Book excerpt: Truly a girl with freckles, being of Scottish and Irish descent, Sidney Mack has been writing her thoughts down in pencil for years. She touched, and was touched by, many lives and places as the daughter of a USMC aviator and continued her growth and high exposure while raising two sons, embarking upon motherhood at age nineteen. Amidst roles as a mother and wife, and then as a single mother, Sidney earned Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in North Carolina. Her career of teaching and performing spanned a period of twenty-five years. One major life trauma in 1972 compelled Sidney to record her experience in writing and on tape. More pencil scribbling emerged again in the 1980s until Sidney decided to compile her past and present recorded thoughts into a little book in hopes her reflections might benefit another who battles through this fascinating thing called life. A Freckled Girl is the result. Any reader may choose to freely develop one opinion or another while reading the text and can enjoy brief or not-so-brief writings at any given hour. A reader might just abandon the partially read book for a while until personal experience causes one to be drawn back to a freckled girl''s freckled happenings and a possible significance to one''s lifelong yearnings, hope for peace, moments of enlightenment, and desire for wisdom.

Book excerpt: Abandoned by her father and rejected by her mother, 4 year-old Jennie is taken without explanation from her kindergarten class and driven through the night to live with her grandparents. They live on a farm where gophers pop out of the ground, turkey gobblers give chase, the bathroom is in a little house near the woods, and which is austere and culturally limited. Almost from the beginning she tries to run away back to live with her mother in Minneapolis. But her grandparents, although undemonstrative, steadfastly support her. Grandpa helps her with her homework at night sitting around the kitchen table lit by a kerosene lamp, she sits on his lap, while riding the binder, and curls up with him on the sofa at nap time. She helps her Grandmother with the chickens, picking eggs and feeding the pigs. But conflicts arise. Especially with her aunt , Hilda who is spiteful and humiliating. Jennie wants to run away and find her father in Canada but all her attempts fail. As far back as in kindergarten, Jennie liked to draw. So in first grade when she was asked to draw the picture placed on the blackboard in front of the class, she worked hard to copy the exact likeness. The picture was The Last Supper. After that, she became known as the class artist. Hilda felt Jennie was wasting her time drawing and discouraged her. Reading, another of Jennie's interests, was also considered wasteful. All through high school Jennie continued to be the school artist. During this time she became attached to Frank, a future farmer with a kind, uncomplicated view of life. He loved her but knew her dream was to leave the farm and go to study art. After graduating from high school Jennie is offered a job in Washington, D. C. Her grandmother slips her thirty dollars and urges her to leave at once, before Aunt Hilda can interfere. Her new life in the city is a shock and a revelation. Jennie discovers art galleries, takes her first real art lesson using pastels, and begins to acquire a new set of goals and values. Two years later, she returns to Minneapolis and enrolls at the University of Minnesota in art. Life is a struggle as she has to work to support herself and pay for her education. While working at one of the her jobs, she meets Jim, a young psychology student who is using the G.I. Bill to attend university. Soon they marry, unknown to either Jennies' mother or her aunt Hilda. Jim is very supportive of Jennie's interest in art. Between leaving the farm and starting university a series of tragedies occurred. Her grandparents died—first her grandfather, then her grandmother. Earlier a favorite uncle shot himself. Another uncle died under questionable circumstances and her mother becomes committed to a mental hospital while her father remained a mystery in spite of efforts to locate him. After graduating from university, she paints and exhibits her work, exploring new directions of expression. It is not easy to find success. When galleries are either hanging her work upside down or failing to pay her, they disappear from sight. Her first real success comes from entering a painting in an exhibition in New York. Titled Subjective-Objective, the painting and received first prize. From then on Jennie's goal to become an accomplished artist plays an important part in her life. Still, she couldn't forget the farm where her uncle now lives. One day, she decided to go back to the place she'd grown up and had wanted to escape. Seeing the faded wallpaper on the upstairs hall the stippled paint walls, the empty bookcase, Jennie becomes aware she has slowly moved from the austere and culturally limited setting of the farm to a new world, one of painting, art, and intellectual interactions. She'd left the farm and could not return. Back in Toronto, Jennie walked into their condo, past th

Book excerpt: "A truly profound debut."—Buzzfeed "A time-bending suspense that's contemplative and fresh, evocative and gripping."—USA Today "Henry's story captivates, both as a romance and as an imaginative rethinking of time and space."—Publishers Weekly "This time-traveling, magical, and beautifully written love story definitely deserves a spot on your bookshelf."—Bustle Emily Henry's stunning debut novel is Friday Night Lights meets The Time Traveler's Wife and perfectly captures those bittersweet months after high school, when we dream not only of the future, but of all the roads and paths we've left untaken. Natalie's last summer in her small Kentucky hometown is off to a magical start . . . until she starts seeing the "wrong things." They're just momentary glimpses at first—her front door is red instead of its usual green, there’s a preschool where the garden store should be. But then her whole town disappears for hours, fading away into rolling hills and grazing buffalo, and Nat knows something isn't right. Then there are the visits from the kind but mysterious apparition she calls "Grandmother," who tells her, "You have three months to save him." The next night, under the stadium lights of the high school football field, she meets a beautiful boy named Beau, and it's as if time just stops and nothing exists. Nothing, except Natalie and Beau.

In a world of five-step lists and silver-bullet solutions to become perfect parents, mothers are burdened with mixed messages about who they are and what choices they should make. If you feel pulled between high-fives and hard words, with culture’s solutions only raising more questions, you’re not alone. But there is hope. Emily Jensen and Laura Wifler help you understand and apply the gospel to common issues moms face so you can connect your Sunday morning faith to the Monday morning tantrum. Discover how closely the gospel connects with today’s motherhood. Join Emily and Laura as they walk through the redemptive story and reveal how the gospel applies to your everyday life, bringing hope, freedom, and joy in every area of motherhood.

Book excerpt: Daniel MacKenzie aka Danny Mac, a handsome former Marine and CIA operative, turned to Jesus for healing from his painful past. As he settles into his life as a minister, Kenann James blows into his apartment and his life. Kenann is a petite, curly haired dynamo who moved into the apartment across the hall and hearing his cries from his frequent bad dreams, runs to his aid and tripping on the foyer rug blasts into his room like a cannonball. And if the normal course of events doesn’t awaken their love, getting kidnapped together by Danny Mac’s former lover seals it. Katerina Troika, a strikingly beautiful woman, has infiltrated an ancient secret society and needs Danny Mac’s former skills as an assassin to eliminate the competition. She kidnaps Kenann to ensure his cooperation. When they arrive in Alexandria, Egypt, things soon go awry. The leader of the society takes one look at Kenann and believes her to be the reincarnated goddess Inanna, the Sumerian deity that was the forerunner of Ishtar and Isis. His desire to possess her sets them on a collision course for disaster. Back home in Memphis, the amateur rescue contingency is already on the move. Mrs. Gage has taken charge. She is a wealthy widow with more money than Croesus and a penchant for intrigue who soon marshals the resources of Judy, Kenann’s gorgeous friend, and Jake, the former Marine commander turned church elder. It was through Jake that Danny Mac met the carpenter from Galilee. Danny Mac’s contacts in the CIA sprang into action as soon as the kidnapping occurred. The leader was Danny Mac’s old friend, Andrew O’Hanlon, who quickly fell for Kenann’s friend, Judy. Blade - the young bi-racial boy Danny Mac had befriended in the neighborhood, overheard the rescue plans and stowed away on the private plane Mrs. Gage had employed to take them to Egypt. He was only allowed to stay because she knew a dark- skinned boy could come in handy in their efforts to blend in and gain intel. The final member of their Merry Band of Misfits is Kenann’s beloved Granny, Moira James. When she showed up unannounced on Kenann’s doorstep, Mrs. Gage’s only response was of course you will go to her rescue. And so, the band was formed. Bonds would be forged stronger than family and become a force that would do battle from the ancient secret society to the halls of the Pentagon. The story culminates in a magnificent underground complex in the desert of Egypt. It is an ancient but well-hidden community complete with a massive pyramid to rival Giza and will seal the fate of Kenann, reincarnated goddess, Inanna. This story has it all. It blends some often-intense romance with grand adventure. It shows how faith and trust in God can change lives. It shows evil at its core and the ways good can overcome through the power of Jesus Christ. It has hints of secret and mysterious elements that will intrigue the reader. But in the end, it is about relationships, friendships and the power of love.

As a child, Madden lived a life of extravagance, from her exclusive private school to her equestrian trophies and designer shoe-brand name. But under the surface was a wild instability. The only child of parents continually battling drug and alcohol addictions, Madden confronted her environment alone. Facing a culture of assault and objectification, she found lifelines in the desperately loving friendships of fatherless girls. With unflinching honesty and lyrical prose, spanning from 1960s Hawai'i to the present-day struggle of a young woman mourning the loss of a father while unearthing truths that reframe her reality, Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls is equal parts eulogy and love letter. It's a story about trauma and forgiveness, about families of blood and affinity, both lost and found, unmade and rebuilt, crooked and beautiful.
