Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Granny is a part of me and a part of many others who lived in the Deep South some 50 years ago or more. Her ancestors were of Scottish & English Descent. She is "overindulged" with superstitions and folktales. This book is a compilation of 'sayings' and tales I have heard over the years. Most of them actually came from my Mother and my Grandmother; and are now being retold through Granny. Many of these sayings are commonly known, but may vary with their phrases or even their meanings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cliche´, a trite expression or idea. "The Traveler´s Book of Inspirations" is the Author´s ingenuity and a compilation of personal and others´ metaphors, expressions of thought, values and beliefs. The idea to write the book came forth, from the Author´s extensive dialoging in conversation over various topics, during her life´s travel. She discovered that many of the same cliches were expressed in diverse places, from north to south and east to west. Cliches were also a means of communication in her family home, growing up. Each of these warm, subtle cliches being shared are to provide a wide arena for thought and problem solving, as a conversation piece or just as a relaxing read. Like traditional foods and attire, dialects, religious practices; folklores, old wives tales, superstitions and cultural celebrations are passed down through generations, the same applies to cliches. But, for whatever reason you are reading this book, the Author is humbly grateful, and wishes you Devine blessings of peace and harmony.

Book excerpt: The people who live in the Ozark country of Missouri and Arkansas were, until very recently, the most deliberately unprogressive people in the United States. Descended from pioneers who came West from the Southern Appalachians at the beginning of the nineteenth century, they made little contact with the outer world for more than a hundred years. They seem like foreigners to the average urban American, but nearly all of them come of British stock, and many families have lived in America since colonial days. Their material heirlooms are few, but like all isolated illiterates they have clung to the old songs and obsolete sayings and outworn customs of their ancestors. Sophisticated visitors sometimes regard the “hillbilly” as a simple child of nature, whose inmost thoughts and motivations may be read at a glance. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The hillman is secretive and sensitive beyond anything that the average city dweller can imagine, but he isn’t simple. His mind moves in a tremendously involved system of signs and omens and esoteric auguries. He has little interest in the mental procedure that the moderns call science, and his ways of arranging data and evaluating evidence are very different from those currently favored in the world beyond the hilltops. The Ozark hillfolk have often been described as the most superstitious people in America. It is true that some of them have retained certain ancient notions which have been discarded and forgotten in more progressive sections of the United States. It has been said that the Ozarker got his folklore from the Negro, but the fact is that Negroes were never numerous in the hill country, and there are many adults in the Ozarks today who have never even seen a Negro. Another view is that the hillman’s superstitions are largely of Indian origin, and there may be a measure of truth in this; the pioneers did mingle freely with the Indians, and some of our best Ozark families still boast of their Cherokee blood. My own feeling is that most of the hillman’s folk beliefs came with his ancestors from England or Scotland. I believe that a comparison of my material with that recorded by British antiquarians will substantiate this opinion.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE GOVERNOR GENERAL'S LITERARY AWARD FOR FICTION A GLOBE AND MAIL, CBC BOOKS, APPLE BOOKS, AND NOW TORONTO BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR In the tradition of The Poisonwood Bible and State of Wonder, a novel set in the rainforest of Ecuador about five women left behind when their missionary husbands are killed. Based on the shocking real-life events In 1956, a small group of evangelical Christian missionaries and their families journeyed to the rainforest in Ecuador intending to convert the Waorani, a people who had never had contact with the outside world. The plan was known as Operation Auca. After spending days dropping gifts from an aircraft, the five men in the party rashly entered the “intangible zone.” They were all killed, leaving their wives and children to fend for themselves. Five Wives is the fictionalized account of the real-life women who were left behind, and their struggles – with grief, with doubt, and with each other – as they continued to pursue their evangelical mission in the face of the explosion of fame that followed their husbands’ deaths. Five Wives is a riveting, often wrenching story of evangelism and its legacy, teeming with atmosphere and compelling characters and rich in emotional impact.
