat down with your coffee to enjoy a new book to discover it was too flowery or too hard a read for you? Well this is definitely not that book; this book is full of wee poems written in Scottish slang as the Scots tongue and poetry is close to my heart and would like everyone to enjoy some writings of my home land. I am sure you will easily understand without a translator, and very easy to read. The childrens poems mostly have little moral endings to teach simple lessons like being careful crossing the road, keeping your teeth clean and doing as you are asked. You will enjoy the exploits of many mischievous woodland beasts along with stories of gnomes and elves. Your children will slip off peacefully to sleep and dream their own magical fantasies. This book will make you laugh and cry but hopefully most of you will enjoy these easy to read poems. Robyns Gran

Book Synopsis Echoes of Enlightenment by : Suzanne M. Bessenger
Download or read book Echoes of Enlightenment written by Suzanne M. Bessenger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echoes of Enlightenment explores the issues of gender and sainthood raised by the recently discovered "liberation story" of the fourteenth-century Tibetan female Buddhist practitioner Sönam Peldren. Born in 1328, Sönam Peldren spent most of her adult life as a nomad in eastern Tibet until her death in 1372. She is believed to have been illiterate, lacking religious education, and unconnected to established religious institutions. For that reason, and because as a woman her claims of religious authority would have been constantly questioned, Sönam Peldren's success in legitimizing her claims of divine identity appear all the more remarkable. Today the site of her death is recognized as sacred by local residents. Suzanne Bessenger draws on the new-found biography of the saint to understand how the written record of the saint's life is shaped both by the hagiographical agendas of its multiple authors and by the dictates of the genres of Tibetan religious literature, including biography and poetry. She considers Sönam Peldren's enduring historical legacy as a fascinating piece of Tibetan history that reveals much about the social and textual machinations of saint production. Finally, she identifies Sönam Peldren as one of the earliest recorded instances of a historical Tibetan woman successfully using the uniquely Tibetan hermeneutic of deity emanation to achieve religious authority.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iragene Jones, a homesteader in central New Mexico, discovers a bloody, blond scalp on her property. Determined to find out who this woman was, Iragene sets off to question her neighbors, only to find that they, too, have experienced other bizarre events. Leaving behind her best friend, Cassie—the daughter of a former slave, her brother, and his very pregnant wife, Iragene sets off to solve these macabre events. She and her lover, Alejandro Gallegos, bring all the information and evidence they find to the recalcitrant sheriff, who belittles their concerns and carries on with business as usual. Realizing their community is on its own, Iragene and Alejandro continue their quest to discover who is committing these crimes, and in doing so uncover additional, more horrific crimes, some perhaps involving the sheriff himself. Things finally come to a head in Gran Quivera, in the middle of a frightening deluge of lightening, thunder, rain, and bullets.

Book Synopsis Urban Social Capital by : Gregory W. Streich
Download or read book Urban Social Capital written by Gregory W. Streich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a kaleidoscopic view of the norms and forms of contemporary city life, focusing especially on the processes of social capital (de)formation in the urban milieu. It brings together studies from highly diverse urban settings, such as squatter re-settlement projects in Kathmandu, urban funeral societies in Africa, an HIV/AIDS community in Los Angeles, the poor of Harare, pensioners in Shanghai, Maori gangs in Auckland, and a Roma boxing club in Prague, among others. Contributors draw on contemporary theory and research in social capital, political economy, urban planning and policy, social movements, civil society and democracy to explore how social norms, networks, connections and ties are created, deployed - and often frayed - under conditions of social complexity, inequality, cultural pluralism, and the ethno-racial diversity and division characteristic of urban contexts throughout the world. In this way, the volume engages in a genuinely globalized - and globalizing - discussion of contemporary urban social life and stands as a unique and timely interdisciplinary contribution to the ever-expanding literature devoted to social capital.
