Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tragicomic life story of one of America's best-known country entertainers, told with warmth and honesty This book recounts the fascinating life of Roni Stoneman, the youngest daughter of the pioneering country music family, and a girl who, in spite of poverty and abusive husbands, eventually became "The First Lady of Banjo," a fixture on the Nashville scene, and, as Hee Haw's Ironing Board Lady, a comedienne beloved by millions of Americans nationwide. Drawn from over seventy-five hours of recorded interviews, Pressing On reveals that Roni is also a master storyteller. In her own words and with characteristic spunk and candor, she describes her "pooristic" ("way beyond 'poverty-stricken'") Appalachian childhood, and how she learned from her brother Scott to play the challenging and innovative three-finger banjo picking style developed by Earl Scruggs. She also warmly recounts Hee Haw-era adventures with Minnie Pearl, Roy Clark, and Buck Owens; her encounters as a musician with country greats including Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, June Carter, and Patsy Cline; as well as her personal struggles with shiftless and violent husbands, her relationships with her children, and her musical life after Hee Haw. A volume in the series Music in American Life

Book excerpt: This is the first of a series, and will take several books to complete the story. This story takes place in 1947, in Roswell, New Mexico. An older man, a cowboy was caught by surprise, while out on the range. From out of nowhere, flying black rods, about ten inches long, quietly flew up and drilled a flesh sample out of the back of his hand. His trusted pony received the same treatment. When they tried to flee from them, they found out that the black rods were too swift for them. Soon the black rods caught up with them and injected some form of alien tranquilizer into both of them. In a matter of moments, they were rendered unconscious. The cowboy was teleported on to the master alien ship, which appeared to be two miles long and twenty or so stories high. These aliens are ruthless and are indifferent to humans, Later, in the novel, the aliens also abduct the cowboy's ex-wife, the cowboy and wife both being fairly simple-minded plain folks. The chief master alien was found to be extremely intellectual; he can speak over 3,000 languages and has studied Earth since before the antediluvian area. He meets his match with an old plain-spoken grandma and a flea-bitten old cowboy. This novel has a witty twist of comedy which adds a little spice to humanity. The two older couples were simple folk, but honest Injuns, so to speak, and the aliens realized this. Of course, the aliens had the upper hand at all times. The aliens claimed that they weren't interested in conquering Earth, it's far too primitive! Besides that, if they wanted to, they could have conquered Earth many years ago. The aliens think that they have run onto an amazing secret, which at all cost, they wish to retrieve. It might take some time, but they always get what they go after. The older couple had domestic problems most of their married lives. The ex-wife, granted, in the past had resorted to witchcraft to try and save her marriage, but it only ended in a disaster. Along with this alien problem, both of their lives are in turmoil, mostly because their lives were based on lies and deceit. The aliens monitored their household constantly, then put an implant into both of them. The aliens revealed some secrets that mankind has asked for many years -- secrets of the universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Father's Choice is a horse story about a young girl, Anna, whose father has made the choice to leave the family. Due to financial difficulties, the family loses their home and has been forced to live with relatives, making Anna's life difficult. Recently, they have come to stay at Anna's grandparent's home, where she discovers a horse. Immediately falling in love with the horse, Anna learns to continue her love for the people that she is angry with, like her father. Unfortunately, Anna is unable to raise enough money to purchase the horse, so when she moves away from her grandmother's, she won't be able to see the horse again. This is the first entry into the Horses from Heaven series, a new series in kid's fiction. It is a brilliant short story about girls and horses for kids, as it is an entertaining and enlightening read, especially for any child that is struggling to overcome an anger issue. Short stories for kids in recent years have been created for a quick profit rather than to entertain and teach their readers. Often, these books treat children like fools, and assume they are incapable of handling deeper plots or anything less than a completely happy and innocent story. Luckily, this book is a one of the few short stories for children that attempts to both entertain, and instruct its readers in a deep manner.

Book excerpt: As a 115 lb. teenager drafted into the United States Army during the Korean conflict, Donald Huard was laughed at, taunted and bullied by other recruits. He met his military responsibilities effectively, however, facing the potential for a military court martial during one tour of duty before his honorable discharge in 1954. His is an interesting soldier's story. Determined to get a college education, Don used his G I Bill to get his associate's and bachelor's degrees. Then, with the firm support of his wife and four children over a very long period of seventeen years he managed to meet the requirements for his master's and Ph.D. degrees in psychology with minors in criminology and business. His is a very successful story of constructive determination. How does one recover at the age of 50 as the loving father of four teenagers grieving the loss of their mother? How does he rebuild his own life following such sadness? Eventually, Don met and married Margie, the wonderful lady who enabled him to live again. Theirs is an interesting story of true love. In his early eighties now, Dr. Huard tells his story in this, his own personal autobiography, written slowly over the last 25 years.

Book excerpt: A visit to Leo's grandfather's farm turns upside down when his grandmother's bee hives are stolen. A light-hearted and funny middle-grade novel for fans of Rebecca Stead and Lynda Mullaly Hunt. Eleven-year-old Leo is an "armchair adventurer." This, according to Dad, means he'd choose adventures in books or video games over real-life experiences. And while Leo hates the label, he can’t argue with it. Unlike his little sister Lizzie, Leo is not a risk-taker. So when he, Lizzie, Mom and Dad leave the city to visit Grandpa on Heron Island, Leo finds all kinds of dangers to avoid — from the deep, dark ocean to an old barn on the verge of collapse. But nothing on the island is more fearsome than Grandpa himself — Leo has never met anyone so grumpy! According to Mom, Grandpa is still grieving the recent death of his wife, a beekeeper beloved by everyone on the island. Despite Leo's best efforts to avoid it, adventure finds him anyway when Grandma’s beehives go missing in the dead of night. Infuriated, Grandpa vows to track down the sticky-fingered thieves himself . . . with risk-averse Leo and danger-loving Lizzie (plus a kitten named Mayhem) in tow.
