Download or read book Little Kings written by Peter Kahn and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Kahn's debut collection Little Kings is an astonishing book of astute and deeply humane poetry, one which seeks to find in both teaching and learning a common ground, and between longing and belonging an equilibrium. Intuitive and wise, Kahn's poems remain compelling even when exploring those places where there is "no vocabulary for what might happen". Little Kings encompasses stories of the Jewish diaspora and of American life, interweaving narratives of escape and refuge, of yearning and absence. Some of these poems ricochet with the magnitude of loss and violence, with lives interrupted, half-lived, or vanished. Anchoring these poems is their immense grace and lyricism, and Kahn's great skill in tenderly carrying memory and experience into our shared understanding.

Not so for Sam Ashby, a hormonally charged country boy, busy navigating a turbulent adolescence. Frustrated by his lack of success, especially with girls, nineteen-year-old Sam accepts the job of Assistant Stage Manager and general dogsbody at the Meads Theatre in Eastbourne, where his world's about to change, in ways he could never have imagined.Enter stage left Abigail Compton, imperishable star of stage and screen - to dazzle, to embarrass and divest poor Sam of his every last defence (including his best shrink-to-fit Levi Strauss blue jeans) on his way across the shaky bridge to adulthood. The final playful episode in Richard Masefield's quintet of Sussex novels and a sequel to his bestselling Chalkhill Blue, Three Seasons of Sadie is a genuinely funny rite of passage story set in the provincial theatre of the nineteen-sixties.

Book Synopsis Grandpa's Adventures by : Veda Taylor Strong
Download or read book Grandpa's Adventures written by Veda Taylor Strong and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005-04-04 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel is based on fact. Though it is based on fact, this novel uses fictional events, places and characters. Parts of the novel are humorous, while other parts are exciting and interesting. I am attempting to follow the lives of my father’s parents, John and Elizabeth Taylor, from the time of the Civil War, their marriage, their lives and adventures in different states, their travels across the country by wagon train and their lives in Tacoma, Washington. My dear aunt told me stories many years ago. Some I remember and some I remember only parts of. She was a very young girl at the time and experienced many of these things. I learned many things by asking questions. When relatives and people learned that I was interested in writing a book of this nature, they came forward with letters and stories of their own that I was able to use. Grandpa John was a tailor and made his living this way. Later in years he became fascinated with the railroads and became an engineer. I found this book to be fascinating to write and wishing that I could have been there and lived in such times before the machine revolution changed the world.

Every Grandpa is as unique as a fingerprint, and each relationship with his grandkids usually molds itself into a customized experience of mutual advice, wisdom, and suggestions. Sometimes you just get crazy with each other. The Grandpa’s Manual is not a how-to book. It is a collection of stories encouraging men to become whatever kind of Grandpa they desire to be. It is written so the reader can pause, put it down, and say, “Hmm, I never thought of that!” Building a relationship with your grandkids is important business. So when grandkids look to Grandpa for advice and wisdom, they can see that Grandpas have grandkid challenges in the relationship too. Take for instance when your grandkid suffers a breakup with his first true love and concludes he cannot share his broken heart with Mom, Dad, or his little sister. Mom is a girl. Dad sometimes does not take it really seriously. And little sister may know his true love, and nothing will ever be sacred again. Who may be the one who will listen, not judge, and help soothe that broken spirit? It may be Grandpa. Grandpa has probably been in the same situation and knows how to stitch up the wound. Grandpa, have you ever raced your grandkid in a go-kart? Or have you run a zip line lately? What would you say if your grandkid asked you what it would be like to die? Do dogs go to heaven? What is prayer, and who is God? Have you ever tried to bake bread with your grandkid when neither one of you knows how to bake bread? How do you handle life when Grandma dies? Where is the boundary line with Mom and Dad when it comes to giving opinions and advice? The Grandpa’s Manual walks with you as you seek answers to these and many other questions. It is an exciting book that will move you in the direction of establishing the greatest role on earth—being a Grandpa.

Download or read book Grandpas Stories written by Rick Steber and published by Bonanza Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-18 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great-grandfather has witnessed so much change in his life. When he was a boy the horse and buggy was the mode of transportation. He has lived to see aviation progress from a few barnstorming pilots hop-scotching across the country to jet aircraft thundering across the sky. And he was sitting there that day, in front of the television, when men walked on the moon. All the years and hard work have taken their toll but when he is seated in his favorite rocking chair, great-grandchildren scattered at his feet, his eyes sparkle as lively as they must have in his youth. He exuberantly recounts the past, painting vivid pictures of his life on the western frontier as a pioneer, miner, freighter, stage driver, Indian fighter, trapper, homesteader, logger, buckaroo .... The story over, he waits, and then a small voice implores, 'Grandpa, tell us another story, please.' Grandpa grins, 'Well, all right. Once a long, looong, looooong time ago....'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Safran Foer emerged as one of the most original writers of his generation with his best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated. Now, with humor, tenderness, and awe, he confronts the traumas of our recent history. What he discovers is solace in that most human quality, imagination. Meet Oskar Schell, an inventor, Francophile, tambourine player, Shakespearean actor, jeweler, pacifist, correspondent with Stephen Hawking and Ringo Starr. He is nine years old. And he is on an urgent, secret search through the five boroughs of New York. His mission is to find the lock that fits a mysterious key belonging to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11. An inspired innocent, Oskar is alternately endearing, exasperating, and hilarious as he careens from Central Park to Coney Island to Harlem on his search. Along the way he is always dreaming up inventions to keep those he loves safe from harm. What about a birdseed shirt to let you fly away? What if you could actually hear everyone's heartbeat? His goal is hopeful, but the past speaks a loud warning in stories of those who've lost loved ones before. As Oskar roams New York, he encounters a motley assortment of humanity who are all survivors in their own way. He befriends a 103-year-old war reporter, a tour guide who never leaves the Empire State Building, and lovers enraptured or scorned. Ultimately, Oskar ends his journey where it began, at his father's grave. But now he is accompanied by the silent stranger who has been renting the spare room of his grandmother's apartment. They are there to dig up his father's empty coffin.
